A thread about Kirke

First round of Drive, Chip, and Putt is this Thursday. I'm bummed I won't be able to be there with him; we ended up scheduling our church's VBS this week. But that means my parents get to go with him, and that's a good thing. I'm hoping my dad takes some good video.

Took Kirke to the course this afternoon for a practice session for chipping and putting.

I'll keep everyone posted on his results.

Filling that cup up, love it.

It's also incredible how much he's grown in 8 months.  But I'm sure I don't need to tell you and mom that...ha

My wife packed up Kirke's backpack before he left, so here's his scripting for tomorrow:

IMG_20190730_195456.jpeg

(Yes, I'm joking about scripting. He is wearing this, but we are not taking this nearly that seriously.)

Also, the fresh sleeve of ProV's was given to him by the manager of our local course, who has been so gracious to Kirke. He's a great guy. Kirke's using those tomorrow for the chipping and putting.

Let's go Kirke!!! I am pretty sure with the forum behind him, he pretty much has the Tiger Woods gallery equivalent of kids drive chip and putt.

Kirke is home!

And I have a correction to the above post, now that I'm seeing all the pictures and video. I misread a text from my mom. Kirke's overall score was a 58; I thought she said that was his putting score. So he didn't get an 80 overall; it was a 58 overall.

The rest of the story is correct: still tied for third and then eliminated on tie breaks.

Video and pictures probably posting tomorrow.

Christopher is only 4 (turns 5 in October), but he's already (gulp!) 56lbs. To put that in perspective, that's the median weight for 8 year old boys. He outweighs Kirke by over 10 pounds already. The last time we brought him in for a checkup, the doc projected him out to 6'4". I'm 5'10".

In other news, I'm starting a GoFundMe for his teenage food bills.

Just catching up with this amazing thread! I completely relate to this post. My son Link who won't even be 2 until October currently weighs over half as much as his 7 year old sister and is as tall or taller than most 3 year olds.

Also, that's pretty incredible how well he did. Bummer he just missed advancing to the next round.

So on the whole, he did very well. He's a 6-year-old competing in the 7–9 bracket, so he has two more years to grow and compete here. It was his first taste of formal competition in golf. My dad said he kept a good attitude, which is what I care about most.

Right now, I'm looking forward to my parents and Kirke getting back, so I can give my son a big hug and tell him how proud I am of him.

Bolded are the most important parts, and I'm so glad that's your #1 focus. It's great to have kids understand competition from an early age, but it's even better for them to understand what it's like to be a good teammate and have fun.

Way to go @Kirke, you did great.  I wonder why they chose to use the putting score as the tie-breaker?  Too bad they didn't use the Driver score.  And that one kid that got a 99, he must be closer to the 9 year old limit, but either way that's pretty good.

One other note:  I love how Kirke holsters his SW after he chips it...just like the pros.

Official results have now been published on the DCP website. There doesn't seem to be a way to link there directly, but if you go to the results page, find the local qualifier at Eau Claire Golf and Country Club in Wisconsin, and check the boys 7-9 division, you'll find this:

The key here is that Kirke is first alternate. I'm not expecting anything of it, but if for some reason one of the top 3 aren't going to SentryWorld for the next round, Kirke could get a call by this upcoming Thursday.

I just love watching kids learning and playing golf. In the vids above I especially like Kirke's chipping and putting. Kirke's chipping both pre-chip and finish looked like a little tiny man with years of experience. His putting I enjoyed - he spots his ball, takes a stance and away it goes. No wasted moves with that young man.

Congratulations to you Kirke... and Dad!

  • GolfSpy MPR changed the title to A thread about Kirke

Took a quick video of Kirke hitting balls in the garage before we left for church this morning:

Kirke and my dad and I got to play 18 yesterday morning. I was playing well (for me), and at the turn, Kirke and I were tied at 39.

I shot 6 over on the back. He shot even par, and beat me by six. Just when I think I have a chance....

His highlight hole yesterday was 17. It's a short (100 yards), downhill par 4. He pulled 3w and feathered in a shot to 5 feet, and then rolled in the eagle putt.

@GolfSpy MPR  I have a confession.  I took my girlfriend to play golf Thursday. Our practice putting green is right beside the entrance to the clubhouse.  As I was walking up to the clubhouse to sign in, there was a little guy on the green wearing the same blue/orange titleist hat that Kirke had on in an earlier photo you posted and I presume who was his dad with him.  I had to do a double take because I thought you both were at my club all the way in SC.  Then I remembered that the little town I am in isn't exactly a tourist destination, nor a known golf paradise.  All of this to say, Kirke is already a forum celebrity and legend.

A couple shots from a twilight round with Kirke tonight:

It did run off the back, but that swing is a thing of beauty.

And then:

All told, an unspectacular round for Kirke: a 5-over 41. But I had fun on a nice cool evening, and had both boys with me.

It was the first time Christopher has walked nine. At age 4, he reached the uphill 200 yard par 5 in three shots, something Kirke wasn't able to do until this year. There's some serious power in that boy.

This kid's wear patterns are way better than mine:

Looking forward to taking a little trip with Kirke next week. I'm speaking at a men's retreat in lower Michigan. It kicks off with a scramble, and Kirke is coming to participate (there's the possibility I was invited as speaker just because the pastor wanted to play with Kirke). I'm also planning on a couple of rounds with Kirke on the drive down and back again.

This is a great use of squishy apples and a great use of slow motion:

And here's Christopher's (4) swing. You can see he has a strong move through the apple. Just like on the course, he tends to have a heavily downward angle of attack:

  • 2 weeks later...

I must have put my last post in this thread at the wrong time. No one liked videos of smashing apples with drivers? 🙂

Anyway, Kirke and I had a fun weekend last week. We drove down to the Lower Peninsula of Michigan so that I could speak at a men's retreat from the church I grew up in. The retreat began on Friday with a scramble. On a couple of holes, they put out coolers with candy bars. Anyone whose shot finished on the green was entitled to a candy bar. So of course, Kirke picked up two free candy bars:

And then on another short par 3 (from the red tees), Kirke beat every man in the field to win a closest to the pin:

This shot is about 95 yards. You can see him hold off a bit on the finish, because he's trying to get his driver to land softly. The ball finished two feet from the cup, and he tapped in for a birdie for our team.

On Sunday between services, we went to a Golf Galaxy (we love hitting golf stores when we actually have the chance to do so). Kirke loved that they had clubs out for demo, even though they were adult clubs:

Last note in this post: Facebook reminded me this morning that on this date four years ago, Kirke played his first ever nine-hole round.

Ok I missed the apples video before. But honestly that looks fun. If I were his age I promise I'd be doing that. Probably all afternoon! 🏌️‍♂️

As if I needed more evidence that Kirke's hand-eye coordination is better than mine has ever been, here's his attempt at a Happy Gilmore from our round today:

On a more serious golf level: we played 9 holes, and he parred all nine, taking 15 putts. And nice clean round.

And here's another indication of Kirke's natural ability:

Now it's important to clarify: Kirke has a level of ambidexterity. He eats and writes left handed. He plays golf and throws right handed. In soccer, he clearly prefers his left foot.

But still, his lefty swing is cleaner than my right handed swing.
