A thread about Kirke

Recommended Posts

It's been a while since I posted anything here about Kirke. Michigan's courses are all currently closed, which creates some mixed feelings here. It's an obvious bummer, but we're still awaiting the melting of all the snow (with more snow predicted at the end of the week), so our course wouldn't be open anyway.

Kirke's been putting inside, doing a bit of SkyTrak, and (when the weather's decent) chipping balls around the yard. Michelle Holmes (a great junior golf coach worth a follow on Twitter) has been putting up some good indoor putting challenges that I've given to Kirke:

Indoor practice isn't without its hazards. A couple days ago, Kirke was chipping in the basement; we have an old dog bed mounted to the wall, which deadens the impact. Kirke missed the dog bed:

We need to get outside.

This is great keep it going! My son is always asking to swing. He putts on my mat every....single......night. Not complaining it awesome.

has he had a chance to do any camps? Not sure age but just signed my son up for the Nike camp that is local this summer for 5 days should be good for him can’t wait to see how he does.

if you have had him in camp what did you think?

So far, we've really not had the opportunity. Kirke's 7 right now, and he's not had a lesson or gone to any camps; just given where we live, there aren't options like that. We're hoping that (depending on how the pandemic and response continue) he'll be able to play his first competitive round this upcoming summer.

My son is the same age (same started swinging a club as soon as he could stand up lol). I am not the best instructor but he loves the game. We got on a par 3 course last for for the first tome he loved it.

good luck look forward to watching how Kirke’s skills continue to improve!

We really need the golf courses to open, because we've been reduced to doing overdone golf Twitter comedy now 🙂

More seriously, though: how good is this swing?!

This might be my new favorite video of Kirke, just because it's nuts. He's at the church with me this afternoon, and he's trying to tie my distance record for a perfect putt (just north of 40'). He doesn't get the perfect, but of the 13 balls he putts, he does this:

1: hits hole
2: hits hole
3: OK
4: hits hole
5: hits hole
6: hits hole
7: burns edge
8: burns other edge
9: meh
10: meh
11: OK
12: hits hole
13: hits hole

Technically, a ball has to roll up and down the PuttOut to count as a make, but at least a couple that hit the hole were out of steam and would have dropped in the cup.

It's a perk of being a pastor of a church during a shutdown: having the building all to ourselves.

The only challenge is that we don't keep it heated with no one there, so it's only 55° in the auditorium. 🙂

at this point I’m going to be very mad if I miss a 4 footer this year... but I don’t think I’ve practiced any 40 footers! 😂

A proud dad moment here. Over a month ago, I posted this swing of Kirke's on Twitter:

I tagged Duval and Sorenstam (interesting that they've each shot a 59, isn't it?) because Kirke often has the same head move they had, looking down the line before impact.

This past week, I got a new follower who must have opened my profile and commented on Kirke's swing here. This morning, I had this notification in Twitter:

When the GOAT of female golfers likes a compliment of your son's swing, that's a pretty cool feeling.

How old was He when you first got him out on the course? My oldest is 5, but I think it will be some trips to the range for him only this year.

How did you approach teaching him the rules? I’ve already tried explaining that swinging fast is good, but when you get close you might nit need to hit it as far you can. The objective is to get it in the hole in as few strokes as possible.

Right now he likes hitting the foam balls I have around the yard.

Kirke started playing nine hole rounds with me (carting) when he was 3. That's something I have no advice for you: I get absolutely zero credit that Kirke had the attention span at 3 to play nine holes of golf. That kind of extended focus is something that is innate with him, and he has it for all sorts of tasks (reading, crafts, etc.).

As for the rules: I suppose I just taught as they came up. Obviously, to begin, he would get to improve his lies on occasion or take free drops from ill-placed ditches. We have really stressed golf etiquette; learning to be happy when other people hit good shots was a huge hurdle for him, because he's psychotically competitive (at 4, he'd literally cry and get angry if I hit a good shot; the kid is not normal).

As for learning to gauge distances: again, this isn't any deep insight, but Kirke just played. He spends hours chipping balls around our yard to targets. I've just started giving him yardages on the course, but I'm discouraging him (at least for now) from any kind of "55 yards is a 3/4 8-iron" mindset; for now, I just want him to see the target and feel the swing. We can make it technical later, if needed, but not now.

The vast majority of any coaching I give him is results-based: "Kirke, see if you can make your ball do X," rather than, "Kirke, try doing X with your lead wrist." Every so often, I suggest something of the latter, but I keep it to the language of experimenting: "Kirke, see what happens if you move your ball position back in your stance."

I tend to agree with coaches that say, whatever you do, keep it fun. That's going to mean different things for different kids. Kirke wants to spend all day at our course, using the practice green and the 9th and 18th greens, hitting all kinds of wedge shots. He'd literally do that for hours. For him, that's fun. For other kids, that's torture. Since it's nearly impossible to become a professional golfer for a living, our goal is to (first, obviously) build our relationship, develop a love for a game he can play his whole life, and then to increase his skill. I wouldn't want to imperil the first two goals chasing the third.

Bonus: here's a nice shot from Kirke messing around with a wedge following our round this morning:

Absolutely incredible. Right now my son is 7 and again I do the same keep it fun. He is struggling with happy feet on swings especially his front foot where he will step on swing (baseball). I just let him do his thing its really just letting them figure it out in their own way! keep it up! Wish I could drain chips like that!

Yeah, Kirke is deeply attached to his big lead heel lift on his backswing and his ten-finger grip. More power to him (literally and metaphorically):

It’s all good! I used that ten finger baseball grip up until about 5 years ago.

That's an awesome swing for anybody let alone a young kid! Way to go guys! My son just turned 8 and I am in the process of teaching him golf, I hope I can do as well as you have so far.

That’s awesome! Sounds like you’ve got a partner in crime for many rounds to come!

My son is about 5 and a half and loves hitting around the yard, and putting on the practice green. But until he’s on the green he in full swing mode. We’ve started trying to play games like hitting it to the light post or something to get him in the thought of controlling his shots while keeping it fun.

Thanks for the tips on how to coach while keeping it fun and sort of self-discovery mode. The range is open again so we will be heading there soon. They have a trampoline thats fun to try and hit that he gets a kick out of.

Both my daughters like the game. One is significantly more competitive than the other.  The younger one likes the ducks. Gotta go to a course without a pond 😉. She is always looking for rabbits, turtles, ducks, bugs.  I try and keep it fun for her.  I have to take them one at a time or we all get too distracted.

When Kirke plays, he wants to golf. My younger son Christopher wants to ride in the golf carts.

Frankly, I love playing and having my wife walk the course with me, but she (like your younger daughter) views it more of a nature hike, looking for animals, etc.

I’ve started letting them have fun around the house with the clubs and foam balls.  No real balls in our backyard.  Oh boy. Then at least they are swinging The clubs and having fun. And learning what they can and can’t do with a club and ball. They like and got to meet trick shot artist Tania Tarre and are trying “tricks”

Kirke and I walked a quick nine this morning. Here's one of his tee shots:

He smashed this drive on a 175 yard par 4, tossed a PW on, and walked off with his par.
