Too many GOLFRIENDS!

richsgbox

Recommended Posts

Golfriends is my wifes term for my other side pieces.

I hung out with my brother last night. We went out for some food and beer and talked about our next course to play next weekend and we couldnt agree on a place to play because we had either recently played the course or had prior engagements to play that course with others.

Basically this conversation led us both to the realization that with coworkers, family, friends, even kids, we had way too many golfriends and no enough time.

Good problem to have but a though balance.

I've posted about this in other threads, but I have about a handful of "golfriends" that I can call up to see if they want to play and here is pretty much the litany of excuses I'll get.

"I've got [something else] going on."

"I can't play that late in the day."

"I won't play first thing in the morning, because I like my sleep."

"I've already got a game at my club with my regular weekly group."

"There's a football game on so I'm staying home to watch that."

"I'm cooking a brisket, which takes about 12 hours."

"I'm out of town for the next month or so, so I won't be able to play until January."

"It's too hot."

"It's too cold."

"It's too wet."

"It's too dry."

"I don't want to drive that far."

All those excuses aside, if I call them up and say, "I've got a coupon for free golf and I'd like you to play on [such and such] a date, I'll get three guys in five minutes to say, "I'm in."

I'm actually contemplating not playing much anymore because of all of the above.  Solo golf is fine, but it gets old real quick.  I just haven't found anyone here in town that is as serious about the game as I am, or can play when I can play, which is after work during the week, and anytime on Saturday.  Factor in that it's been so wet around here lately that the golf courses are beyond saturated, and the rivers are all at flood stage.  Not even sure it would be much fun playing right now.  Also factor in that I threw my back out at the last tournament I played, which was essentially the last time I played, and I'm really not feeling it right now to go tee it up anywhere or anytime soon.

Injury aside... sounds like you need to step back for a while. I'm a guy that can and will play most anytime and on a short notice even. But I also find that a lot of people aren't like me and they have a lot of interests other than golf. So be it. However, if I don't have a planned game I can just show up at the club and find a few people to play with most anytime. My advice (for what it's worth) is don't let your "golf friends" drive your enjoyment (if there is any) of the game. 🙂

Excuses are exactly why ive made so many golfriends. Definitely more of a good thing than bad. In my early days of playing, ive asked guys to hop on if they had room in their group. Not the ideal way to make friends but it works. There's camaraderie in golf. Dont let the excuses stop you. As for the back...well ive had some back issues and im 34. Since, ive kept my swings smooth and adjusted by clubbing up.

Waaaay too many beer friends. At least with that we could have way more than a group of 4. Beer friends are endless.

Like I’ve said in other threads, my town is very rural. Like 2100 in “town” and 11,000 total population in the whole county. 1 course within 15-20 miles, if you golf I know you, and you know me. I have tons of golf friends that I can call anytime and I can get a 4 some in 30 minutes. If not I’ll join a 4 some and play with them.

Made a new golf friend today - 00sportsman! Great guy and there are lots of courses to play between here and where he’s at. We will have to work our way through them.

Not bad for kids from Maine and Connecticut.
