I've Got A Stinking Suspicion

A few days ago I was playing with some guys. Somewhere around the close of the front side I mentioned to a good friend that John* sure seems to have added new-found distance with his driver. My buddy immediately agreed and said he'd thought the same thing. I've played with John* many times and know his distances. But this day he was by me probably 30-40 yards on average. He was even past our longest player (my buddy) by at least 20-25 yards. We both witnessed this all day long. But nobody brought it up. I suspect he had his driver shaved. I watched and thought about it during the back nine. I wanted to take a look at his driver but refrained. Of course, I wasn't going to accuse him. I just wanted to compliment his distance and take a look at the driver he was using as if I were interested in one myself. BTW it was a Ping G400 and he's been playing it all summer. I've read the claims made by Worlds Hottest Drivers - gain 30-40 yards! Well, John* was getting it somehow. Next time he joins us I'm going to watch closely and at some point I'm going to take a look at the face and see what I can see. Or... not see. There's something going on.

He's a longer driver than 230 anyway. For example... if I were to catch one dead in the screws I might crack one 255? I had one or two of those the other day. But John was past me 30 yards. Another guy and a good friend of mine can absolutely rip a driver and John will rarely hit it past him. They CNC mill the face effectively making it thinner which allows for more spring off the face. Also weakens the face and make the driver much more prone to cracking.

Interesting. I wouldn’t be too surprised by a big jump with a new ball for a lower swing speed (though I don’t have any real facts or evidence to base that off of). I thought most balls are going to be in the same ballpark off the driver once you swing hard enough. Short game spin would be the difference with a ball switch.
I had an amazing day with accuracy with a Bridgestone e6 Speed once but the distance wasn’t any different.

Was “John” hitting a couple clubs shorter with the irons, too? If the irons were the same, I guess that points to a magical face.

Interesting - and as helpful as SuperSpeed is its not 30 yards helpful unless you hit it 300 to start.

Absolutely. Who wouldn't if you're longer off the tee with a driver? You're going to be playing shorter approaches.

I'll probably play with him again one day before long. At that time I'm going to take a look at this driver face and see if I can see any signs of a shave job. I honestly hope I don't as we're always gambling. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I tried the drivers that MGS used during their testing.  From what I remember,  when you compared the two drivers you could actually tell which was shaved,  one had a shinier face than the other.  I think the shaved one was shinier.   On the G400,  look and see if the grey writing and markings are still on the face,  my guess is that if the driver is shaved, they will be gone unless they were etched or painted back on the face.  If someone else in your group had a G400 you should try and compare the faces.

My Dad was fighting tendinitis in his trail elbow a couple years ago and it was costing him serious yardage off the tee. So I had an identical Titleist head shaved for him to put into play and hopefully pick up some easy yards. He did immediately pick up ~20 yards with the shaved face. However, during the process I learned shaving the face on a black driver turns it silver (the milling removes the black finish). Because the G400 has a black face, if it isn’t silver now, it probably hasn’t been shaved. The process doesn’t make the ball fly any straighter. The face milling also removes the scoring lines and it’s an extra charge to have them cut new ones. Anyway, now you know what to look for. But my guess is your buddy just happened to be smoking his Ping that day because you would have certainly spotted a silver faced G400.

Yes... I gave thought to the guy having "one of those days". I also didn't consider the color of the face as I've not paid close enough attention to the details or face of the G400. Oddly there were 5 of us in the game that day. And three players were swinging a G400 of some flavor. But none of us were as long as John*. Not even close really. I'll see him again one day before long. Then we'll see.

Rob,   Tell your "friend" to look here https://www.worldshottestdrivers.com/.  This is where MGS sent theirs for the lab test that was done and linked in Plaids first post.    There is a link on the front page to the MGS story.

Well, please let us know what you find out.  Another 30-40 yards closer, and tighter, sounds good to me.  So having just looked into this new to me "driver shaving" topic, I wonder just how many amateur players are using them?  I could see this as a powerful elixir to players; particularly as they age and start struggling to keep up with younger bucks!  One of the websites suggested that they can do the modification and restore the face factory finish.  If this is true, it would seem difficult to determine - short of measuring face thickness?  A couple of the more senior guys I play with here in Yuma have driver statistics not in line with the rest of their clubs....🤔

It could be the grip. My brother used to have a very strong grip a he’s fighting every thing hook, block or nasty slice be cause he’s steering the shots. He used to be a big hitter and then drop to my distance. On one round he hurt his finger and adjust to much weaker grip and it just clicked.  He could release fully and fire the hip through impact. That hole he out drove me by 50 yards where I’ve been enjoying slight edge to his distance and other holes that round he out drove my decent drive by 75 yards and never look back. Now I’m back to be the shortest hitter in our group again.

This was, IMO, a particularly good topic for MGS to have reviewed (and well done at that). A juicy, thick T-bone steak of a topic that every golfer is interested in, whether they'll admit it or not.  Let's face it, hitting long drives is embedded in the male DNA.  No one gets on the tee and wants to be the ball watching flyovers and first to hit second shots.  I routinely try and convince myself not to get into the "long drive" contest. But, seeing another in the group send a rocket down the fairway fires up that double helix and the desire to compete.

The advertised 20-40 yards improvement looking more like 10 yards might keep some from playing a non-conforming driver... or would it?  Just how many of these are being played do you think?  I have to be honest, it's tempting.

Looked at that hottestdrivers site. You can send yours in or buy one of theirs .. which includes a G400..... 🤔

They also "highly recommend" Wilson Staff Duo balls, saying...

"These are a low compression ball that will enhance performance and durability on shaved drivers. The lower compression works synergistically with a high COR face."

Anyway, just another reason for me to never ever never play against someone for money.
