A different take-away

Recommended Posts

So as I'm reflecting on my round yesterday, one thing that stands out about it was that I was hitting the snot out of my fairways and that my driver was mostly off. My question to myself of course is: "why?", and a light bulb just came on...I think...

When I am addressing the ball with a wood, part of my mental progression is to always remind myself to start the back-swing by dragging it back and away nice-n-flat before I start lifting the club up and away. I've done this ever since I discovered that by doing so, I generally will get a good solid hit with it and yesterday was no exception. I do not have that same reminder in my driver routine however, but am curious to try it out and see if this technique will help me with driver even though the set-up is completely different what with tee height and ball position.

I am curious to know your thoughts on this (dragging the driver head back a bit before coming up) and also to hear how you all approach your FW shots vs. your driver shots. Thanks!

I think that's a great thought to get the club on plane. It's definitely something you should do with your driver too. A good drill to make sure your takeaway is proper, is to put a glove under your right underarm, and swing your driver while keeping the glove tucked under your underarm until your follow through, when you can let it drop. It keeps your swing on plane and keeps your from getting you arms disconnected from your body.

Does that make sense?

It does indeed. I will certainly give that a whirl!😁 Thank-you!

I think it is a good thought and I have used to during practice with success. When playing I trying to avoid thoughts like this during my actual swing and preswing.

Definitely a valid swing thought, my tendency is to get flat so it may not work as well for me though. As far as the driver vs. fairway goes for me I swing fairly similar with each focusing on turning and staying behind the ball.

I don’t take full practice swings. I normally move the club back a couple times as a one piece take away very similar to how you have described. I usually go from from 6 to 8 o’clock. My objective is to discourage using my hands to take the club away, promote a full shoulder turn, maintain good tempo and to keep the club on plane.

Straight back for the first foot, then up, is a good swing thought for all clubs not just the fairway and driver.

I imagine a laser beam light coming out the sole for the first few feet to help visualisation to keep on plane.

If the thought is working, run with it. One of the drills that my coach (new word usage for me) gave me was to place a tee about 8 inches, just inside the ball. Miss on the way back and through.

At times I will visualize that tee in the ground on all my swings. Similar thought. Use what works.
