Reading online, watching videos, ans skimming books, Ive found multiple ways to measure club length. It looks like the preferreds method is to hold the sole on the floor next to a ruler and take the measure. It seems that human error really could play a role here. I think its preferred as it is the cheapest.

Another way which seems accurate to me is a flat ruler for the bench with an Djustable solw plate.

Thoughts?

That's pretty much how I've done it in the past. Tried to do it with the club laying down on the floor or table, but it just never seemed to be as accurate as the club head on the floor position.

That's the way to do it. You may want to get a club making ruler, it takes the guess work out of it completely.

You can lay the club on a table place a ruler along the sole of the club aka LIE ANGLE. Then measure down the backside of the shaft to the ruler. The fudge factor comes in when you don't match the lie angle to your measurement.

The USGA has a procedure in which to measure club length

USGA procedure

However it is a go- no go gauge, meaning it is only testing for max allowable length of the club.

I did a video a year ago on length

what is length

There gobs (that's a technical term) of gadgets out there to measure length. There are also a ton of considerations to measuring length so long as its less than 48" and longer the 18"  you are all good.  Which brings into question just how is it really done?

While trying to stay as close to the directive in the procedure I would consider a machine/rule/gadget in that the club lays horizontally. I would also measure to the crown of the grip. That's the beginning of the angle of cap, IMO it eliminates the bowing of the cap if put on too far. Secondly and as we all know that iron lie angles change (unless single clubs are in the bag). So you have a choice. Measure ALL your clubs at 60 deg i.e. the Mitchell ruler or allow for a change in the lie angle, this will include the changes in driver lie angles. with an adjustable plate for the club to sole against.  Golf Mechanix, Golf works etc.

Keeping in mind its what fits your own personal logic make up so long as you don't go too long or too short.

Thanks McGolf...I watched your video and ended up buying a Golfworks table top Exact Measuring Tool.  I like consistency and removing as much human error as possible.

Good video. I liked the 60* bench plane measuring  device. Thought the putter measuring tool was interesting as well. Never seen that before.

Thanks!
