Smoltz leads celebrity golf tournament

I just read that John Smoltz is leading a celebrity golf tournament using a self standing putter. What is the sorcery? Does anyone know what putter it is?

Looks like it's made by Bloodline Golf. Apparently it is completely legal!

Bridgestone made one a few years ago as well. The grip was made out of a foam or something. Very strange feeling.

The USGA confirmed the putter’s legality in a statement, saying that self-standing putters, only when placed right next to the ball (as they are intended to be used), are allowed to be used to assist the player in taking a stance or to point out the line of play.

Smoltz, 51, qualified for the U.S. Senior Open in 2018. He didn’t use the Bloodline at The Broadmoor because it was too windy. Smoltz, who struggles with alignment, plays often with the Bloodline at home but wanted to give it a try in competition this week.

So it is a Bloodline.

Interesting, minus the price tag, I could see myself trying one of these. I sometimes struggle with my alignment, and being able to see it, before I hit the shot would be helpful. I do question why this is legal and anchoring isn't. It seems like the USGA is arbitrarily picking what is legal and what isn't. No logical reasoning!

These have been legal for a long time as there have been others that stand up.  The Bloodline putters were tested during last years most wanted and I didn't like them.   Biggest reason was that I felt like I would break/bend the carbon shaft.  The second was that the alignment aspect wasn't something I liked.   I setup with the face slightly open because that looks right to me at address,   when I looked at the bloodline alignment it didn't look right and I think impacted my swing.   

I don't question its legality against anchoring,  but that the rules have been changed to not allow caddies or the used of a club laid on the ground to help align a player.
