knightsofnii
I won this set from the MGS donor raffle! I figure I should do a review, I didnt see any review of these with graphite shafts. I play steel shafts, so this should be interesting. This will take some time, it's super cold here in NJ. I'll get to a range soon enough. knightsofnii
Last pic is my 5,6,7i with the Wilson 7i. You can see I had my irons shortened a bit, a bit over-shortened actually. But the C300s are long for standard length. The 5i is 38.5" and most irons 5i standard is 38-38.25. Swinging them as is, there will definitely be more distance due to length but Ill probably be pulling shots. Also, the club heads are huge, but the top at address doesnt appear annoyingly thick or super offset like other GI irons out there. The black power slots may trick the eye a bit into thinking they're thinner. RADspeed 10.5, Evenflow Riptide CB 6.0s Bio Cell 3/4w, PXV 6.0s; AMP 3h 19deg Aldila RIP R. tony@CIC
Here's the link to the C300 official forum review. However the reviews were all steel shafts. Mine were ordered with KBS 90 shafts, so it'll be interesting to see how the graphite shafts work for you. FYI, the build sheet says my 5 iron is 38.50. 6 hours ago, knightsofnii said: You can see I had my irons shortened a bit, a bit over-shortened actually. But the C300s are long for standard length. (..and if you end up not liking them maybe we'll work out a deal ) Sounds good! I've only hit my wife's graphite irons, I can't use that for comparison. My comparison irons are Miz JPX 825 Pros. 1deg flat, 1/2" short. I got them from 2ndSwing.com and had the adjustments and regripping added for cheap! After wrongly falling for the AMP Pro Rickie Fowler clubs, the JPX are a nice compact shape that's more toward the GI side of Player's Cavity. I had the cast JPX 825 in the past, these are the forgiveness of those plus the Mizuno feel :). The Mizunos are already strong lofts, the Wilsons are stronger. I will have a big gap between Wilson's 44deg PW and my 50deg GW. I'm already expecting them to be longer just based on loft and shaft length. We'll see if I can control them. knightsofnii
I played a round yesterday morning. It was long, it was windy, it was tough. Constant 20-30mph wind. Between that, not golfing since October, and trying new swing things, I will say these irons did not hurt nor help. Sorry I have few answers so far. One thing I was curious about is how resilient they are to rocks/pebbles/gravelly bunkers. Ill have that answer soon as I'm hitting a handful of shots from the "desert rough". They're already pretty scuffed up. They look like monster trucks, so we went off-roading!! RADspeed 10.5, Evenflow Riptide CB 6.0s Bio Cell 3/4w, PXV 6.0s; AMP 3h 19deg Aldila RIP R. With this wind I definitely crushed some near 300 yd drives. But, hah, against the wind.... just aim for the adjacent left fairway and pray it's inbounds right. Cool to hit "bubba shots" though! :). knightsofnii
I played Tierra Del Sol again yesterday. They have a Friday afternoon special rate. Same wind, paired up with two older dudes that were super fun to play with. Took all the pressure off. Guessing 2 or 3 clubs against the wind was a fun challenge. Especially with no idea the range of these Wilsons. I'm guessing the 9i is gonna carry 130-135. Into the wind I used it for 89-105 yd shots. It was so cool to see it launch, baloon to about 100 feet and hover. I was able to get distances right into and with the wind, but i couldnt shape shots with side winds as well, irons were pretty much dead straight. Except for the one 8i with a left right wind that I put hole high right about 12 feet. I shot 52 front, 40 back for 92. 92 is lower than avg for me and 40 ties my best 9. knightsofnii
So after 2 rounds, so far the only con is the grip feel. The texture is great for the first few holes, but it is pretty coarse. During both rounds I found myself using my right hand glove. knightsofnii
These were the 3 most used irons. Got a nice chip in the PW. NOTE I was playing in desert where the rough and native areas were dirt/rocky. There were many instances of giving myself relief, no reason to hit through all rocks, but I must have hit a couple. knightsofnii
I got to play my home course yesterday: Basking Ridge CC in New Jersey. I warmed up at the range and then played the front 9. My 50 deg Cleveland wedge got so rusty from my last trip, It was easily showing me where I hit each ball on the face. I had the same tendency with these irons. I noticed my shots all seem to be about 1cm towards the toe, and low to mid face. I would concentrate on trying to get a center strike, and on the occasion I did, I could really feel the trampoline effect, and just that feeling that I knocked it out of the park. I have a lot of pulls left and straight to right fades, due to my over the top swing. Shots 5mm-10mm toward the heel felt better and had better ball flight than 10mm to the toe. I would say the sweet spot on these irons has a heel bias. This could also be fitting issues: ie. too upright lie for me and a toe biased strike is low on face, heel biased strike becoming more mid face height. ***If I win the GP MCC+4 Align grips, I will go to a fitter and get these cut, bent, and regripped (including my wedge). It is part of the plan anyway*** My round was not so great, but I had many solid iron shots. A lot of pulls that were manageable, some would fade back a little. My distance is down quite a bit in general, not in comparison to other clubs, I just need to work out some and ease into this season. knightsofnii
Another day at the range. Most of my shots are still toe side of ctr or off the toe, even when I tried to shank it! I fiddled around with technique and was able to find center more often after about 200 balls. Pics show the marks on my 8i after a dozen shots or so. Center struck shots go high, far(farther than normal), and a small draw. I had to open the face a little and force myself to purposefully hit to the right, which shallowed the path and got me more towards a desirable plane. If I wanted a fade, I just set up with the ball more forward and let my natural OTT move do the work I have my Mizuno 6i in the bag and try to make some comparison shots and I feel like I can't even hit it in comparison. The Wilsons definitely allow more room for error and I've grown accustomed to the gigantic club heads. RADspeed 10.5, Evenflow Riptide CB 6.0s Bio Cell 3/4w, PXV 6.0s; AMP 3h 19deg Aldila RIP R.
