MaxEntropy
Security is probably the biggest advantage - it's a lot harder to get even simple info like your location. IMO, the main disadvantage is your connection speed will slow. I've heard you can access content that may be locked based on your geography (streaming services, for example), but if your speed is slowed so you end up with buffering, does it really do you any good? I'm interested to hear if there are any other I'm not considering. perseveringgolfer
I use HOLA- free, for some sites that dont stream to my area like the Golf Channel and the USPGA who restrict video content outside the US. You are correct that it slows up my speed considerably. russtopherb
Unsure why anyone would want to use a VPN on a phone, unless you like having a fancy expensive paperweight. I do use one at home occasionally when I need to log into the same service with multiple accounts for testing, as well as for checking website response times when I'm working on a few things. But unless you're trying to circumvent region restrictions or you're doing something that's just shy of being on the up and up, there's really not much call for a VPN from what I've found. Kenny B
Before I retired, working in national security we were required to use VPN, and yes it is slower. “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
TR1PTIK
If you aren't using a VPN for all web uses, I don't know why any average person would use it at all. There are reasons (very good reasons) to use a VPN but it's overkill for most people. People are finally figuring out that everyone who cautioned about sharing too much online during the early days of the Internet weren't just crying wolf. Sadly, unless you've hit the nuke button on all of your accounts and gone through extraordinary measures to scrub your online identify chances are you're stuff is already out there. You could argue about ad targeting and online activity monitoring, but who really cares. The stuff that could actually harm you is either out there already or vulnerable by another source such as financial institutions, government agencies, medical facilities, etc. etc.. IMO your money is better spent on a service like LifeLock than a VPN. There are other companies besides Lifelock though - they were just the first to spring to mind. I've had Lifelock or something similar in the past, but I honestly don't even bother with that anymore. Couldn't justify the cost given other circumstances. The main point in saying that is if you're going to spend money on a VPN or Identity Theft Protection, I'd choose the latter. I've had my personal information stolen (primarily credit/debit card information) on a number of occasions. It's a headache, but if you're on top of your finances it's pretty easy to recover from such incidents. In most if not all the cases, my bank and/or credit card companies were very helpful and even purchased an identity theft product to cover a certain timeframe (like a year maybe?).
