Iron Gapping/Bending

I have an RSI 2 and RSI TP combo set. I have the 3-7 (RSI 2) and 8-P (RSI TP): Lofts are:19, 21, 24, 27, 31, 38, 42, 47. The gap from my 7-8 iron where the set splits is 7°. Would it be silly to buy a RSI TP 7 iron at 34° to fill that gap? Alternatively, I've thought about bending the lofts on the *NEW 7 iron through P to be 34, 39, 44, 49.

Resulting lofts would be 19, 21, 24, 27, 31, 34, 39, 44, 49.

Or would you just bend my current 8-PW a little stronger and replace my 52,56, and 60 to a 50, 54, 58° set-up?

Thanks guys!

Really it all depends on yardages and not lofts. Some people need large spacing and others less. In wedges there’s all kinds of setups based on what type of shots people play, what the last full swing club is.

what are your carry distances with each club?

I'd look at the distance gap before I made any adjustments based purely on loft. That said, I think I'd look at strengthening the lofts of the 8, 9, & PW (depending on what it does to stopping power at least). 2* stronger on those closes that 7-8 gap down to 5* and you're not straying too far from the lofts of many clubs produced today. The 34* 7 iron is a decent option as well, but I'd consider dropping the 19* depending on wedge setup and how losing that particular club would impact the gaps at the long end of your bag.

Best thing to do is find a fitter or instructor with a launch monitor and get a professional opinion based on the data. A simple gap analysis and loft/lie adjustment isn't very expensive. I did this with my irons in 2016 and it only set me back $75 - granted he advertises $125 for that service, but we moved through the bag so quick he cut me a break.

I agree with what’s been said thus far - test the club’s first to determine the actual yardage gap and then adjust accordingly - I would think making the 8 iron 2 degrees stronger and the 9 iron one degree will even the gaps out.

It’s a fun exercise to ponder. :)

Good luck

If you get the RSI 2's bent, make sure it's by someone who really knows what they are doing. I had mine adjusted for lie angle, and they had to be taken about 3 degrees past where we wanted to end up as they sprung back significantly. I could barely watch.

The guy doing it is a very experienced club builder and he knew how far to take them to get them ending up at the correct angle, but said he really doesn't like having more than one attempt at bending cast irons as they are much more likely to have problems if multiple passes are needed.

Bending the TP's should be easier (I think they are forged?) so adjusting them rather than the 2's would be the logical way to go. Remember bounce changes in the opposite direction to loft changes, not to big a deal with small adjustments but large changes might cause problems.

I carry two 5 irons. Carrying two 7 irons wouldn’t be weird unless I grabbed the wrong one out of your bag for you.

Like mentioned before, check the distance gaps. If there is a large enough gap, two 7 irons would be fine. Cameron Champ carries two 4 irons. Nothing wrong with it, as long as it works well.

Update: Ended up purchasing some very nice used Sm7's in 50, 54, and 58° to replace my current set. Plan is to bend my 8-P pending a gapping session. May end up bending the new wedges as well. And extra 7 iron is still in play as well.

Thanks!
