Progressive Lenses for Golf

Wedgie

Recommended Posts

I mentioned this in another thread but figured I start a new one. I started wearing progressive lenses about three years ago and could never wear them to play golf. There was too much distortion, I hit everything fat and putting was just off when I wore them. I can play just fine without them but really struggle to see a scorecard, read a GPS, phone and things like that.

A few weeks ago I went to the eye doctor and explained to him I’d like contacts or even surgery if it would help me see better while golfing. He suggested golf specific progressive lenses. I picked them up about a week and a half ago and wear them daily and they have been great for everyday use. I have been doing a ton living room putting with no distortion or consistent misses right which was my previous issue.

Today I wore them to hit about 30 or so balls with no issue hitting the ball fat. In fact some of the best contact I’ve had in a long time. I know it’s a very small sample size but I feel like these will work for me and hopefully for others.

The lenses are made by Essilor and called Definity. Here is a picture that is pretty self explanatory.

I won’t play real golf until March so will update more at that time.

I've worn progressives for about 7 years now and not found them to be an issue for golf.  These may offer a solution for those who do find them problematic.

Thanks - never heard of this option. I've been playing with progressives for the past 8 years. The only issue I have is putting - I feel it distorts the line. Going to have to try these.

I don't wear progressives, but as someone who does wear glasses and CANNOT STAND THEM, I applaud you for sharing such good news with fellow golfers who might not be aware of golf specific lenses (I certainly wasn't). 👊

Nice to hear they're going well thus far.  I usually wear glasses for work (staring at screen), but other than that do not need them.  I find that I do putt better when I have contacts in and get a clearer picture of the track I want my ball to roll on, but my eyes get too dry that it creates more discomfort.

Maybe if I can pick up some glasses a la Tom Kite, I'll wear them out on the course 😀

I wear progressives with  correction for double vision and cannot wear them while golfing. I usually just swing at the ball on the right. Very interested to hear your results and if it might be an option for me.

I’ve sworn for years that my progressive lenses were messing with my game... very interested in this.

another option perhaps is the new surgically implanted lenses , I think they’re called “multi-focal”-  and then you don’t even need glasses period.but not sure how they’re do for golfing. It would suck to get them surgically implanted, and then find out they don’t work for golfing...

I went the opposite way. I have never in my life been able to play golf in glasses and the few times I have had to it was just not pretty.

Went to progressive lenses a month or so ago and can now play golf in glasses for the first time in my life. I also was fit for multifocal contacts that work great as well.

Those contacts are very interesting. You can see both near and far with them, correct?

kind of has numerous points of focus, and the brain is able to select the correct ones in like micro seconds?

I tried contacts about 20 years ago and didn’t really care for them, they were so hard for me to remove... I would imagine they’ve improved in small, but significant ways since then...

That is pretty much how they work. They go in like normal contacts and help with distance and up close.

Interesting about there being golf-specific progressives. I have regular progressives and have had no issues whatsoever with golf. I made sure to get the higher quality lenses with much smaller distortion zones, so perhaps that's why I've never had an issue.

Same here.  Been wearing them even longer than that.  In the market for new glasses after a fall a couple weeks ago left several little scratches on lens that are starting to drive me crazy.

You may have nailed it russtopherb.  3 years ago I took my prescription to Len Crafters and just got whatever.  This time I told the eye doctor about my specific needs and he said not all prescriptions are created equally.  I guess you get what you pay for.

I got mine at Lenscrafters too, and they warned me about larger distortion zones with the lower cost lenses. I have 3 monitors at work and I constantly go back and forth between them, so I wanted as little issues as possible. It was pricey but so far has been worth it, and like I said above - never had a problem on the course with them.

My eye dr wants to surgically install new multi-focal lenses into my eyes, which sounds both interesting and scary at the same time.

but then, I would be able to get some cool sunglasses for the first time in over 20 years 😎

Just to update I played 18 yesterday with the new lenses and had no issues that I previously experienced with progressives. Ball striking was great but putting sucked. Took off the glasses and putting still sucked and ball striking got worse. I look at the hole when I putt and will need more rounds to determine if glasses will help with that aspect of my game.
