WR3
9 hours ago, joshuac3 said: Let us know how your chat goes. I’m in a similar ponder and either set is considerably cheaper than most sets I can get used after customizing for length and lie. Tour Edge seems to be the only other OEM in the ballpark. I’m above an 18 myself, but I can’t see myself using SGI irons for more than a season. Had good first initial convo with Jason, wants me to swing 6/7 iron at PGA Superstore to get my swing speed as I don’t have the number handy. He said that he would probably recommend 699 over 739 as I’ll (hopefully) continue to improve and the 699’s would be good ‘improvement’ club and would play to a potential lower handicap as well. More importantly, still trying to figure out lie angles/offset for me as we both agree that I want to be able to get the ball in the air as easily as I can. Same thing with shaft, he thinks I would be a stiff flex based off few things we discussed and would recommend heavier shaft as I’m currently playing really light, game improvement (r-flex) shaft. So I’ve still got some homework to do but just really appreciate that the owner of a reputable golf company would hop on the phone and talk/walk me through options on a new iron set that would work for my golf game. Guarantee you that’s not happening with the big dog OEM’s out there.... WR3
I was able to head over to the PGA Superstore this past weekend and swing some different clubs & shafts. I wasn't able to look at a lot of options but I tried to stay within the recommendations that Jason brought up (TM 790 & Cobra Forged Tech - which are both similar to the 699, both with stiff shafts to test). Here are the titles within each chart listed below: Ball Speed / Launch Angle / Side Angle / Backspin / Sidespin / Descent Angle / Offline / Peak / Carry / Total Below are my swing stats from my own Callaway X2 Hot 7 Iron, True Temper Speed Step 85 Reg. Flex Shaft: Below are my swing stats from Cobra Forged Tech 7 Iron, Mobus3 NS Pro 105 Tour Stiff Shaft: Below are my swing stats from TM 790 7 Iron, KBS Max MT 85 Stiff Shaft (its labeled SIM MAX, but that is not what was used): The guy who was helping me took out the 'bad swings' to have a better idea of how each club performed with my swing. He also said that my swing speed seems to be between 80/90, I asked several times but he wasn't able to give that to me. We weren't able to look at lie angles or moving the clubhead more upright, etc, which I know are really important to look at with new clubs. He mentioned that I could play the 2 clubs that I tested but could also stay within the GI irons, if I still wanted to do that. My current set, I bought off the rack and was no where close to being fit to me so I'd really like to get as custom as possible for my next set. Jason @ Sub70 said that he would call me later today to discuss. I'll see if I can demo some clubs b/c I'm just not sure if I should stay within the 739 GI irons or go with the 699 irons, plus not sure if I need to step up to stiff shaft or stay with regular shaft. Tom the Golf Nut
I know you didn't address this to me but I also went with the JB wedge over the 286. The JB has a different grind that allows you to open or close the face without changing the amount of turf interaction. So you can play different type of shots easier. On a typical wedge with standard grind and bounce, once you roll the face open the leading edge gets further from the ground. I just got to try mine out this past Sunday and I really liked it. Everything came out of the sand well, even wet sand and off the fairway was easy. We've had the 739 irons available for roughly two years now. In the first year they were selling well but they were probably one of the slower movers in our product line. COVID hit and golf participation ended up skyrocketing. Suddenly there were tons of guys playing golf who had never really played before or had 10+ year old irons. Those irons worked perfectly fine when they only played 4-5 times a year but the golfer wanted/needed an upgrade now that they were playing more often. Suddenly the 739 demand went through the roof.
