Without rereading all 32 pages, is anyone gaming the utility irons, or 699/699U combo?

I have a 699/699 Pro combo set, but ran into someone with a Pro Utility at the range the other day. Looked like a nice club. I took a few air swings with it - he had a HZRDUS Black shaft in it.

I think the 699 Pros are quite forgiving themselves. The difference between the 699 and 699 Pros really comes down to offset, I believe. My 4-6 699s have considerably more offset than the 7-AW 699 Pros.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd go Pro 4 Utility, 5-AW 699 Pros.

Thanks @edingc I suppose I should just fire off an order on a demo set.

I haven't been fit, and do not really know my swing speed so I guess I should just order the same flex that I am currently playing?

Edit: Nevermind, no regular flex demo 699s currently.

I have a 3U that I really like as a fairway finder.  I had the standard graphite Sub 70 Project X shaft and actually broke it twice.  They replaced it for free both times and we eventually settled on a Project X U-steel.  Its a great club and pretty easy to pick the ball off the turf, but it's best off the tee.

I played 9 last night and it was incredibly windy.  I ripped one about 260 and out drove three of my playing partners (they all hit driver).  Highly recommended, but it is a bit of a specialty club.

I play the 699 Pro 3-iron. Bought it in the spring this year and subbed in the Modus Tour 120 shaft to match my irons. Course I play regularly is hazardous (putting it mildly) so keeping it safe off the tee is a must. 699 Pro works great and the feel is awesome. I've hit it off the fairway and out of the rough as well without issue. Really can't say enough good things about it.

Just call the owner Jason directly and ask him all the questions you need about shafts. One of the best things about Sub70 is the personalized customer service. Plus the clubs are great too.

I want to try out the new 799. I'm not exactly new to golf, I just started playing a lot more this last year. I think I could really benefit from a game improvement iron rather than my 716 AP2s. The price for a complete set is pretty amazing, but I want to swing them a bit before a purchase. It doesn't look like the 799s are even an option to demo at this point. I live in Ohio and have 2 lil kiddos, so making the time to take a trip to Sub 70 is out of the question (although it would make for a fun dudes trip).  Anywhere else I can give those bad puppies and try or anyone hear if they will be doing demos for them anytime soon? And any suggestions for a game improvement iron or SGI is much appreciated. I hit some TM SIM2 Max OS this week and thought they were okay, just a bit more expensive and not as many no-cost customizations as the 799.

Definitely.  Reach out to Cody.  Typically when a new product comes out we wait a little bit before getting it into the demo program.  With inventory shortages/delays this year due to COVID, we just want to make sure we can fulfill orders before pulling heads to build demo sets.  That being said, he may be able to get a couple out to you or at least give you an idea of when they might be available through the demo program.  Thank you!

Just an update with my new 699 pros's.  4 rounds in still figuring out distances, I say this since these clubs are more reliable or should say less of guess with yardage, more accurate depending on my swing of course. I am absolutely making better shots.  Shot my lowest round in about 2 years (86) at Gearhart Links from the black tees. Also have dropped my handicap a full point. I really don't care about the handicap as I am fun hitting these clubs and learning what I can do with the clubs. I am having a harder time hitting a draw and actually have more of a fade. I have for years been a draw guy so I just need to get used to the ball flight. So far I am liking the decision to purchase these clubs.

This year I played a mixed set of 699u 2 iron & 5 iron, 699 6 iron and 699 pro 7-PW with the Project x stiff graphite shafts.

I really enjoyed the irons overall.  But I've changed to the Ping i210 for a bit more distance consistency via more loft and spin.

The sub70 699 family of irons are superb for distance and are very forgiving.

Their downside, for me, is the occasional lack of spin causing big flyers and big distance dispersion.  I have average swing speed and carry 9 iron typically 140 yards.  As an example of the flyers I've had numerous back pins, like 146y to pin and hit stock 9 iron to ensure stay short of the hole since long is dead, and have it fly in the mid 150's to carry over everything by a large margin leaving big problems.  The occasional 7 iron, which averages 174y carry with 6k spin will often spin 4.2k off the tee and carry 190's.

Launch monitor spin numbers show the significant spin deviation, which can get extreme from rough, and it cost me roughly 2 shots on the handicap this year, hence the change to the i210's in retro lofts recently.

If you need distance and forgiveness then the 699 family is great.  If you want control via predictable spin then not so much.  Just my experience.

My 699 combo set is on the market.  1 degree upright, standard length, lofts progressively weakened from factory on shorter irons to tame carry distances a bit (i.e. PW is 46*), standard tour velvet 360 grips.

Mavrik 9* Driver / Mavrik 15* 3W / Callaway Razr Fit 18* 5W (stiff graphite, standard)

@ChrisNH Im confused. When you say your stock 9i is 140, and you had one fly 155ish off the tee, are you implying your stock 140y shot is off a tee and that is what you expected?

I know I am a noob with a high handicap, but iron shots off tees always go longer than off a fairway, correct?

I didn't say anything about the 9i off the tee, just gave example of approach to back pin.

7 iron I referenced off the tee, but it really doesn't matter whether from fairway or tee as I don't see any real carry distance difference off tee or from fairway.  In both cases the ball is struck prior to low point in swing arc so it's always ball first.

The somewhat inconsistent spin numbers across the face is what causes the low spin shots to fly farther.  From the rough, those 699 lower spin tendencies (that all hollow body irons seem to suffer from a bit) and resulting spin inconsistencies are exacerbated.

Anyone compare the 699 with Maltby TS-1?

I won’t speak to playability or “feel” as they’re very subjective and dependent on too many factors, but here is a comparison side-by-side.

Maltby is in the middle of the 699 Pros in every pic. The 699s aren’t pictured, and are slightly bigger in top line width, blade length, and offset.

I had them ship me their demo clubs.  A 5 iron and a 9 iron.  I'm 70 years old, so I have trouble hitting my RocketBladz 5 iron and theirs was no different.  The 9 iron however was very nice.  It felt great and flew a few yards further than my current 9 iron.  Still wasn't enough to justify spending the money.

Small hiccup their customer service is the best I have seen in ages.  Took minutes to reply and minutes to fix a hiccup ( been waiting almost a year for tour edge to reply).
the feel of the 639’s is awesome and mishits are not punished that bad.

I am a higher handicap (19) and every fitting I have been put into game improvement irons and have never hit as good as the 639’s  I thought long and hard about stepping it up too the 639’s and then I realized no one fitter has ever asked why my handicap is so high. Driver I usually put 10 to 20 extra strokes due to being too stupid to stop playing my driver. If I am not teeing off 3 then it’s 5 or I topped it 50 yards. So I finally realized my iron play is very good it was my driver killing me.

so the 639’s fit my play and are beautiful clubs.

so today the hiccup was fixed and my 639mb 8-pw came in and all I have to say is wow 🤩. Only had a few minutes to hit them in my studio and another wow 🤩.  Plus they included a awesome hat that I will have to sport at my tournament on Monday. Picks will follow.

also they have the best packaging of clubs I have seen in a long time.

While Sub 70 wont end up in my bag, I cannot recommend highly enough the demo process. Dealing with Cody (mentioned on the previous page) has been an absolute pleasure. I would definitely reach out to him if there is more than one club head you're interested in testing.
