I also live in Mercer County, NJ and in my opinion both Mercer Oaks East and West are great layouts, but the course conditions are terrible anymore.  Greens are barely cut & never rolled resulting in bumpy slow as molasses speeds.  Bunkers on the East course could house tree farms with all the shrubbery that has been allowed to grow in them.  Many of the tee boxes are terrible too on both courses, etc. etc.   We used to have much better conditions all around but now all the county cares about is profit so they don't put any money back into the courses and the results are blindingly clear.

For $260 I go over to Monmouth county and purchase the full privilege non resident county card and I get county rates and all the privileges just like regular residents do.   I play Charleston Springs North and South, Hominy Hill, & Howell Park.  All kept in amazing condition with great greens & speeds etc.  Worth every penny of the $260 to get the card!

Curious, I grew up playing Monmouth and now living in Ocean, I concur with your mentioned courses. I learned to play at pine brook then played Hominy Hill and Colts Neck typically.

Curious, with a non resident county card, how much is fees at the 3 mentioned? And how much do they charge for a cart? Typical $15-20? I see Charlston is $25 after 1 online.

Hi KOG,

I buy the full privilege non resident card and pay exactly what regular residents of Monmouth pay, same prices for everything and anything golf related.  I'm a walker so I don't take carts so I can't speak to those costs.  I know CSprings has after 4pm any day of the week a deal for $39 dollars including cart with or without a county card so I have done some days going out at 5pmish attempting to get in 18 but other than that I walk everywhere.  I've looked up the county rates and included a link here if you want to see them.

In my opinion Monmouth has the best overall county courses in NJ especially with those 4 all being great

Hello,

Recently returning to golf/ southeastern PA after living in SC, CT and CA the past few years with little to no time to golf. Got my old golf clubs out and I'm looking to get back into golf.

Can anyone recommend instructors and fitters in southeastern PA?

Near King of Prussia, PA if that helps at all.

Current WITB is in my signature, I am looking to upgrade my irons and get them fitted after a lesson or two to get my swing back in the ballpark where it needs to be.

Hello golfers!  So I've finally decided to update my profile and to participate in this forum more often.  So here goes.

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? - I started playing golf in my forty's and now I'm 61 (this April).  Not a great golfer or even a good golfer, but I love the game and I normally score in the high 90's.

What do you love about golf? - For me the best part of playing this game is being outdoors either by myself enjoying nature or with a group of my buddies talking trash.  Or course with golf there is a level of frustration when I hit a bad shot, but the heavens open up and the sun shines a little brighter when I smoke one down the fairway or get on the green in two.

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? - I joined MyGolfSpy probably 10 years ago, but just never took the time to participate.  That is about to change.

Where are you from? What is your home course? - I live in Williamsburg Virginia.  I don't really have a home course because there are so many courses to play in this area.  My favorite courses however are The Green Course at Golden Horseshoe and Royal New Kent in Providence Forge.  And once a year (usually in the Fall) a group of us take a trip to Ocean City, Maryland for a weekend golf outing.  This year we plan to plan to play at Baywood Greens Golf Course in Delaware, The Links at Lighthouse Sounds Golf Course and The Links at Rum Pointe Golf Course in OC Maryland.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? - The courses here are absolutely beautiful in the Spring Summer and Fall, but Winter golf can be messy and cold.

What do you do for a living? - For my daytime job I'm a Senior Systems Administrator for a closed network.  In the evenings I'm a couch potato.

How’d you pick your user name? - Lack of creativity.

Hello I joined a little after this and missed this thread when scanning. I'm a decent drive from you, but find myself in some of the same areas you would most likely. I'm in central NJ.

I took a trip to Golf Galaxy in Mt. Laurel near the PA border and everyone working there is knowledgeable even the younger guys behind the cash register seemed like a golf gear junkie from chatting for a minute about my purchase.

I'd say it's worth a trip, and near a TopGolf location for some quick practice on a rainy day.

Shark River has $20 walking $40 to ride twilight I asked about rates when I played early March. It was 2pm at that time, but may change to 3pm at some point.

A long overdue introduction for me here. I’m from New Jersey. Let’s give this a shot.

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?
I started playing golf a little less than a year ago. I played a couple random outings over the years with my friend’s old hand me down set of clubs. Finally played an NFL Alumni outing (I’m not current or former NFL) with a couple guys who were REALLY good and out of my league, but it got me hooked. I’m currently a 19ish handicap and normally shoot in the mid to low 90s. I haven’t been playing long, but I’ve been working really hard to improve my game.

What do you love about golf?

I love the challenge of golf. It’s difficult, but normally if you’re doing something (ie: slicing, fat shots, etc.) there is a reason why and it and through focus and hard work, it’s fixable. Plus the rush of hitting a good shot isn’t bad either. Lol

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

I do not know any other spies. I am hear for knowledge and a community who loves the same game I do. I’ve been apart of similar forums in the past and know how important these communities are to the game/culture.

Where are you from? What is your home course?

I’m from NJ. Normally play Ocean Acres, Cedar Creek, Atlantis, and pretty much anywhere that’l let me on.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

Winters make it difficult to practice. I have a set up in the garage I use too much according to the wife lol.

What do you do for a living?

For the sake of not getting yelled at, I’ll just say garbage man. Lol

Current season goals: My goal for this year is to break 90 and hopefully be able to play consistent golf in the mid to upper 80s.

Also, thank you to MGP and the moderators for having a resource like this and for the hard work that you do!

Keep moving forward

Hello, nice to see someone relatively local. I rarely get down to your area, but found Cedar Creek last season and have played 4 times. That back 9 breaks me every time.

My dad used to live in Mystic Islands right by Atlantis so I am familiar with that course, I spent summers wandering the woods adjoining the course and watching people scuba dive for balls in some of the lakes. At that time my golf set was Fisher Price brand plastic 3 piece set, lol, so I never played there. Have been thinking of getting down there in June/July when dad is home from FL.

I ended up joining Cream Ridge in Monroe as the price was very reasonable at $2500 w cart per year, but man, these greens are so fast. Its like they are trying to make it as hard as possible. Well, I guess Ill improve my putting this year.

That isn't bad at all. Is hole #17 done being repaired? I only got to play 17 last time I went there and was a little aggravated.

Not sure how far Golf Galaxy in Oxford Valley is for you, but I'd heavily recommend Jason Krier who is the PGA Pro there. I've used him off an on for over 10 years

It's funny- I've never played Cream Ridge and have heard mixed reviews about course conditions there.

I know the course is fairly straightforward so sounds like they bumb up the green speed as it's only method of defense

Welcome!  My brother in law grew up playing Atlantis and was an assistant pro at Sea Oaks for many years before he got out of the golf business.

My parents have a place in Beaxh Haven West so we are always playing courses down that way in the summer

I usually give back all the strokes I earned on the front 9 to the back 9 there…. Now that I think of it, I do that with every course haha. Spent 2 hours today working on chipping, putting, and shorter pitch shots. I gotta buy the county card for Atlantis.

Keep moving forward

Yeah the lay out isnt very hard but the greens are well known for being difficult and tiered so your approach has to be accurate. The course was in bad condition till they hired an excellent greens keeper 5 years ago who has lots of experience in Baltusrol, I think, and they seem to be constantly working on it. Its been good past few years under his supervision and they were redoing the 1st tees this morning.  Compared to some courses around here, conditions are not bad at all. Lots of the bad reviews seem older before the efforts. The course is more about accuracy due to the green tiers. Def worth the $25  "hot deal" w cart on golf now if you never played. Its worth it or sure.

Tomorrow I have a single booked at Pennsauken CC 3:10 pm was $32 through golf now with a 20% off discount they're running.

I saw some positive reviews in this thread when I searched the site, definitely influenced my decision.

I think 4 hours will be ample time, considering it's par 70 (or 68 I forget, I was deciding between 2)

Hi RichK!

I've played it a few times and it's always been in very good shape for a public muni course.  If you haven't played it before, in my opinion it has some fairly straight forward holes that are reasonable to score well on and some very difficult holes that par will be a great score.  Greens are the big defense as they tend to be quick and fairly sloped/undulated.  I think it plays harder than it reads on paper overall, but I've only played it from the back tees at its longest.

Hope you enjoy and play well!

Thanks for the scouting, @Ryan Luke

I'm on a constant break 80 hunt, so I'll likely play from the white, 5913 yards the website says. My course handicap according to the calculator is +18 from the blue, +16 from the white. 79 net -7 is a reasonable goal for me if the greens are rolling and I can wake up this putter.

My report back on Pennsauken CC, @Ryan Luke your advice was spot on.

Good news, 3 pars for net birdies along the way and a nice easy par on #1 just missed birdie. I shot 43-41 with 36 putts.

I'd be happy with that, but...we skipped hole #2 on account of pace and I picked up on #11 on account of aggravation. Once the flow of the game was disrupted by skipping a hole it basically became a practice round. I chunked an 8i as the last one to tee off at #3, with the group we skipped watching..always seems to happen.

Later on my group ran into a group of 2 with a slow foursome in front, so we played #14-18 as a group of 6 and still caught them at every hole. They were slow, must have been putting 12s and 13s on the card. Double par +1, gents.

No time or energy to go back and play #2 and the fact I left #11 blank means I wasn't adamant about finishing the scorecard. #11 is 130yd par 3, one of the easiest holes but a chunk off the tee I lost my ball in fescue, dropped and skulled it to the 12th tee. That was the universe saying "go smoke a cigarette and chill out for 5 minutes.

Never put more than 2 holes together at a time of actual golf, 5x 3 putts on the 16 holes I played. Greens are very challenging.20230316_145745.jpg.d535048c06fbda43aa8e996cf7bc9085.jpg20230316_171221.jpg.622097ae27277d518f3e26dac6523e01.jpg20230316_190436.jpg.eed896d10b04312480ecb825f831344c.jpg

#11 is 130yd par 3, one of the easiest holes but a chunk off the tee I lost my ball in fescue, dropped and skilled it to the 12th tee. That was the universe saying "go smoke a cigarette and chill out for 5 minutes.

Never put more than 2 holes together at a time of actual golf, 5x 3 putts on the 16 holes I played. Greens are very challenging.20230316_145745.jpg.d535048c06fbda43aa8e996cf7bc9085.jpg20230316_171221.jpg.622097ae27277d518f3e26dac6523e01.jpg20230316_190436.jpg.eed896d10b04312480ecb825f831344c.jpg

Hi RichK!

Sounds like you would have another go at it then?  I don't recall what number hole it is and I don't know the distance from the white tees but that one par 3 is about 250yds from the back tees and always seems to be dead into the wind so it's plays more like 270+.  To add further fury to the hole, the green is super tiny and crazy sloped!  Downhill putts there can go off the green with ease so making par there is a brutal challenge and feels like an eagle most days!

Hope you enjoyed it!  In the summer I hear they have a special where you can play 36 holes with cart for a very reasonable fee to make a good day of golf and food is decent I've heard as well for the meal in between rounds.
