  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

Had typically played 1-3 times a summer since after college until March of 2020 when I started to play more frequently. Currently at a 20 and hoping for drastic improvements with lessons.

  1. What do you love about golf?

Friends, sunshine, ball striking, and equipment in no particular order. I’m a tinkerer and have already re-gripped clubs and built a putter(new insert, shaft, etc).

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

    • I do not remember starting to play golf, so that would put me at almost 25 years of playing.

    • My handicap is in the 2-3 range.

  2. What do you love about golf?

    • I enjoy the vast differences that this game provides. No one course is the same. No one round is the same. You can play the same hole over and over again and it never be the same. I also love the challenge that the game provides. Finally, I love how relatable golf is to life.

  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

    • I'm not exactly sure how I found MyGolfSpy, but I have seen reviews and forums that I enjoy on here for a while now. I decided to join just because I love golf. That's it, I do not know any other spies.

  4. Where are you from? What is your home course?

    • I am from a small town just outside of Charleston, WV.

    • My golf time is spent pretty evenly between Esquire Golf Course and Riverside Golf Course.

  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

    • The best thing about golf in my area are the golfers. The majority of golfers play because they love it; therefore, they take care of the courses they play and they play with passion.

    • The worst thing right now about golf in my area is that there are few public courses near me. The closest course to me is 30 minutes away. It's a great layout, but it is a county-owned course. Sadly, they don't put the care into it that they should.

  6. What do you do for a living?

    • I am a youth pastor at my local Bible-believing baptist church.

  7. How’d you pick your user name?

    • I picked it because I am the least creative person that I know!

Ben Hogan bandwagon

Hello, I am glad that I found this site!  I am a 64 year-old recent retiree, and have just gotten back to the game this year after a 15+ year layoff (business travel, back, hip and knee issues).  I have what I consider to be the ultimate retired guy's job, working at one of the Fort Wayne municipal courses as Karl the Greenskeeper, without the C4.

It was sure a shock to learn that I am not immune to the loss of 20+ yards off the tee; I thought that was only true for the old guys!  I've taken some lessons and have been diagnosed with that rarest of golfers' diseases, early extension; working on that with some drills and exercises this winter.

I actually don't have any scoring goals for the near future, I just want to get back to striking the ball well.  One thing that I learned about myself 20 years ago or so was that my scores began to magically improve when I stopped judging my enjoyment of a given round inversely on how many strokes I made that day.  Mowing greens before sunrise and then seeing the sun come up on the emerald stripes my mower seems to be painting on the dew-covered greens is sublime.  Life is good!

Hey guys. I’ve been playing golf for 30 years and have gotten down to a 7.4 handicap. I love just trying to work and get better at the game and it’s a fun and competitive outlet that you don’t have after you graduate from competitive sports. I came over to mygolfspy because I follow their ratings religiously and wanted to get in on the act. One thing I’m somewhat obsessed over is when personal launch monitors under $1000 becomes a thing. Any insights on that question and how far our phones are in that task is interesting to me.

You may want to take a look at the mevo +. It has a spot for being a personal launch monitor but also operating as a home simulator

  • 2 weeks later...

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? I have messed around with golf since I was probably 10. Never treated it too seriously. Had hand me down clubs until college when I bought a set of Taylormade Burner Plus irons. Still had hand me down Burner driver and 3W until this year. I have played 30-50 rounds a year for the last 2-4 years now, but this year I finally became obsessed. Finally got a full bag fitting in the last couple months and can’t get enough.

  2. What do you love about golf? What’s not to love? Outdoors, you can take it as seriously or as lightly as you want, bond with your kids and friends and there is no end to the attempt to get better.

  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? I don’t know any spies. I am a meticulous research obsessed consumer. I had a spreadsheet for carpet when we were remodeling our house. When I finally made the leap for frequent hobby to absolute love for the game, I dove headfirst into researching every aspect to get better. Independent, unbiased reports is a no-brainer for me.

  4. Where are you from? What is your home course? I am a born and raised West Virginian. Originally form Parkersburg and now living in Charleston with my wife and kids. Before this year, I wouldn’t claim a home course, but by default would be Edgewood Country Club

  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? The best thing about golf in my area is that no one takes it too seriously and that equates to everyone being able to enjoy the game. The worst parts are that even for the state capital, it is a golf-sparse area. There are only 4 courses in the county, 2 private, 2 munis. Which makes the munis almost unplayable due to being packed. The private courses are pretty decent for the area, but to play any truly nice courses, its 2 hours to the Greenbrier, 90 mins to Glade Springs. And the winters make it tough to play more than about Mid-March until Late October, but there are a few mild days in November and December.

  6. What do you do for a living? I am a solo practicing attorney, which makes it a little easier to make some afternoon rounds on the weekdays.

  7. How’d you pick your user name? Nothing original, I have been using the ashaff13 username since WVU assigned it to me for my college email. Creature of habit.

I am glad to be a part of the mygolfspy community and hope everyone stays safe out there!

This sounds similar to my story, when I started poking around golf forums 22+ years ago.

Be careful, though.  I now have 40-50 drivers, double digit iron sets, etc, and do my own club work.  It can be a bit of Alice's rabbit hole.  🙂

I'm down the rabbit hole!!!  Club work - Check, Drivers - not that many, but growing, Iron sets - Already my third set, Started the year with tommy armour 855s and some big bertha woods that I was using circa 1997.  Moved to some Adams Idea that I got at a second hand store, then onto some Ping G 15 white dots 1" long that I got off facebook market place.  End of the season, I went and got a proper fitting because I was enjoying it so much.

Hey ForeGlass and Camcmart!  If you happen to be in the Foster Park Golf Course neighborhood during the golf season, you might see me mowing greens or doing doughnuts in the rough on the zero turn!  But *not* molding C4 into the shape of squirrels nor gophers.  More's the pity.

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What's your handicap or normal score?
I have been playing golf off and on for 43 years. I say off and on because I had to stop playing for 14 years due to knee pain. Received a new knee and played 6 times last year. I play local courses around Marietta, and right now am happy shooting 80. I do not have an established handicap, but hope to join a club this year.

       2. What do you love about golf?

I was in the PGA apprentice program when I was 21, but could not survive the off season financially. Started a club repair business I ran for a few years, before getting married and giving professional golf up to go back to school. I have always regretted leaving golf, so now that I can play again, I am working to further my certification as an instructor in hopes that I may volunteer for a HS or College golf program. I love that golf is basically “deal with it, get over it, and move on.” I love it so much, I want to teach others to enjoy it as well.

       3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?
Being away from golf for 14 years means I am way behind the tech of it all. Heck I have 30 yr old shag balls. I bought my Titleist 975 driver back in 1998. I gave away my Big Bertha irons from the same era, and restarted with a 30 yr old set of blades (now shorter than current norms, w/ dynamic gold shafts) heads from Louisville Golf (back when I repaired and assembled clubs). So I am here at MyGolfSpy to learn what is available and what I should now know. I have learned a lot over the past 6 months, and as soon as the weather and a vaccine hit my arm, I’m getting fitted for a new set ... plus an ARRCOS system! Unfortunately, no, I don’t know anyone here.

      4. Where are you from? What's your home course?
Marietta, Ohio. I play Oxbow which was the first course I ever played and my first job at a golf course. I also play Lake Side and occasionally Marietta Country Club. All local.

      5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

Unfortunately all the courses I play have money issues so course quality is often poor ... no sand in traps, disease on greens, shabby fairways, etc.

      6. What do you do for a living?
I’m retired from computers, art, & publishing, and am looking to volunteer for any local school golf program. While I am a member of the USGTF and am certified by TPI, I do not pursue golf instruction. I had my chance ... let the younger instructors make a career from it.

      7. How’d you pick your user name?
          It’s my name..

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? I’ve been playing off and on since I was about 13, so 25+ years.  Haven’t played much the past few years, but I was shooting in the low 80’s then.

  2. What do you love about golf? I love being outside with family and friends.

  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?  I found the forum through online searches  It seemed like a group of knowledgeable folks.

  4. Where are you from? What is your home course?  SW Indiana.  I don’t have a home course, I play a few local courses.

  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? The long offseason and biting flies in the spring.

  6. What do you do for a living?  Bridge Engineer

  7. How’d you pick your user name? It’s just a random name.

Welcome from NE Ohio.

It's a great name. I've often said that if I'm going to suck, I might as well look good doing it!

Hey, everyone. I'm Jeremiah (Jer or JR for short). I'm from Grand Rapids, MI and I've been following MGS for a long time. I've worked in the golf biz for over 13 years (retail/e-commerce). Love the game, getting outside, and the toys that come with it. Just hate the long winters here in MI that keep us off the course.

Looking to just dive deeper into the forum conversations and meet other golfers like me.

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? I've been playing for about 4 years now, and have a 15 Handicap

  2. What do you love about golf? The challenge of always trying to get better

  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? I know one of my buddies is a Spy, and I come to the forum because I am an equipment junkie and a tinkerer

  4. Where are you from? What is your home course? I live in Cincinnati, Ohio and my "home course" is probably Eagles Nest in Loveland, OH.

  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? Best part is lots of hills and fun designs with that. Worst part is I feel like I've explored all the public courses I live close to already.

  6. What do you do for a living? I sell New Equipment for Otis Elevator

  7. How’d you pick your user name? Its matches my email address

MGS New Member Introduction: Midwest Region

Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia

Welcome to the MyGolfSpy forums! We’re always glad to have new members contributing to the best golf discussions on the internet.  If you’ve already created an introduction thread, feel free to re-introduce yourself here!

If you haven’t yet done so, take a moment to check out the Moral Codes that shape how we treat each other here.

You’ll find that this community is very welcoming to newcomers so come on in, take off your shoes, and get comfortable. Tell us all about yourself. To help us get to know you, here are some questions you might answer in your new member post. Feel free to share some fun pictures of your golfing ventures as well!

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

  2. What do you love about golf?

  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

  4. Where are you from? What is your home course?

  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

  6. What do you do for a living?

  7. How’d you pick your user name?

Hi all,

My name is Ryan. New to the forum and love seeing the enthusiasm for the game.

1. I've always had a set of clubs but I haven't played a whole lot until the last year or so. My handicap has come down quite significantly with the uptick in rounds played. Currently it sits right around 11.

2. I love golf because it gives me somewhere I can be competitive with myself. I was a swimmer in college and after I hung up the goggles I missed the high of competition. Golf has given me that once again and I can't stay away.

3. I stumbled across MyGolfSpy while looking for the new irons I purchased last year. It was immensely helpful and I am now a frequent reader. I do not know any other spies.

4. I am originally from Hawaii. Went to college in Wisconsin. Lived in Florida then Texas and now Southern Illinois. I would consider my home course is the home of the Saluki's, Hickory Ridge Golf Center.

5. Best part would be the value. The courses are well maintained and you get a good bang for your buck. The worst part is winter.

6. Currently, I teach people how to fly as a Certified Flight Instructor. I am working on building hours to someday fly professionally at an airline or at a charter jet company.

7. It's an easy go to with my name.

Happy golfing!

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

I’ve played since I was a kid (29 now) became competitive in late high school and started playing junior tours before moving to low level collegiate golf. Around 21-22 I completely quit golf and just now started back up. Probably a 15-ish handicap at the moment but would like to get back to 2-3 where I played competitively.

What do you love about golf?

Golf is a sport that’s personally competitive. It’s easy to track your progress and play against yourself no matter what skill level you play at.

Where are you from? What is your home course?

I just joined the Urbana Country Club in Illinois, looking forward to making it my home course.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a human factors engineer. Basically, I design medical devices to prevent surgeons from making mistakes.

I’m happy to join the forum, if anyone would like to meet up for a round, let me know!

Hi, my name is Jarrod.

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

I have been playing on and off for about 20 years. I had a long streak during college and after where I couldn't afford to play. Have gotten back into it over the past 3-4 years and have taught my wife how to play (still a work in progress and we now are getting her propper lessons). Handicap = 16
  2. What do you love about golf?

Everything except for getting behind a group of 4 slow players that won't let you pass. If I had to pick a favorite thing it would be playing with family and friends or just being outside enjoying a nice day.
  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

I love golf and I love forums and equipment/tech so I've been a long time follower of MyGolfSpy so decided to finally join and introduce myself. I don't know any other spies.
  4. Where are you from? What is your home course?

Cleveland, Ohio. Home course is Columbia Hills CC.
  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

Best is that there are a lot of great courses in the area. Worst is that all the public courses are always so busy a round can take a long time. Thus why we joined a CC because pace of play is a lot better.
  6. What do you do for a living?

    Information Technology
  7. How’d you pick your user name?
