@Tyler86 You've got a lot of good courses west of the Metro. Chaska Town will be everyone's favorite, but its pricey. Same with Rush Creek. If you're looking for high quality courses, but not as expensive, Deer Run in Victoria, Pioneer Creek in Maple Plain, and Wild Marsh out in Buffalo are all great options. If you're willing to go south a bit, The Wilds is another fantastic option.

Give me a follow on Instagram @Landof10KGolf and you'll see pictures from many of those courses to judge for yourself.

Hahaha, yeah. I was asking where abouts in MN you reside.

That is the exact reason that I started playing earlier this year.  Welcome to the forums.  Best way to learn to play properly is to get lessons.  It'll save you a bunch of headaches.

That being said, I haven't had a lesson yet.  My learning so far has been through YouTube videos and trial and error.  I've spent time at the range.  After the outing I knew at work golfed so I asked a few people if they wanted to golf with me.  There are two people I work with in particular that are pretty good, so I actually offered to pay for a round in exchange for tips and advice while we played.

That's awesome. Thanks for the welcome.
I ended up playing 2 rounds now on my own, after some time at the range. I was so nervous to go out on my own, but I got paired up with a group and it was a blast

... I would highly recommend starting with a lesson to understand the basics before bad habits get a foothold. Many that first start golf look at it logically and golf just isn't logical. It is common sense to think the face of the club should stay square to the ball and the target line instead of rotating open. This can put almost everything in a bad position in your backswing and again, allow bad habits. Hitting down to make the ball go up is just counter intuitive.

... So even if you are not interested in series of lessons, getting started with at least one lesson is always a very good idea.

Thanks for the advice. There are so many options for lessons, any suggestions? There are the indoor places like GolfTec, or Club Champion; there is PGA superstore, and there are some golf courses near me that offer classes. But I feel like everyone is trying to sell me equipment, not teach me.

... I moved from Chicago a year ago but I would suggest never taking indoor lessons unless I had worked with an instructor outdoors first. Some teach from a warm shed and hit balls into a range. Actually seeing your ball flight is a very valuable training aid. I would try finding instructors on YELP and see what pops up. For an absolute beginner talking a group class isn't a bad idea to learn the basics but beyond that I would highly suggest individual instruction. Good luck!

Hello! Glad to be here. A little bit about me....

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

I have been playing golf for 39 years. Started when I was 8 and was hooked. HCP is around a 4 index and my average this year is around 78.

What do you love about golf?

I appreciate the challenges it presents, the architecture of the classic designs as well as my time spent on the course while playing. Nothing better than pulling off the shot you envision and hitting it right on the button.

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

I'm here after reading some of the great reviews on Maltby equipment. I like to tinker and there are some great threads here. Plus, the demeanor here seems to be more polite than the other blog that I frequent.

Where are you from? What is your home course?

I'm from Milwaukee. Grew up playing the county courses, but have been a member at Meadowbrook CC in Racine for a couple of years.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

Best thing about golf here is the amount of courses that you have access to, as well as the quality of the courses. Worst thing is obviously the shortened season.

What do you do for a living?

I'm a software developer.

How’d you pick your user name?

Just wanted something a bit different. Angular is a popular framework for building single page web applications and something that I have been developing in for around 4 years.

Hello everyone, Just found MGS in the last month (I wish I had found it a few years ago haha).

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

I have been playing on and off for over 20 years. Started as a little kid with my parents. Got out of it during college and at the start of my work career, playing with a few friends on the big summer holidays. Over the last couple years I have gotten a little more serious about playing (playing 15-20 rounds a year, most being just 9 holes).

What do you love about golf?

I love the ability to get outside (great when Covid hit) and enjoy some company of friends. The fact that people of all skill levels can get together and have a fun round.

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

I found the podcast on YouTube and loved all of the data presented. So I had to checkout the website to see it in ore detail. I am an engineer in my profession, so being able to look at all the data and use that data to make informed decisions (about how to change my golf game) was perfect.

No I do not know any other spies.

Where are you from? What is your home course?

Metro Detroit area now, but grew up in northeast Michigan. In Detroit I don't really have a "home course right now", but up north there is a little 9-hole course that is right around the corner I play pretty often.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

Best would be, there are plenty of affordable courses nearby. Worst would be the 4-6 months of cold and snow that makes it impossible to play (although now there area  few places that have simulators, and I also got the wife to approve building a sim when we buy a new house).

What do you do for a living?

I am an engine calibrator for an automotive company.

How’d you pick your user name?

I honestly do not know. It has just been one of the few usernames I have used for years haha.

Hello there, decided to take the plunge and hopefully talk a little golf.   I live in Kenosha, WI and have a membership to the county courses here.  That allows me access to 3 eighteen hole tracks and a 9 holer.  I generally like to get out when the sun comes up and try to get in at least 60 rounds a year.    I'm 45 and have been playing for almost 40 of those years.  Been a walker for most of my days, but last year really took a toll on me and considering getting a pass with a cart this year and just walking occasionally.   I try to take a bucket list trip once a year.   This past year I played both Sand Valley courses the same day in the spring which was a pretty cool experience and also made it to Streamsong in FL for a round.    I am kind of a nerd for gear although I have finally cobbled a set together that I really like.  I am partial to Mizuno irons, Vokey wedges and Scotty putters.   Looking forward to hearing about other courses that people recommend, gear they are playing and maybe even meeting up for a round sometime if nearby.

Love Brighton Dale Links! Hard to find a tougher 9 than the Red Pines. I know most are partial to the White Birch layout, but I think I prefer the Blue Spruce. Either way, you can't go wrong!

It's been an enjoyable place to play over the years.  Usually play Blue on Saturday and White on Sunday.  Don't think I got out to the Red nine at all this year.   Made it over to Pets a handful of times which is kind of fun for a change of pace.  The greens out there are a bit ridiculous.    They had some kind of disease on the fairways two seasons ago and they made great strides this year getting those back.  Greens are always in pretty good shape other than fixing 3-4 ball marks on every green but that goes for almost every public course unfortunately.   For the price it is really tough to beat.  Usually done golfing by around 9am which is also tough to beat, and that is walking.  My guess is if I use a cart next year I'll be able to shave another 30 minutes off.  ha ha

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?
I've owned golf clubs for around 14 years, but it would be charitable to say that I've been inconsistent in playing during that time. I used to brag that I hit an 80 the first time I ever golfed, but then would point out that it was on a 9-hole par 3. Can't say I know my handicap or normal score at this point!

  2. What do you love about golf?
It doesn't destroy my knees like ice hockey goalie, and there seems to be an expectation for me to be terrible at the game anyways. Also, I love putting.

  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?
I was looking for some clubs to replace my cheap set from PlayItAgainSports circa 2016 and realized I have no business purchasing anything in the blind. I'm also a data fiend, so I'd love to document and share my progress as (hopefully) I play the game more regularly and buy new shiny toys.

  4. Where are you from? What is your home course?
Born and raised in Vegas, currently in the western suburbs of Chicago. No home course, unless top golf counts.

  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?
Best: When the weather permits, its great to get out in any of the many courses. Worst: Its winter for 6 months of the year.

  6. What do you do for a living?
    Cybersecurity for healthcare.

  7. How’d you pick your user name?
    Anagram of my name.

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?
I've been playing for over 30 years now. I don't keep an official handicap, but I can score anywhere from 75 to 95 depending on the course.

  2. What do you love about golf?
I am a golf fanatic, so pretty much everything.

  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?
I have been reading the MyGolfSpy most wanted reviews for years. I don't know how I haven't joined the forum until now.

  4. Where are you from? What is your home course?
I live in Salem IL. I play most of my golf at Colonial Golf Course in Sandoval IL.

  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?
Best: We have a fairly decent golfing season here. I can usually play from March till early November. Worst: I live in a rural area, so you have to travel to get to most golf courses.

  6. What do you do for a living?
    Manufacturing Engineering Tech.

  7. How’d you pick your user name?
I use to play a 9 hole par 36 course. I have used this name since I first signed up for ebay in 1999.

Greetings from Northern Illinois!

Sitting in my office watching it snow (I seriously hate northern Illinois) at the end of March really jonesing to get out on the course, figured I'd drop in and introduce myself.

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

Been playing golf for 25 years, but only really getting back into it in the last 3.  Played in High School, and got a round in once or twice a month while in college, but then had a kid and didn't get on the course for the better part of 15 years.  Also had a job in the service industry that was less than conducive to playing golf.  Top it off by adding that we moved and I didn't have any friends in the area that played, so finally getting back into it.  Currently an 8.7 handicap.  Hoping to get to a 5 this year.

What do you love about golf?

I love golf because it is one of the few games out there that it truly is you against yourself and the course.  It really is what you make of it.  You don't have to be the best athlete in order to shoot good scores.  And you really do get out of it what you are willing to put in.  There is something for everyone.

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

I just love seeing and hearing other people's thoughts and ideas on golf equipment.  Not just the paid advertisements you see all over tv, but real and unbiased opinions.  Granted, everyone has a different opinion, so sorting through and finding what works and what doesn't is tons of fun.

Where are you from? What is your home course?

Originally from Albuquerque, NM, but have lived in the Chicagoland area for 16 years now.  I really don't have a home course, and tend to play all over the place.  I think I play St. Andrews in West Chicago most often, but Schaumburg GC and Maple Medows are nice.  Did have a weekly tee time at Cog Hill back in the day, but haven't played there in years.  Just enjoy getting out and playing as much as possible.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

I don't really know about best except there are a ton of really nice courses.  The worst is not being able to play for 4-5 months out of the year.  That is something I really miss about the southwest and being able to play basically year round.

What do you do for a living?

I sell frozen potatoes.  That's where the name T8r Todd comes from.  Its the best job in the world

How’d you pick your user name?

I sell frozen potatoes.  Primarily French fries, but all varieties.

@T8r ToddHello from way down I-88 fellow Chicagolander. I agree that the past two weeks of cold AF or rainy AF is growing old, and we get the rain all next week too. I am ready for second winter to be over.

I grew up in Vegas so similar background of desert life coming to northern Illinois. The weather may be better back west (you don't have to shovel heat) but the people are much better out here and being able to see grass/trees/foliage sure is nice!

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? I was introduced by an old handicapped patient of my mom’s when I was 8 and have been hooked for 32 straight years. Arccos says I’m a 12.5. I’ve been as low as a 9 and high as a 17, all around injuries and a back surgery. Just played Harbor Town twice last weekend in VERY windy conditions and shot 91 and 89. I’ll take it.

  2. What do you love about golf? I love the feeling of a great swing and center strike of a driver, the pure feeling I get on a great strike on my Mizuno irons… I love that you can never walk away completely satisfied. There’s always something to improve, just like in life.

  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? I love golf equipment and research. I do not know any spies, yet.

  4. Where are you from? What is your home course? I live in the burbs on the east side of Columbus, OH. I’d consider Blacklick Woods my home course but I have a handful around me I play regularly.

  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? Best, diversity on the course. I love seeing people from every background and culture playing this game. Worst, despite having a lot of courses it’s still packed and hard to get a tee time, which has also driven up green fees.

  6. What do you do for a living? I’m an engineer for a clinical chemistry diagnostic company. Basically a mechanic for hospital lab equipment.

  7. How’d you pick your user name? It’s just my name. Boring.

Hello again golfing world

Many years ago I was active on the Delphi Forums GEA, then life happened and i stepped away from golf for about 15 years.

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

I used to be a 8.6 Handicap, after 15 years away I am lucky to break 90.  My goal is to get back to shooting in the 70's again.
  2. What do you love about golf?

It is a game for a lifetime.  I didn't really understand that until my son got me back in  the game in the fall of 2021.
  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

I love your reviews and no BS talk about golf on Youtube.  I don't know any other Spies but hope to end that shortly.
  4. Where are you from? What is your home course?

Madison, WI.  I don't have a home course, Our goal is to play around the state of WI and sample all the great courses we can on a budget.
  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

Best: The number of courses in WI that are both good and economical to play.  WORST:  The season is too short outdoors, and it competes with fishing & boating season.
  6. What do you do for a living?

I design heating and cooling systems for large commercial and industrial projects
  7. How’d you pick your user name?

All my clubs are custom fitted and built (by me).

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? - I really picked up golf when the pandemic hit and took away most other sports.  I used to struggle to break 100 but now my average score is around 88 and working to break 80 this year.

  2. What do you love about golf? - I’d say it’s a love/hate relationship but when you finally figure out what you’re doing wrong and hit that perfect shot it’s amazing.  Then you have the same shot on the next hole and a shank is inevitable.

  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? - I was in the market for new equipment and found MGS as an unbiased 3rd party and have really come to trust the content.

  4. Where are you from? What is your home course? - Columbus, OH and I wouldn’t say I have a home course.  Every course here is about 20 minutes away from me so I like to change up the scenery.

  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? - The worst things are that there are not many good public courses within the city limits and how weather makes the season fairly short.  The best thing is the affordability in relation to other regions.

  6. What do you do for a living? - I’m a project management consultant.

  7. How’d you pick your user name? - Short version of my last name and most people think it’s fun to say.

“You’re not good enough to get that mad” - my dad about the game of golf. Really calmed me down on the course ever since he said that (note: the comment wasn’t about my on course reactions but it still struck a chord that I feel most people can relate).

Hello from SE Michigan.  I'm retired and getting back into more regular play after a long absence and for a brief period I used to chase the ball around in scratch numbers.

I love to walk and carry my older equipment but father time is suggesting I look into a little help from an equipment upgrade and MGS has a reputation of having great equipment reviews.  So I'll be poking around several forums for reviews and playing insights.    Nice to be here.

Good hand action comes from good body action.
