Where are you from? What is your home course?

I'm from Central Arkansas.  Don't really have a home course.  The one I used to play the most closed down.  I've been trying out a few since.  I have a feeling Burns Park in North Little Rock will be the one I play the most.

Which course was your home course?  War Memorial or Hindman Park?

Been playing since 1989, so just over 30 years. My handicap is currently +2, was playing a great golf throughout mid 2019 until I had surgery in October. Current scores are 72-75 but I'm slowing bringing them back down now that I can practice and play again post surgery.

I love everything about golf. I enjoy playing with friends, competitive events, or even just being on the course by myself. The best challenge of the game is between myself and the what the golf course gives me. Trying to execute a particular shot in that moment is what brings ultimate satisfaction or frustration. I just love it!

I really enjoy the content the MGS brings to the sport. I didn't really know much about MGS until the golf ball report last year. Since then I have been keeping up with it regularly. I don't know any other Spies currently, but I'm sure I'll run across someone soon.

I'm from South Mississippi. I'm a retired Navy veteran so I've played all over the world. I'm back in South Mississippi now and my home course is currently Shell Landing Golf Course in Gautier, MS.

The best thing about golf in my region is the number of golf courses that are available. With the up rise in casinos in our area the last 15-20 years, it has produced some great golf courses like Fallen Oak, The Preserve, Grand Bear, and Shell Landing. But it has also lead to a decline of some wonderful long time courses that can't afford to stay open in our area as well. So courses I grew up playing on are no longer available or will be shutting down in the near future. So I really enjoy having new courses to challenge me, but I will miss the courses that I had that local knowledge of that gave me that little advantage over others.

Like I mentioned earlier, I'm a retired Navy Senior Chief that works as a government contractor. I work with Huntington Ingalls Shipyard as a logistics analyst for new construction ships. Shortly after I retired from the navy, I took a position as General Manager of Pascagoula Country Club. It is a small nine hole golf course in my hometown. I loved the job but needed to be more financially secure to support my family better.

I can't stand pull-hooking the golf ball, in my opinion it is the most penalizing shot in golf, nothing good comes from it!

I’ll be coming down there about once a month for work, so if you’re available after 5pm in the summer, I’ll reach out

hello everyone,

I just found this site while doing a little research.

1) I didn't start playing golf until my mid forties(I am 63 now). Then had a playing lapse thanks to a well known friend who went by the name of Katrina. So in Aug 2005 didn't play again until we started up again in 2019.

2)What I love about the game is the simplicity of all its challenges due to its complexity of staying consistent.

3) I happened here by accident while doing a little research. What I love about Golf Spy is that it doesn't try to change data to fit any guidelines. In reality this is the first of anyone that agrees with what I have learned myself while fixing my own clubs and  states toque is a very important component of club fitting.

4) I am from St.Bernard, east of New Orleans. Use to call Eastover in New Orleans East our home club. Katrina did it in.

5) The best about Golf in this region is you basically can get to play all year and the worst is due to crazy weather changes, the groundskeepers struggle to keep the courses up. Also many courses have struggled and closed with prices going way up.

6) I am self employed. got reasons for it but let's not look into my head. I have been there and its pretty scary.

7) I picked my name because since I started playing at a decent level of play, I learned how to put clubs together, I experimented with shafts; flexes and torque. No knock on anyone but when i started it was obvious that all things being equal hardly any golfers are equal, so how can different people all need the exact same shaft , torque and flex. I make adjustments and I fix it to do what I want.

Just getting back in the game and learning to enjoy life again.

  • How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

    • I was allowed to pull my granddaddy's Haig Ultras around the Evergreen Golf Course circa 1966 when we would visit Colorado every other summer.  No irrigation, oiled sand "greens", rubber mats for teeing grounds and at some point, an Astro Turf green on the first hole.  It's a bit different these days. 🤣  He was a teacher, and gently pounded Hogan's Five Lessons into me at an early age.  I play off a four, been as low as a one years ago.  Still have the Haigs. 😍

  • What do you love about golf?

    • I love being outdoors, in any sort of weather, taking the beauty.  I enjoy trying to decipher what the architect intended, what was already there and what was disturbed.  I love the history of the game and the honor it demands of us.  I love a scrappy muni track and a posh historic club equally.  I love playing against the course and wishing well for my opponent.

  • What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

    • I've enjoyed the unbiased reviews for many years.  I think I recognize a few. 😉

  • Where are you from? What is your home course?

    • Moved around the world all my life.  Lived in New Mexico for nearly twenty years and am currently transitioning to a full time RV life based out of South Dakota.  Spent many years in upstate & downstate New York.  Have played most of my recent golf out of Twin Warriors and Sandia Golf Clubs in the Albuquerque area.

  • What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

    • The southern Rockies are incredibly beautiful.  They are also very windy in the spring!

  • What do you do for a living?

    • I'm retired!

  • How’d you pick your user name?

    • I like Minions!  They don't dwell on negatives and stay in the moment!

It's been quite a few years since I have played in ABQ, but I've played most all of the courses (unless there are new ones of course).

The best course IMO is Paa-ko on the back side of Sandia mountain.  I also enjoyed UNM South near the airport.  Sandia GC is newer and nice.  There are some decent city courses, but they tend to be crowded and not as nice.

Twin Warriors and Santa Ana in Bernalillo are good; play at Santa Ana may be a little slow, at least it was when I was there.

Putting in ABQ was always my nemesis; putts break toward the Rio Grande.

If you venture up north a little towards Santa Fe, an inexpensive fun course is Cochiti; not a course to walk!!  At least I thought it was fun, except for the rattlesnake on the #18 cart path!

As I said, it's been awhile since I was there, so things may have changed.  I used to travel to ABQ for work and made a few friends in the area that played golf.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

I have been playing golf since I was six, but I took a long time off from the game after college and I have only recently got back in the game.  My handicap is 23 and I am usually around the century mark.
  2. What do you love about golf?

Hitting the shot that I envision in my head, competition, being in the outdoors.
  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

Just wanting to see unbiased equipment reviews.  I don't think I know any other spies.
  4. Where are you from? What is your home course?

I grew up in Beaumont, TX, live in Houston, and play Gus Wortham and Memorial Park most often.
  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

Year round play is good.  Heat is bad.  I wish there were more public golf options (I lived in Austin before I moved to Houston.)
  6. What do you do for a living?

I am an estimator/project manager for a paving company.
  7. How’d you pick your user name?

The General is my nickname from college and on other forums I am either The General or El General based on availability.

I am new to this forum, but have been reading MyGolfSpy articles for a while now.  With the COVID-19 lock-down I thought I would jump into the forum.

  • I first started the game at age 5.  My dad brought me a long to the course to "caddy" for him.  I got my first club and played with him the next weekend and was hooked.

  • I played competitively through my youth with enough success to earn a scholarship at the University of Arkansas (hence my username).  After graduating, I started working at IBM, got married and started a family.  With little time to practice, my game deteriorated and I got frustrated in my play.  The clubs went into the attic (I still have them). Fast forward 30 years and I am falling in love with the game again (the smell of fresh cut grass, playing with friends and family, chasing the sunset to squeeze nine more holes in, practicing with purpose and seeing the results).

  • After retiring from IBM, I started my own consulting firm allowing me to stay relevant, help others, and to have the flexibility to travel and chase my passions (competitive golf again).

  • New equipment was needed and I found MyGolfSpy's unbiased, data-driven reviews very valuable in sorting through the marketing claims to find my new set.

  • We have settled in Tulsa, Oklahoma and play at Oaks Country Club, a beautiful, but diabolical A.W. Tillinghast course that is the longest "short" course I have ever played.

  • Oklahoma is a golf crazed state with a surprising number of quality courses from many of the greatest architects: Tillinghast (Oaks CC, Tulsa CC), Maxwell (Southern Hills CC, Dornick Hills CC), Dye(Oak Tree) and Fazio (Golf Club of Oklahoma).  Oklahoma State and Oklahoma produce PGA Tour players in a constant flow. Oklahoma is also centrally located, making travel to play the Top 100 Golf Courses in the US (12 so far) feasible.

Hey guys!
My name is Alisa and I’m from Austin Texas!

  1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?
I “played” golf here in there through my childhood. My dad and uncle would take me to the range from time to time  I didn’t get seriously into golf until my freshman year of high school and I haven’t been able to put the clubs down since! I’m currently a scratch golfer trying to make it on the LPGA!

  2. What do you love about golf?
I love everything about the game! The challenge of every shot. You don’t always have the same shot each time. It’s always different, always a surprise. The ability to be able to test my game each time I go out is so much fun.

  3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?
I have heard about it through friends who play and told me to follow on Instagram. Since then I love reading up on the posts and getting other Spies input on things.

  4. Where are you from? What is your home course?
Born and raised in Austin Texas! My home course is Balcones Country Club where I teach as well.

  5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?
I love all the different courses in my region. Each course you play is different and allows you to work on different parts of your game. I just wish it didn’t get so hot in the summer!

  6. What do you do for a living?
I’m lucky enough to be around golf 24/7. I teach and play for a living!

  7. How’d you pick your user name?
I chose something super generic. I went with my first and last name with my favorite number 15! I grew up playing softball and it was my first love. I picked the number when I was 5 and wore it all the way though high school!
