Launch Monitors

Recommended Posts

Whats up guys?

I've been looking into getting a budget launch monitor for this season's range sessions -

I am really intrigued at the Mevo - but not too sure I want to lose those little metallic dots at the range every time I hit balls -

The other one is the new SC300 - I know the SC200 got really great reviews and the new one has some new features (and I assume cleaned up some of the issues)

They are relatively the same price which is cool - but I just wondering if anyone has a Mevo or heard much about the SC300 - I was hoping maybe MGS would do a review of it but it just came out.

Thanks guys,

I have the SC200. I believe the major advantages to the SC300 are launch angle and apex. It also has mobile app capabilities. Mr. Short Game on YouTube has been using one lately.

I really like the SC200 for what it is. Seems reasonably accurate. Range balls do tend to throw ball speed and carry off a little bit, but not by much. I haven't had the opportunity to hit too many regular balls, however, so I'll find out more about the ball speed and carry differences once the weather turns.

The SC300 and Mevo are in the same price range. Had I been willing to spend that much, I think I would have gone with the Mevo. The integrated video capabilities seem worth it to me. I have also heard that the spin numbers are still reasonably accurate without dots using the latest firmwares, but I have no actual experience to back that up.

EDIT: I should clarify, I don't think range balls throw off the SC200. I think range balls don't have reliable ball speed characteristics from ball-to-ball because of wear, age, etc.

No experience with the Mevo, but plenty with the SC200 and also with the ES-14.

On the SC200, I would add, at least for me the major advantage of the 300 over the 200 is being able to download info. Prior to purchasing my SC200, I had used a ES-14 (borrowed from my Club). I really like the ability of the ES-14 to download the data into excel. That way I could track improvements week over week.

Having said that I like the size and ease of use of the SC200 over the ES-14. I just take a pic of the average data on the range and archive them.

It'll be interesting to see how quickly you'll see discounted prices for the SC.

I was watching a bunch of reviews of the SC200 on YouTube yesterday, and it really has me intrigued.  For what it costs I'm really sitting here wondering why you wouldn't go for it and get one.  Seems like a no brainer to me, and could really help put real numbers on my club's distances, versus just the assumptions I've had all this time.  And the ability to take it on to the course, and use it in real time in a real round has strong appeal to me.  And it would seem that all I would need to do this would be an open course on a practice round with no one behind me.  I could spend a few extra minutes on a few holes and just let this thing do it's work and get true numbers to see exactly how far I truly hit my clubs.

I got one on eBay new for $200 (sc200). It’s good, useful for practice in the backyard, is reasonably accurate, and also works well on the course. Super quick setup. It struggles a bit in the long game but nothing crazy.

That's interesting - I never thought about using it on the course. That could have some benefits especially using your normal golf ball vs range balls. There are times I do play alone and no one else is in back of me - I'll definitely be taking it. great suggestion!

BTW with the intro of the 300 you might find the 200 even cheaper.

I’m close to pulling the trigger on the 200 but i would love to have the app capabilities and downloadable data you can get from the new one. That said I’m not sure 350 more is worth it for just that. Mevo is interesting as well.
I’m almost thinking about buying the 200 and also getting the rapsodo r motion for the game aspect. I’ve heard the r motion is fairly accurate in terms of showing draws/fades and then use the 200 for all actual data. Both would be 400 and to me that’s a pretty good set up. Down fall being you have to change the sensor on each club with the r motion.

Also, keep an eye on Amazon if you are interested in the SC200. I caught it on a Lightning deal for $190.

There were some questions on the SC300.  While I was doing most wanted testing Sam happened to be looking at the SC300.  Set it up while I was hitting 7 irons so we did some quick comparisons to the GC Quad.   hit about a dozen shots and results were generally 5-10 yards short of what the GC Quad was showing and height was off as well.   I am sure more testing would be needed,  but what I quickly saw wasn't that inspiring.

My local range lets you rent an SC100 for $5 when you buy a large bucket. It's the older model but I think it works well. I've noticed it doesn't pic up higher wedge shots as well as I would like but irons, driver and hybrids seems to show pretty well.

I've had the SC200 for a couple years now and it is a staple of my range seasons. I've definitely used it out on the course for fun too. For the price, I think it is really hard to beat. Just realize that you are getting a$200 monitor, not a $20000 one.

This is concerning, is this an issue with the SC200 as well or just the 300? Thats a big deal in terms of gapping your bag...Anyone who has a 200 having this problem?

I’ve had the 100 and messed with the 200. Imo the 200 was so so. For the price they are ok to use for probavky wedge practice and short irons. I would t try to gap my bag with them.

i probably wouldn’t test new woods on them even if comparing to my current driver

This is strictly a guess, but the past couple of times I went for testing they had the 200 an 300 next to the gcquad so they are probably doing some side by side comparisons to see how accurate they are.

The 200 works for me, however, keep in mind that I use it more as a 'trend indicator' rather than a more expensive LM that would be used in a fitting.

My primary use is around swing speed, ball speed and smash factor. What I'm looking for in my practice sessions is the level of improvement. Using SS as an example if I start out at 76 and end up at 84 that's important for me to know as it shows progress. Is the 76 really 79 or 80 yeah that would be nice to know but less important for me. Keep in mind I'm looking for progress during a range session only.

I don't pay attention to carry or total distance on the 200 only because the balls at the driving range are pretty dead and nothing like the ones I game. However, one of the forum members suggested using it on the course (when no one is behind you) and I plan to do that. We have a couple of short par 3's and it'll be an interesting comparison to see 'total distance' on the 200 vs. actual distance. Unfortunately this exercise will have to wait until Ohio thaws out.

Would I like one with all the bells and whistles of course - but I do have to work within a budget and as I said before the 200 fits an immediate need.

In terms of gapping between clubs, it just depends on how consistent the numbers are across the board. However, I certainly wouldn't trust the distance stated for each individual club.

I am in the market for a launch monitor that costs in the $500 range.

The SC300 is intriguing because of the apex calculation.

I think gapping and practicing hitting a certain distance are the biggest uses for one of these.

I'd also like to take a look at the Garmin S80...

I have been using a MEVO for a bit over a year without putting the dots on and seem to get pretty good data. I have compared it to a TrackMan and while it is nowhere near as informative it gives pretty good basic results.

Hmm looks like MGS needs to do a review.

Arccos gives me my iron distances worked out from my on course data, so what I'm looking for is to get consistency on the range.

I'm looking to buy a launch monitor and going through the option for me sub £500 is my limit so Sky Trak is out this probably leads me to one of 3 or 4 options.

1. Mevo

2. SC200 or SC300

3. Gramin G80

My initial thoughts are for best functionality and stats including camera then Mevo is the best but I like the G80 mainly due to the versatility i.e it has an on course GPS as well.  I'm teched out at the moment on the course. I have Arccos 360, Skycaddie Touch and a Nikon cool shot. I've just sold my Shot Scope V2 but still have a Bushnell Ion watch and an old Garmin G10. Buying the G80 will let me move some of the other stuff on.

All input gratefully received.

is there a budget monitor that measure angle of attack ?

I don't think so. I think your best bet would be to find a place with a GC2 or Quad with HMT and rent it for an hour to see your AOA on each club. AOA is a fairly static measurement that won't change too much from day to day, so getting a measurement every now and then will give you a good way to track improvment/performance.

Has anyone tried using those silver sharpies and put a dot on the ball instead of the sticker? I'm curious if that would help the sticker situation on the MEVO

Also, I heard they added spin to the app on the SC300. But I need the Android capability. Waiting on that currently. I like the ability to just use the monitor if I want to and not rely on the app. So the SC300 currently has my slight advantage. But I've been recording my swing so it's neat to have that with the MEVO.

Primarily looking for gapping distances and practicing shots. Even if it's consistently short 5-10 yards. I can adapt that to the course. I'd occasionally use it on the course I think. Especially when I have the distance dialed in with the range finder.

One thing to consider with arccos is you get total distance and not carry distance. Total distance is going to vary from course to course and course/environmental conditions.

range balls aren’t going to give you near the consistency or performance as the balls you will use on the course.

what consistency issues on the range are you trying to accomplish and how does that differ from what you see on the course?

what/how are you planning to use a launch monitor

Not sure about your #1 and 3, but on the SC200, I would think it's primary utilization is on the range vs. course.  I have a SC200 and on a rare occasion I use it on the course when no one is behind me. The SC200 is a basic launch monitor that measures: SS, Ball Speed and Smash factor only. The 300 has a couple of additional measurement such as launch angle. The 300 also has a  download feature to capture the data. I use the 200 exclusively as a trend indicator for my SS.

If you're looking for a basic LM for range use vs. on course data you should also consider the ES-14.

Mainly on the range, I'm looking to try and get more consistency in my swing and increase my swing speed. And for my wedges specifically hone my carry distance.
