Help..I need a ruling over here

Today on the back nine..a fellow golfer tried to hit a shot from a rocky, sandy lie.  He hit the top of the ball with a 9 iron and in the process he let go of the club which flew 15 feet or so into a Cholla cactus.  Now this is no ordinary cactus.  It is about 10 feet tall and spreads out over an area roughly 30 feet by 40 feet.  The club disappeared into the morass.  The question on everyone's mind was how long could he search for the club..and could he replace it if he did not find it (we finally saw the club, but could not recover it).  Any rules gurus out there with some help?

Well, being that it's been on the cool side in AZ this winter, chances are you could safely search for the club without any buzz-kill's going off.  Not sure about any time limit rules but, if it we my PE2 9i, I'd spend whatever time and trimming necessary to locate/retrieve it.

The legalistic side of me says to mention you get 3 minutes to search for balls. The decent human being in me says you don’t leave a man when he’s lost a club. There isn’t any real ruling for this sorta thing that I’m aware of as far as time is concerned. If it’s me and were my clubs I’d find a way to get it back even if I’m tearing up that cactus. We don’t have those kind here in central Texas but the ones we get are all sorts of terrible, believe me I’ve fallen in them more than once. Me and a friend did dive in a deep water hazard once to reclaim a full bag of clubs a fella threw in but never fought cactus for it...

I'll just answer this by sharing my story from a one day tournament last summer.  I was about 14 holes into the round when I realized I had left my driver about 4 holes back.  We were teeing off and I just said to my playing companions that I had to go get my driver.  I didn't ask for permission, but I just apologized, took the cart and started my drive back to get my driver.  A group behind us had picked up my driver, and it took me about 10 minutes or more to get my driver, but that's a $400 club so if you want to DQ me from the tournament go ahead.

The end result was that I got my driver, caught back up with my group, and continued playing the round.  It pissed off the guy in the cart with me, but I didn't see him offering to help me replace a new driver, so that's on him.  There were no penalty strokes involved in this scenario, and everyone else seemed pretty understanding.

As for cactus and a lost iron.  I'd have just played on without the club, and bought a replacement at my next opportunity.  Not worth killing myself to lose a fight with a cactus.  That's too painful to even think about.

I’m not aware of a rule for time but my suggestion would be the same as the rule as searching for a ball and in this case with retrieval being difficult notify the pro shop and have them attempt retrieval and return club to you once they can retrieve it if possible

as for the round not able to replace not to mention this isn’t like the pros where they may have a backup that could bee brought out to them where would the other person get a replacement from during the round?

A player could get a a replacement club at the turn, if it was lost on the first nine.  However, under the new rules, you can't replace a club unless it was damaged by someone or something other than the player.  Even if damaged in the course of play, you cannot replace it.

How many amateurs have a spare club in the car? How many courses is the parking lot close enough to grab a club and not cause slow play?

Many, but not all.  I know i have a couple, a wedge and a driver.

Many but not all.  I walk thru the parking lot on my way from 9 to 10.

But it really doesn't matter if you're not allowed to replace a club.

Good news on the "lost" club.  The local superintendent came to the rescue the next day and used a piece of their gear to extract the club.  So, even though the player had to play without for just under half a round, at least he got the club back.

Do tell us more - that story sounds interesting.

My home course has a very large very deep water hazard off to the left of the 4th hole which happens to be the most difficult hole on the course. Anyway, a few summers back there was a fellah who had a bit too much to drink and one too many poor shots and decided he’d had enough so he chunks a brand new bag of Callaway gear and other assorted golf stuff off a 15 foot or so drop into the hazard below, no doubt scaring a few dozen turtles. Well I was out there practicing and saw where they had gone in so I called a friend of mine and after stopping back at my house to get rope and my swimsuit we proceeded to go “free diving” for golf clubs that evening. I won’t even try to count how many balls we found but it wasn’t till dark that we found the clubs and pulled them out. They’d been submerged for a few hours but other than soggy they were fine. My friend and I ended up selling them and splitting the money. In hindsight I’m surprised we didn’t get bit by rattlers, water moccasins or whatever else was in that thing but makes for a good story. I’ll get a picture of the spot this week when I go out there.

Unless it’s a tournament I think the rule of common sense applies. Give it the old college try for 3 to 5 then either move on or wave the group behind thru. We often try to apply PGA rules to amateur play when the variables are completely different. If this were to happen to JT I am sure a host of volunteers would be rooting around to lend a helping hand.

Can’t remember ever calling a three second lane violation while playing pick up ball back at Heathwood Park. As in basketball ball I believe street ball rules should apply in many situations on the links. This being one of them.

I agree, look for a few minutes and then move along.  don't take 20 minutes, slow down your own group, and everyone behind you on the golf course.  But I'm not sure what "PGA Rules" you're talking about.  If JT tosses a club in a pond, or even if it slips out of his hand accidentally and falls in the pond, he can't replace it with another club.  That's a USGA rule, and that's what the OP asked about.

PGA rules = rules of golf which is what snyonecplauing a handicap round is supposed to be following. Even with a gallery helping a player look for a ball they still only get the 3 mins from when they start their search.

an amateur can play by whatever rules they want just don’t score the round for handicap
