Ralph Maltby was a club builder who founded The Golfworks. I think they only recently started actually making clubs though? He wrote a bunch of books on club design and creating the Maltby Playability Factor (MPF) which designates an iron heads' category (players, GI, SGI) based on the key features of the design. It's pretty cool if you've never checked it out!

Maltby's first irons look liked they were released in 1999. Golfworks doesn't have quite the same release cycle as the major OEMs, they don't release new designs very often, and when they do they tend to stick around a long time. For example, the TE Forged irons were released in 2010 and are still available. They do make small tweaks to designs every once in a while, i.e the DBM Irons are the TE Forged with the diamonized black coating like my wedges.

@ncwoz, check out Golfworks' website. Great place for club supplies for re-gripping and such. You can also buy just club heads, shafts and grips or they have pre-chosen packages of grip, head and shaft that they will assemble for free to your specs. For $10 (I think), plus the cost of the individual components they will assemble whatever combination of grip, shaft and head that you like if you call their customer service line.

I had the two wedges built this spring for $120ish delivered. Much more affordable than larger OEM offerings, of course the downside is that I know of no one in our area that builds Maltby components. There is a guy in Ionia that works with Wishon (another component supplier), but for Maltby you're stuck guessing what might be right for you without a real fitting or demo session.

I ended up re-shafting the 54 degree wedge with a stiff shaft. Like the feel a lot more than previously, when it had the same regular flex Hi-Rev shaft that's in my 60 degree wedge.

I've been dropping my thoughts on these wedges specifically over in this thread:

Nice bag. That's crap that the badges kept falling off. I'm surprised they warrantied your clubs typically that is just cosmetic, and doesn't effect the playability of the club. Bravo to them for the customer service, and standing behind their product though.

They are quite thick badges and they seemed to effect both the acoustics and feel of the club. It was really disappointing to deal with it though. They used some sort of double-sided adhesive it appears and it does not like a ton of vibration. Range mats, especially.

Wilson was not going to replace the clubs originally because my initial set were demos I purchased secondhand from Diamond Tour Golf on eBay. I reached out to DTG (same owner as Hurricane Golf and Sub 70 Golf - Jason Hiland) and he put me in touch with his Wilson rep who sorted everything out.

Wilson first only replaced the two irons I had troubles with, but then the replacement irons had the same issue, so they replaced the entire set. I do not plan on hitting these off mats this winter just in case. I'm sure it will happen again. It's a shame because they are otherwise very nice irons.

This topic was due for an update. My bag has changed quite a bit this season. It currently looks like this:
IMG_31082019_173321_(800_x_1067_pixel).jpg.017ae867a333ce48baeb7e7829cff030.jpg
  • Driver: Callaway Epic Flash 10.5, turned to 9.5, weight in draw position. HZRDUS Yellow 6.0 with Golf Pride Yellow NDMC grip.
  • 3 Wood: Mizuno GT 180, turned to 16 degrees, weight in back. MRC Tensei White Stiff, Stock Mizuno/Golf Pride Tour Velvet
  • Irons (4-GW): Wilson C300, KBS Tour 90 Stiff, Stock Wilson/Lamkin Crossline
  • 54 Degree Wedge: Maltby M+ Series, Mid Sole, KBS Tour 610 Stiff, Lamkin Crossline
  • 60 Degree Wedge: Maltby M+ Series, Wide Sole, KBS Hi Rev 2.0 Regular, Lamkin Crossline Black
  • Putter: TaylorMade Spider Tour Red with Sightline, 33", Stock TM/SuperStroke Pistol GTR 1.0
  • Training Aid/Warm Up Club: SKLZ Gold Flex, 48"
Playing Snell MTB-X Optic Yellow as the ball of choice, though I have a dozen MTB Blacks I will probably be finishing out the season with.
Quite a bit of change at the top end of my bag this season. Obviously, the Epic Flash is new from the beginning (thanks, MGS!), and I've gone through three different shafts. This current combo is great for me. I had replaced the Cobra 3W with a Maltby hybrid/driving iron that I didn't get along with, so that's already been purchased and sold this season.
I purchased the Mizuno to use solely off of the tee. As my driving has improved this season, I was becoming too long for a few of the holes at my home course.
The irons were a warranty replacement (badges kept falling out of my original set) and during that replacement I had the shafts moved from regular to stiff.
What's next? I'm planning to get fit for some irons here in the next month or two, with the goal to either order or build a set over the winter for next season. That will bring about the need to probably modify my wedges a bit as well.

Bag looks great - I really like the Mizuno 3 wood. Looks like positive changes and I know the driver worked well for you given your review. What are you thinking with your wedges? Going with new Maltby's in different configurations or something altogether different?

Thanks! The 3 wood was a surprise for me. It did not score well in the MGS most wanted testing last year, but of the six or so I demoed I liked the feel of it the best. I don't plan on using it off the deck much; I was really only looking for another option off the tee. During my round yesterday I poked it out about 240 yards total and dead straight, so it's doing its job.

Wedges are going to depend on what I end up doing with my irons. If I keep similar gapping in a new set (or if I keep the C300s another season), I would be interested in going to a 52/56 setup in the same wedges. As it stands I have a hole in my gapping between 90-110 that kills me at my home course. Too much for a good 54, too short for a full C300 gap wedge, which I struggle to flight down accurately.

I've been practicing Utley's chipping and pitching techniques over the past month or so, and have gotten very comfortable around the green with my wedges. The 60 really throws it up there, though, and I'm pretty sure I could get similar results with a 56 degree.

Pretty nice stuff---- Wilson has always been a good company and back in the day their QC was second to none---- Believe it or not something like the badges coming off can affect the playability due to slight swing weight changes. I know some guys have had issues when they de badged some Callaway irons. A friend of mine on WRX actually de badged some Cally irons and is  pretty meticulous like I am. He came up with almost 2 grams on the badges and glue. Some players are more sensitive to small changes in feel and SW. So I know exactly where you are coming from. Diamond Tour I have done business with those guys for years and their customer service is second to none. We did business with them back when we had the golf shop and they were just getting started. Maltby----- I describe Ralph Maltby as sheer genius and they make some great products----- I actually was going to build me a set of the forged CB irons and I ended up on a couple of trade deals with the KZG irons and got on that wagon instead. Looks like you chose equipment well as far as quality and customer service

Yes, Jason over at Diamond Tour is the epitome of perfect customer service. I can't recommend Diamond Tour/Hurricane Golf/Sub 70 enough because of that.

I've always liked Mizuno fairway woods but they seem a bit underrated. 3 wood's are funny things - when you find a good one they are hard to get rid of. I've always like a smaller footprint in fairway woods and the two in my bag are both on the older side simply because I know what they will do. Having one that is straight and goes 240 is hard to beat.

What you are describing in your wedges is exactly why I went to 52/58 so many years ago. I felt like my gaps were too great and I could do everything I need to with 58 that I could with the 60. I'm interested in what you end up with - I read your review on your current wedges so I will be following along with what happens next. I need a new 58 but I'm hesitant to change. I've been sharpening my grooves since last year because I like the feel and performance of my current wedges but I know that won't last forever.

How are you getting along with that Mizzy 3-wood?  I've had my eye on that one for some time and would be interested to know if your thoughts.

Thanks in advance!

For the price I paid ($70 brand new in plastic), I'm extremely happy with it. Seems to be pretty forgiving off the tee. I have not tried it off the deck. It gets used for two specific tee shots on my home course. The Tensei White seems to suit my swing well.

I did just get it a few weeks ago, so I don't have much to offer on long-term outlook. It's not a club that I use a lot at the moment. Sorry I can't add more!

I'm sure it will happen again. It's a shame because they are otherwise very nice irons.

Well, I jinxed it. I flushed a 5-iron from the fairway during my Saturday evening round and felt the badge give away. Ball still traveled nicely (almost 200 yards), but the badge went flying somewhere in the rough. I couldn't find it.

I started a warranty claim with Wilson this morning, letting them know my displeasure that this is now the THIRD 5-iron with this exact same problem in eight months. We'll see what they say. I'm not getting my hopes up. Had I paid full retail price for these, I would be absolutely steaming.

Stored in conditioned space (they don't spend time in the trunk except to from range/course) and no soaking. Hand wiping only. That's the thing that gets me.

This set has no mat play, and I actually stopped using the 5-iron at the range in May because the badge looked to be loose. I clamped it for a few days and it held until now.

Appreciate the response.  I was able to pick one up in the same spec brand new for $84.00.  Figured I couldn't go wrong for the price, so I'm giving it a shot.  Will let you know how it works out for me.  Thanks again!

  • 2 months later...

Clubs needed some updating. There will be some other updates (bag, shoes, shot tracker, etc.) to add in a later post as well 😀. Hopefully set until spring! Probably still three months away from my first round of the 2020 season.

  • Driver: Callaway Epic Flash 10.5, turned to 9.5, weight in draw position. HZRDUS Yellow 6.0 with Golf Pride Yellow NDMC grip.
  • 3 Wood: Mizuno GT 180, turned to 16 degrees, weight in back. MRC Tensei White Stiff, Stock Mizuno/Golf Pride Tour Velvet
  • Irons (4-GW): Maltby PTM Chrome, KBS C-Taper Lite 110 Stiff, Red Star Sidewinder grips
  • 52/56/60 Degree Wedges: Custom Tempered DTG Inazone CNC Spin, Apollo Standard Stepless Stiff (soft-stepped), Black Star Sidewinder grips
  • Putter: TaylorMade Spider Tour Red with Sightline, 33", Stock TM/SuperStroke Pistol GTR 1.0

Looking back to my original post from early this year, nearly everything has changed. Only the putter remains (and I have not intention of changing it, at least, not right now 🤣).

Clubs needed some updating. There will be some other updates (bag, shoes, shot tracker, etc.) to add in a later post as well . Hopefully set until spring! Probably still three months away from my first round of the 2020 season.
  • Driver: Callaway Epic Flash 10.5, turned to 9.5, weight in draw position. HZRDUS Yellow 6.0 with Golf Pride Yellow NDMC grip.
  • 3 Wood: Mizuno GT 180, turned to 16 degrees, weight in back. MRC Tensei White Stiff, Stock Mizuno/Golf Pride Tour Velvet
  • Irons (4-GW): Maltby PTM Chrome, KBS C-Taper Lite 110 Stiff, Red Star Sidewinder grips
  • 52/56/60 Degree Wedges: Custom Tempered DTG Inazone CNC Spin, Apollo Standard Stepless Stiff (soft-stepped), Black Star Sidewinder grips
  • Putter: TaylorMade Spider Tour Red with Sightline, 33", Stock TM/SuperStroke Pistol GTR 1.0
Looking back to my original post from early this year, nearly everything has changed. Only the putter remains (and I have not intention of changing it, at least, not right now ).

Man those PTMs look slick! So clean and simple yet so Maltby/non-OEM! And that's what we love about them

the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

  • 6 months later...

Final bag update prior to #COBRACONNECT. I'm pretty happy with the current setup, minus some gapping issues at the bottom of the bag, where I should go 52/58 instead of 54/60.

That divot tool is something special! Where did you find that?

Looks like it will be a good backup bag for you after the Cobra gear arrives.

Anything you think will put up a fight against the Speedzone stuff?

Thanks! The divot tool is available from a Michigan-themed company called High Five Threads: https://www.highfivethreads.com/products/michigan-divot-tool

I'm guessing it's similar around Boston, but there are tons of Michigan-themed stores here that do t-shirts and other merchandise.

It'll be interesting to see how the Epic Flash stacks up to the SpeedZone. I'm not sure the rest of the clubs are in the same league. The SpeedZone irons intrigue me a lot because I'm getting to be a better ball striker with my irons and the Maltbys actually work pretty darn well at the moment. Will I trade presumably even more forgiveness for feel? I can tell exactly where I hit the face on the Maltbys.

Comparison of the PTM leading-edge relief and the Cobra soles are something I'm eager to keep an eye on as well. Currently love the turf interaction of the PTMs.

I need to check out the wedge grinds. I don't do well with sharp leading edges. These Maltbys have a nice soft leading edge, looks like maybe the Cobra versatile grind is what I'm going to want to match.

Really cool bag. Starting doing some research on the MMT shafts. Needless to say I’m intrigued. I love the modus tours I have but I will consider graphite when my body tells me it’s time.

Thank you! I've been through enough clubs and fittings over the past two years to know what I like and dislike in clubs now. One of the things I picked up from here is, "Why make golf harder than it needs to be?"

I really tried to analyze the weakest parts of my game and see how I could play better and think I've come up with a setup that will do that.

Thanks! That's probably the nicest comment I could get in a sea of other very cool WITB posts.

Callaway has the MMTs in this year's fitting cart. I encourage you to go hit one (I demoed an Apex Forged and the 95S shaft before buying the Sub70's). They feel amazing for my swing, and I love the dampening effect. I hit 150 balls today in 20ish degree weather off the mats and have zero wrist or elbow pain tonight.
