My Tip of the Day - 2

Recommended Posts

What’s your thoughts on trying to hit down?

I’ve seen a huge amount of people try to hit down on the ball and just ram the club in the ground behind the ball.

I try to remind myself of low point in the swing. But I cannot seem to get my dad to understand. He takes a divot the size of Texas.

I’m a picker to small divot player so finding my low point is easy, but when you hit down so steeply that you stick the club in the ground how do you explain the hitting down part?

Think low point? I need to get my dad from doing that and ruining his rounds.

Great drill. I like that better than my standby which was two tees spread 5” apart, 1’ in front of the ball with the goal of hitting it through the goal.

It also does a good job of encouraging solid impact. I like it.

... I have always though hitting down creates a similar problem to hitting up. True, there are shots that require it, but for a normal swing hitting down is problematic for most golfers. One of the keys to good golf is maintaining your posture and spine angle. So having a forward shaft lean and swinging straight through the ball while maintaining your posture and spine angle will cause the club head to hit the ball first then travel down to the low point several inches in front of the ball. YOU don't swing down, the CLUB HEAD travels down after contact. Imo steep is a recipe for fat shots.

... I would much rather see a player pick the ball cleanly, than hitting down on the ball. For many just brushing the grass will give them their cleanest strikes. Of course having a good shaft lean and taking a shallow to medium divot gives you the most consistent results but I learned everyone is simply not capable of doing that. The golf swing is all about trust. Just watch average players take a practice swing that looks smooth and rhythmic, then with a ball in front of them everything changes because they are now trying to make the ball do something, not just happen to be in the way of their swing. If you can learn to trust your swing and not care about the results, it is so much easier to make good contact.

Do you have a tip on finding the bottom of your swing?

... I have found most tips are not universal and player dependent. The few I give out in general I have found work for the vast majority of players suffering from those problems. So I don't really have a drill for low point unless I can see what you are doing and then recommend something we talk about together. Everyone processes information differently and the good instructors know how to say the same thing 10 different ways until it clicks with their students.

Ha! Took my wife to Top Golf today - was her first time hitting a golf ball in about 3 years.  She was topping her shots so I got up and explained to her that she's trying to scoop the ball up when she should be hitting down at the ball to make the ball go up.  She looked at me funny, so I just sat back down and continued drinking my mimosa.

Smart move.

BTW as a trained educator I know that you need to introduce the same material about 7 times before a student grasps the concept.

I’m anxious to try this drill - I have found that I’m hitting the ball great by trying to drive it straight so that squares with this tip. I’m also really working on keeping the club in front of me at all times.

I just wish I had more time to play. Precious little time in the next little while. But I will have time to practice.

You need to bring your dad out west to the desert.  Hitting down on our fairways on a summer afternoon will cure him!  It hurts!!

Haha. I bet. The course I worked at and he was a member at had many different personalities. Most of the spring and summer it was a bit soft, but August it would turn into a runway. Impossible to take a divot. Probably why I’m a sweeper to small divot guy. I really didn’t like the feeling of smashing into a parking lot. Funny how you ingrain that stuff and it’s hard to break. I’d rather play a firm course than a soupy one any day though.

Okay - hit balls on the range yesterday - this was an awesome drill and swing thought for fairway wood off the turf - I was hammering them! Great ball flight to.

Oh yeah, that's me... 😞

Working on it, getting better .. but it takes time and practice!

I may need to take a trip to Chi-town for a lesson - recently struggled with topping the tee shots but hitting beautiful like I never hit before 4Ws from the fairways and light rough!

On the tee I was reluctant to mid-round but started to incrementally change ball position or tee height. This may be part of my problem but subject, of course, to review with my pro.

That is a very good point. Another drill is to put a water bottle or towel a few inches behind the ball (8-10) and tell the person to hit the golf ball. Yes initially they will top the ball but once they figure out they need a somewhat downward blow they will make fantastic contact. It will help get rid of the scoop motion.

I tried the drill, started just imagining hitting the ball that was a foot in front. After a few swings I could start feeling it when I hit up or cane out if the swing a little. Definitely improved contact!

I later tried actually using a ball a foot in front and ended up hitting both balls. Kinda of surprises me.

Thanks for the tip!

... Being paired up with others is always fun. Played with a guy yesterday that kept topping the ball. I really wanted to give him some advice but I never do that unless I am asked. Finally on the back 9 he topped another 3 wood and exasperated he turned to me and spat out  "Why the %$#&* do I keep doing this!!!" I asked if he would like some advice and he said he hoped I would give him some advice but didn't wanna ask. Perfect! My tip was "NEVER hit up on the ball, even with a driver".  Many hear that the driver head should be traveling on an upward path when making contact and that is very true. But with proper tee height and ball position the club head is moving upward after reaching it's low point in the swing so there is no need for the player to attempt to make the head move upward.

... Here is my favorite drill for those topping or hitting the ball thin. Take another golf ball and place it 1 foot in front of the ball you are hitting. (For a driver tee a ball up 2 feet in front of your teed ball) Taking a full swing attempt to make your ball hit the ball 1 foot in front without your ball jumping over the ball in front of yours. Just take a normal, full swing but instead of hitting your ball up just hit it straight along the ground. The loft of the club will take care of the trajectory if you genuinely try and make your ball hit the ball in front. I think this is an excellent drill for fairway wood play off the ground as many attempt to lift their fairway woods, even doing so successfully from time to time but producing a low trajectory and/or often hitting the ball off the bottom of the face. For some, this will be the first time you make solid contact with a fairway wood and you will be surprised how high the ball will fly. My wife suffers from this occasionally because as an accountant it is just logical for her to hit up on the ball to make it go up. I will remind her to try and hit the imaginary ball 1 foot in front of her ball and she starts hitting it solid again. But I have been married 32 years so I know enough to rarely give her advice unless she asks LOL.

... If you suffer topped or thin shots or even inconsistent contact, try this drill and let me know how it works out for you.

That's good stuff Chi! This will be first on my list of drills to try when we dry out a bit. Thanks!

Thank you@chisag for this advice! I've spent the better part of last year working on making better contact with my irons and in doing so, my hybrids and fairways started getting away from me. I've had issues with topping the ball for the last few months and is gotten to the point that I just don't trust myself to take them out of the bag often.

So today, I went to the range with your advice on my mind. Instead of a ball, I found a broken tee and placed it two feet in front of the ball and focused on trying to get the ball to knock it out of the way. I did have about two bad shots, but once I was able to focus on my goal, I was striping them. I plan on really making this a priority for the next few weeks and trying to ingrain the feeling until it becomes more natural.

Thanks again!

@chisag, wanted to follow up on this tip. I have incorporated the thought of hitting the ball into a ball a foot or so in front of my actual ball into my preshot routine. The result has been much better contact and fewer toe strikes.

great tip again. One tip for fairway woods i heard that works well for me is to swing your 9-iron a few times before hitting a fairway wood. You want to hit your fairway wood like you hit an iron; stroke down. Seems to help me.

Definitely looking forward to trying this out next time I go to the range because I get the feeling it'll help out my overall ball striking. I posted another thread about my hated FW, and assuming I'm not swinging like a jerk I suspect this drill will make a difference particularly with FW and driver. I'm excited to give it a shot so we shall see!
