I now have 3 #3 hybrids and I can’t hit any of them consistently. Also an MG blade putter that’s nice, but not if you putt the way I do.

Back home and once I got the weights and loft dialed in, I was back to hitting it like I did at my fitting.  More to come later however one thing that I don't like about this driver, is it picks up a good bit of loose stuff off the ground. It was  wet and soggy at the course today and  from resting the driver head on the ground  caused grass etc. to gather in the tracks where the weights move.   Other than that, I enjoyed it very much today!!

A few years ago I had an obsession with Callaway. I bought the RAZR X irons and X2 Hot driver, odyssey blade putter, X Hot 3 wood, and a X Hot hybrid. All while playing the Supersoft. Turns out the irons and driver were SENIOR shafts and I swing around 90ish. After taking a long break from the game I have a custom set of clubs from Wilson, Cobra, PXG, Cleveland, and Tommy Armour.

I think my worst mistake was picking up some Diablo Edge irons for $30 and then selling them for 4x the price because I felt like they were *too* big. That was dumb because they were high and straight all day long.

Ok I won't lie ,the M5 was too much driver for this ole coot to hit consistent shots with.    I sold it today for $300.00 and shed a few tears in my prune juice.   I actually traded in some stuff when I bought it so my lost turned out to be clubs instead of cold cash however I had to buy them at some point.   🙄

It could make a happy camper out of the right golfer, just not me.   I'm hoping my friend who bought it will be happier than a buzzard on fresh road kill. 😉

Reminds me of when my wife's grandmother passed away. She was an avid golfer up to a few months before her passing. When we went through her golf bag, we found she had purchased a Hammer driver from the late night infomercial on the Golf Channel.

My mother-in-law still has the club. I should borrow it sometime this summer for some range fun.

So how has she adapted to being able to hit 450 yard drives? Has it made golf too easy for her or what?

Okay, while I was fitted for my current driver, I don't feel that I was properly fitted...but I went through with the purchase anyway. I think that it's really hard to find a good fitter, and I hate being fit in an indoor hitting bay, I just don't believe those numbers that come up on their screen. With all that said, I usually find myself choking down on the grip in order to make club shorter and stiffer. It's my dream to go to Canada and get a full bag fitting from Ian at TXG.

oh man, you are preaching to the choir.  Over the past few years I literally went through my entire golf bag, one club at a time, and replaced them with an upgrade.  I started with my irons, due to my old PING irons being non-conforming with the new groove rules (and I honestly don't even know if anyone would give a crap if I kept playing my old irons, as who checks someone's clubs even in local tournaments that pay nothing?)

Anyway, I go to Edwin Watts to get fitted for my irons, and man, a couple of years into it and I really have some major regrets in buying new irons this way.  I mean, when you go to Watts it almost feels like buying a used car, where the sales guy simply repeats back to you what you are saying, in a way that affirms your feelings and thoughts, and really offers little to no help in actually diagnosing the clubs and giving you honest feedback.  I think I clued in when the guy said, "man, you have such a great swing."  I should have turned around and said, "have you ever looked at my swing?  It's in the golf dictionary of how NOT to swing a club."

But I'm not a confrontational person, so we simply went through the process and I ended up ordering my current irons.  And unlike the rest of you Club Hos, once I buy something, I stick with it until I feel satisfied I got my moneys worth on it.  I figure that means my current PING G irons will remain in my bag until sometime in late 2025 when I have a weak moment in the winter and decide it's time to try something new and don't mind dropping another $625 or so on something else.

But yeah, the next time I am fitted it will be at some place like Club Champion in Orlando, where you hit a plethora of clubs with different shafts and they actually give you solid feedback and narrow down your selection to what actually works best for you.

To be totally honest, even having played this game for 45 years on and off, the amount of technology and specifications that go into golf clubs simply goes way over my head.  And frankly I think it's a miracle that I'm able to hit some of the clubs, even clubs that are in my bag to this day.  But I think I am one of those types of golfers who can mold his swing to the club, and not the other way around.  In other words, if the lie angle is off or shaft is just wrong, I can somehow figure out how to make that club work and adjust the swing to make it happen.

But I'm like Frank Sinatra in "My Way" where he sings...

Quote

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption

Last throwback for today - the worst mistake I have made I sadly have to say the Mizuno S23 wedges. Don't get me wrong they are a great wedge and have a lot of potential, but are just not good for my game or me. I was super excited for them and just found they have this really weak floaty shot that I don't get with other wedges. Whether that is a wet ball thing or something else I am not 100% sure but they are for sure staying out of the bag for the foreseeable future.

Rushing to buy a Stealth 2+ without a proper fitting because of a promotion they were running. The driver is fine but I’d much rather be fitted for a driver that’s mine opposed to a stealth 2+ with a shaft I thought would work well. Got the okay from my wife and was just excited to buy it….lol

The single worst buy that I regret…SIM2 driver…you wouldn’t believe how great it was on the range…on the course…brutal.  As if I were playing two completely different clubs.

The single worst sell that I regret…my 670 irons.  This was more sentimental than anything, I loved them dearly.

Two come to mind, about 40 years apart!

Back in the early 1980's, I was still using the Wilson Sam Snead starter set that I bought from a friend for $10 (with a bag) so I could play golf on the high school golf team.  It was time to buy some new irons.  It was early spring, still snow on the ground and a local retailer had a sale of McGregor blade irons on sale.  Thinking it was a good deal, I bought them without hitting them.  Mistake!  Turns out everything was wrong and didn't fit my game at all.  They actually lasted only two months (when the snow finally melted).

Fast forward 40 years.  I was intrigued with getting fit for a putter.  At the time I had a Brainstorm Happy Putter that was OK.  I made an appointment at a well known club fitting company that coincided with a trip we had planned back to Western New York.  I had to ship my putter shaft via the US mail because I couldn't carry it on a plane.  For those who don't know about the Happy Putter, you can easily adjust the loft, lie, shaft position and weights with a wrench.  It was great.  My hope was to tweak the putter to better fit my swing.  The fitter had a different agenda!  After getting my numbers on the SAM Puttlab, he declared it was all wrong for me and I ultimately pushed me to purchase a new Evnroll Outback putter.  At the time, it cost more than most what was in my bag!  When it arrived, the specifications were not even close to what we had discussed and agreed on.  So not only didn't I get the chance to optimize my Happy Putter (my bad) I didn't get the putter that I tried and was suppose to be fitted for me.  Given the fitter was 1600 miles away from me when I got my new putter, getting the situation rectified was a long and painful process that really didn't work out in the end.

Adams Tight Lies 5W it’s an upcharge Fujikura Fubuki shaft about 15 years ago.  Worked great on a warm day on the range at a Demo Day.  Couldn’t miss actually.  Dead straight with lots of carry.

Then got it and couldn’t hit it at all.  I think it might not have been spec’ed properly, but never really checked it.  Total waste of time and cash.

Best purchase ever made? It's a very short list, as I have not purchased any new clubs. They are all inherited or goodwill. I did buy a leftover new model gw and 60⁰ from rock bottom golf, but that was to round out the bag.  Best purchase of training aids has been my putting mat with return. Can't sleep? Putt! Need to kill 15 minutes? Putt! Wife nagging? Putt! 😆

Worst purchase is easy, I bought a pair of golf shoes on clearance at academy sports. Fit great and 2 minutes of walking was comfortable.   After my first round in them, my feet were blistered, toes rubbed through the insole, and I was miserable!

I cleaned them and donated them back to goodwill,  with the box and tags.

Just an old newbie golfer, trying to learn and improve 1 club at a time.

I got a TM Spyder Tour putter with AmEx points. Worst putter I’ve had. Lasted 1 season.

Before I found TXG and learned about fitting, I was “fit” at Golf Galaxy for a set of Callaway Rogue X irons with XP95 shafts. Lasted 1 year, and I hated them.

A couple years ago, I picked up a new set of Takomo 101 heads. I put in a set of DG120 S300 shafts, BB&F ferrules, and matching MCC+4 grips. The set looks great, but cost me more than they’re really worth. And I haven’t been super impressed with them either. I’ll end up pulling the shafts and selling them both separately, as I’ll likely get more for them apart than together.

For me it was buying a set of Nomad Radial Sole II irons from a guy at work. I had a set of yard sale irons and was looking to upgrade, and I needed to badly. The guy I bought them from was built like a barrel with forearms bigger around than my calves. They were stiff shafts and I couldn't hit them for the life of me. It took me years to be anywhere near confident with an iron in my hands after these.

Dang, I just realized this thread in now 4 year old... and see Jason has two mistakes 🤣.  I guess my biggest mistake was not insisting that I switch from steel to graphite shafts when I had my first ever fitting in Bozeman, MT, buying the G425's to replace my PE2's.  The fitter simply didn't have many non-steel options and the stock PING shafts did not fit me well.

I played the G425's/AWT shafts for about a year before my elbow and shoulder called me to the side one day and said "we're done... either switch to graphite shafts or start taking up bocce ball" 😆.

Did I mention earlier in the thread about my ex wife? I don't remember...

As far as switching to graphite shafts, I have some in my current set and love how easy they are in my body, they're definitely less abusive.

I havent made too many big mistakes with equipment.  At least nothing i wasn't able to backtrack from and put rhe previoua gamer back in play.  Like a couple Ping i hybrids a few years ago that on the range were controllable.  But in play they had a nasty habit of making left turns like a nascar driver.  I went back to the previous gamers after about 3 rounds and sold the Pings for a small loss.

I guess the purchase i regret the most is a pair of TW golf shoes.  They are the most unpadded, uncomfortable shoes i ever wore.  I still have them and if i am playing in super sloppy conditions i use them to save my better shoes.

Yes they are, and you are still pretty young.  Switch now and your joints will thank you later.

They have been great, working in the automotive industry beats the crap out of my shoulders, elbows, and hands so I don't need the extra abuse when I'm doing something I love.
