Maltby M+ Wedges

Recommended Posts

I received these wedges a few weeks ago from the Golfworks, and I thought I better post something since I had asked for opinions about them in another thread. I'll do my best to make this as real of a review as possible.

I ordered 54-degree mid-sole and 60-degree wide sole M+ Series wedges with regular shafts from Golfworks for my birthday. I have completely rebuilt my bag over the past few months. Prior to owning these wedges, I only played with a 50-degree gap wedge from my old iron set and a 56-degree Nike SV Tour wedge that was almost exclusively used for flop type shots.

The gap wedge in my Wilson C300 irons is 48 degrees, so these fit in six-degree increments from my irons.

These were part of what Golfworks calls "Club Paks," which are grips, shafts, ferrules and heads sold for cheaper than the individual component cost. They also come with free assembly if you so desire. I opted for free assembly as I don't have my golf workshop fully setup (or even stocked!) yet.

Golfworks offers three different sole widths (tour, mid, wide) from 50 degrees to 62 degrees in two degree increments. The packs offer a choice of regular or stiff shaft and undersize, standard, midsize or oversize grip.

The package I purchased included the wedge head, a KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 regular flex wedge shaft, ferrule and a standard Lamkin Crossline grip. Each package cost $52.99. For two wedges, with taxes and shipping, I paid $123.99 total, or about $62 each.

First, some pictures for those interested. Please note these pictures were taken after an indoor range session. The ball marks were not there when purchased!

Customer Service and Shipping

I placed the order in mid-January, requesting free assembly and the clubs to be assembled to +1/2" from the Golfworks standard. The C300s are +1/2" from standard Golfworks lengths as well, so by opting to make the wedges a little longer they fit into the C300 lengths.

Almost immediately I received a call from someone at Golfworks confirming I was requesting the clubs be built longer than their normal standard. I unfortunately missed this call and neglected to check my voicemail for more than a week. Whoops. Thankfully, within the next week someone else reached out to me and this time I caught the message.

After calling to confirm the length, I also received a follow up email confirming my build specs. On this email I was able to request the grip be placed logo up and the shaft label to be placed logo down. Once the order was released to the club builders, it took only a day or two for it to ship Priority Mail, and then just another two days to receive the clubs.

The clubs were securely packaged in transport and were received in perfect condition.

Build Quality

These seem to be built very well for the price. The heads look very finished. The black DBM finish Golfworks uses is very nice, and it is supposed to hold up much better than PVD. The grips were put on straight and the Crosslines feel as expected (the C300s come stock with Crosslines as well). Perhaps the only thing I could say is that the ferrules were not buffed to a perfectly smooth surface. Small gripe, I know.

Size / Shape / Etc.

I don't feel I am overly picky with wedges. The head shape seems traditional, not too big or small, and fits my eye fine. Black finish is matte and shouldn't cause any problems with glare.

I opted for the wide sole 60-degree wedge as an "easy to swing" option from the sand or close to the green. You cannot really open the 60-degree up because of the wide sole. Until I can get out on the course and actually play, I don't know how this will affect my use of this club. I do think it will be very nice from thick rough as the wider sole should help keep the club face from being grabbed too much.

The mid-sole 54-degree wedge has the perfect sole width for what I envision its use to be -- nearly full swing shots from the fairway. It feels more like my short irons than a "blade-y" wedge.

I would probably opt for the mid-sole on the 60-degree wedge if I could go back in time.

Feel / Playability

I got a chance to hit a few range balls two weekends ago. I don't particularly care for hitting wedges from mats, but I probably hit 10 balls or so with each club. As you may be able to see in the pictures, I had a few poor strikes and a few good ones.

The new grooves and milled face definitely shredded some cover off of the balls. I am still working on some swing changes, so there were some ugly hooks mixed in, but I was impressed with the ease of which the Hi-Revs launched and the stopping power. Using the 60-degree wedge I was able to get a ball to stay on the ice-covered 70-yard green, impressive to say the least.

I was also able to hit the 54-degree wedge consistent in the 70-100 yard range, which is my expected use case.

Because I ordered these +1/2", they come in a little heavier than standard specs. Based on my cheap Golfworks scale, they both are about at D6 swingweight. For comparison, my C300s are D2 across the set.

I won't be able to play outdoors for another few weeks at the earliest, but I am excited to get these into real action.

Final Thoughts (For now...)

I think these are an excellent value for $62, especially given the more expensive shaft option. They do have cheaper "pak" options with this head in the $40 range as well. I doubt there is a ton of reason to spend more on a wedge.

Golfworks also routinely runs a free shipping promotion on orders greater than $60, so you can save a couple more dollars by waiting for that as well.

My biggest concern at this point is whether the regular flex shafts were too soft of a choice, though I won't know for sure until I get out on the course.

I purchased a whole new set of irons and wedges from Giga Golf back in 2010, but only continue to use the wedges to this day. It’s definitely time for some new wedges, and with the majority of them going up in price, this sounds like it might be the way to go. Thanks for the review.

Glad I could help.

Also, off topic, but seeing your location begs the question, "Red or green?" (I spent a few years in ABQ not too long ago).

Great review--- Maltby makes great stuff--- I have done business with them for years. I continue to do business with them even though some of their prices are a little higher than others simply because of their outstanding customer service. Their tech department is second to none. I have built quite a few clubs from Maltby over the years for others and have hit their stuff some but have not really personally front line gamed it.

I think Maltby produces some great designs. There are several wedges and irons I think I'd be happy to play. I personally don't know of any professional/qualified fitters in my general area/state that work with Maltby. Mine doesn't as he's pretty much a Wishon house. But he should I'd think. I find the Maltby Playability Factor interesting as most irons for example have a MPF placing them in the Super Game Improvement or Ultra Game Improvement category. Even heads that appear to be blades or blade-ish cavity backs. Anyway... if they were available to me by way of a fitter I'd consider a few of them. I'm not a build your own guy.

Thanks, guys. I'm definitely pining over the Maltby PTM irons at the moment. Might have to get a set next winter. They look to be very forgiving and are also very attractive.

I was able to hit both wedges at the range again today. Very happy with the 54 degree, even had it ramped up to 110 yards a few times. Very easy to swing. Dispersion was pretty tight, consistent with my ball striking being somewhat better today:

psoJFLd.jpg

Not 100 percent sold on the 60 degree wedge yet. I'm thinking I may want to take 1/2" or so off of it. Despite it being the same weight, length and lie as the 54 degree, I seem to be struggling with a lot of right-to-left movement with it. It could very well be me being handsy with it as well. More practice is needed, that's for sure.

A 60* is a difficult club to hit if you do not practice it a lot and get a good feel with it. Since I do not play and practice like I used to when I played comp I dropped mine. I sorta went back to my roots so to speak when there was no such thing as a 60*.  I just carry a 47* PW and a 56* wedge. Since as a general rule I only carry 12 clubs. On certain courses here known to have sugary sand I will slip one of my 60* wedges in for greenside bunker shots. If I keep one in all the time my tendency is to try to hit shots I could pull off "back in the day". Also with me only carrying 2 wedges it makes decisions easier for me but that is just me

Thank you for the write-up @edingc

I have't had the opportunity to see or use a Maltby anything, but you have piqued my interest.  I will be interested to hear more of what you think about them on the course and how they are helping your score.

  • 4 weeks later...

Played my first round with these today. My earlier thoughts stand. I absolutely love the 54 degree. Very solid, used it everywhere from chipping to 75 yards today (had no need to go longer, though it can). Feels spectacular when struck well, especially paired with the Wilson Duo Soft I was playing today.

The 60 is, for lack of a better word, "meh." I hit a good 50 yard pitch with it today, but everything else (several attempts around the green) was not great.

I'll keep checking in as the season goes on.

I think the bounce is an important ingredient in how the 60* plays. I have an rtx 60 and an older ping eye 2 with a wide sole. The PE2 is much better in the sand and chipping for me.

Thanks for that. I game Cobra one lengths, but as I can't hit a metalwood to save myself, I just carry irons, so I've got space in my bag. Was thinking of grabbing a 60-something degree at standard length just for chipping around the greens. Was looking at Maltby.

So I realize that I'm a little late to this party.. but I will absolutely back up anything from Golfworks and Maltby!

I was very close to pulling the trigger on the same wedges last year but was chosen by MGS for the Bridgestone XW-1 wedge review so that pretty much wrapped up my needs for new wedges.

That said, I play the Maltby DBM's. You may have caught me geeking about them in other threads.. I do that at times. Had them built by Golfworks. I also opted for the "club pak". The really cool thing is that in the more premium  club packs, they didn't offer the shafts that I wanted (Nippon N.S. Pro 950GH) but because they were no difference in price to the KBS offered in one of the packs, they just worked up the same deal at no extra cost.. again speaking to their tremendous customer service! I was also able to request the grips that I liked (Pure Pro) ad just a slight upcharge from the Lamkins offered.

I did also have them build a hybrid that I absolutely love! It's the Ke4 Tour 3h (21*). I think it's since been replaced by a newer model. I just opted for the "house" club pack with the Maltby hybrid shaft and again opted for a black Pure pro grip. If hybrids are your jam, this thing is just superb. Feeling, sound, looks, playability are all there.

My entire Maltby set 3h, 4-GW.. cut to 7-GW +1/2" and 4-6 -1/2", built and bent to 2* upright.. with a free shipping promo cost me roughly $450. In my eyes this is a $1500 set of clubs so that's a value that is untouchable.

I pretty much live at PGATSS. I've hit just about everything on their shelves in the "players, forged, CB, blade" department. I'm yet to find anything that feels or plays better than my DBM's. Just as good.. yes but with a premium price tag to accompany them.

M.Parsons you mentioned Gigagolf. I played their TRX powerslot standard and tried their single length for a minute. While those were definitely decent for the price, I just feel that Gigagolf can't hold a candle to the quality, looks, and craftsmanship of the Maltbys.

Edingc you mentioned interest in the PTM's. Definitely consider them, the DBM's, and the MMB-17's. The new Ts-1 Forged also look really nice but they're a few bucks more.

I see you MattF!

He's actually one of the good golf brothers who helped me in my initial stages of researching Maltby gear. And I am forever grateful!

...those Maltby DBM's have been on my short list for a long time.... paired with the wedges here and that would be a sweet looking set that sounds like it would flat out perform.

Awesome stuff guys!  Thanks for the info - I've toyed around with golfworks for a while but never really considered them; sounds like they are very good.

Don't quote me but I believe you can call into Golfworks and order a single club to try them out. If you decide to buy the rest if the set, they'll deduct the price of the single club from the pack price.

I've talked to MGSRob about MGS doing a review of companies like Maltby, Wishon, kzg, etc just to help folks realize that there's more to golf than the brands we see on the TV. Hopefully something like that could be a possibility

I have 81 more holes and a lot of range balls on these now.

The 54 degree has become a weapon around the green. I've spent a lot of time practicing my chipping with this club and my pitching wedge. The 54 degree is awesome. I hit three chips within 3 feet during my 18 holes yesterday.

I can eek out 110 yards if needed from the 54 degree.

I have gotten a lot more comfortable with the 60 degree. During last week's round I stuck a 55-yard approach shot to within four feet for a birdie with it. I hit a decent 60-yard approach yesterday. Unfortunately, I also bladed it well over the green on No. 10 yesterday which started my back nine on a sour note.

The finish is wearing, but it turns more grey rather than wearing away. I'll clean up the clubs some and get some new pictures.

I've been playing with the 60 degree at my practice bunker and have gotten mixed results. They advertise it as an easy to swing club, but I've found while it gets the ball out of the bunker easily, I can actually end up getting too much ball and send it beyond my intended target. More practice needed.

I have the M+ in 52 (tour sole), 56 (mid sole) and 60 (mid sole).  They work very well for me on both full shots and around the green.  I like the "fuller" grind (think along the lines of the Vokey F grind) which I open just enough to hit some nice spinners.  I bought the Club Pak so the three wedges (even with upgraded grips) cost under $150 and they nailed the custom build.

Glad to hear you like the wedges, too. I think the mid sole is perfect. Jury is still out on the wide sole.

One thing is you have to practice with a 60 a lot to hit it well. Since I do not practice that much or play that much anymore I have taken my 60 out. Besides I am old school and can manipulate my 56 pretty well still

Wearing of DBM finishes on wedges came up over in the #COBRAConnect thread, so I thought I'd post a few updates on how these wedges are looking after several months of use this season.

The DBM finish is actually impregnated into the metal and wears to a gray-ish hue rather than to bare metal. The process has been accelerated some on my wedges because I've used a brass brush to help clean the grooves.

I've been impressed by the durability considering the 54 degree wedge is one of my most used clubs in the bag.

Good write-up.  I have the Maltby Tour Grind MG wedges, which I also bought as a pre-assembled pack with the KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 shaft.  I have the 56 and 60 wedges.  I agree that the DMB finish is excellent, and the assembly they did was good (not great), but adequate for the price (around $60/club).  While I'm somewhat happy with their performance, I am going to be trying the Hogan Equalizer in 56* over the next couple of weeks.  I have the Hogan PTxPro irons and a 50* Equalizer currently, and the 50 is a weapon, so I got the wedge demos (50 and 56) from Hogan just yesterday.  If the 56 works out I'm actually going to order a 56 and a 62*.   That being said, the Maltbys are truly quality wedges that I'd recommend to anyone to try for themselves.   Really can't go wrong at those prices.

I ended up re-shafting the 54 degree with a stiff KBS 610 Wedge shaft. The epoxy is curing as I type. I'm going to cut the shaft to 35.5" playing length (same as before) tomorrow and put it to the test on Friday at the range.

I really need the 54 degree to be a viable option from 80-110 yards. At my home course, I end up with tons of shots from this distance. The Hi Rev 2.0 is a great shaft, but I probably should have ordered the stiff flex. On full swings, it has either been ballooning and falling short of target, or hooking left of target. My Wilson C300 gap wedge is too much club for anything under 110-115 yards.

The 610 is KBS' most stout wedge shaft, so I'm hoping it lowers the ball flight a bit and helps me out on full swing shots.

I ordered the new shaft Monday, and ironically, during Tuesday morning's nine holes, I chipped in twice with the 54 degree. Like the shaft was trying to convince me to leave it alone...

I'm getting better with the 60 degree, but it's really more loft than I need with my swing. I tend to create a lot of dynamic loft, even on pitch shots, and the 60 really gets it up there. I'm going to continue to practice, but I wouldn't be surprised with myself if I ended up purchasing a 52 degree tour sole and 56 degree mid-sole M+ to replace both of these. They are fantastic heads, but I'm beginning to understand my gapping a whole lot better than what I did in January when I ordered them.

I noticed the first sign of face "damage" on the 54 when I popped the old shaft off. Looks like I caught a rock on the face and there is a small gash on one of the grooves. Otherwise they are looking good as new yet. The 54 degree has at least 15 rounds and a whole lot of range work on it. The DBM finish is legitimate.

Update on the shaft replacement - I made the right choice and the 54 degree is now nearly a perfect club in my opinion. Extremely versatile for my type of game.

I find myself grabbing the 54 degree in almost all situations from 100 and in at my home course. During this morning's round I had several great shots with it. The highlight was a 60-yard approach on No. 3, a par 5, where an errant 7-iron left me needing to get up-and-down from 60 yards out to save par.

The green on No. 3 slopes back-to-front, pin left middle, and I had a clean lie, so it was a perfect chance to play the low spinner I've developed since putting the KBS 610 shaft in. Pinched it cleanly, landed right on front edge of green and stopped about 8 inches right of the hole. Absolutely awesome shot for me.

On No. 9, I had 99 yards to the pin, went straight at it with a higher trajectory, and landed a yard or so left of it with very little roll out.

Despite the 610 being more stout, I love the feeling around the greens with chips as well. As I've practiced more hitting both high and low shots, I'm finding myself using the 54 almost exclusively, whereas earlier in the season I would work in a pitching wedge when I wanted to execute lower chips. I'm finding my distance control is vastly improved when using only one club around the green.

I'm hitting the 60 more often as well, but it's really a specialty club for me. Unless I'm in the sand or 40-60 yards out with no way to hit a low pitch, I favor using the 54 degree.

Great write up @edingc! Checked out their site and they've got some killer looking clubs...

How did you end up choosing these wedges if you weren't able to test em out? What was it that brought you to GolfWorks?

They really do have some great looking club heads.

I started with wedges since I doubt there is much of a difference between major OEMs and Maltby. A wedge is a relatively low tech club compared to drivers and irons, so I felt pretty safe starting there. From there, I looked at my irons and went in six degree increments from my C300 gap wedge. If I had to do it again, I would have gone 52/56 for four degree increments instead.

The biggest question for you is going to be the shaft. After some experimenting this summer, I'd say use the same shaft as what you play in your irons for a full-swing wedge. For partial swings, chipping, etc., the shaft probably is less important, but that's ultimately up to how you feel.

Of course, the $39.99 club pack only has a single shaft choice (True Temper Score LT), so if you're going solely based on cost, that's a consideration.

The DBM finish is great. Highly recommend it.

After a full season with the 54 58 in the mid sole I could not be happier with thier performance and fit to my game.
I had previously been playing the MG Tour grind and that's an aggressive head like a Vokey with its sharper leading edge. Great if you tightly clip the ball but unforgiving it you are heavy or fat.
With the mid sole grind I am really able to use the bounce more efficiently in a big variety of conditions. Also switching down from the 56, 60 to the 54, 58 alone made a huge difference in comfort level. The forgiveness between a 58 and a 60 is quite noteworthy. The midsole on the M+ is also not so big that I cant lay the wedge open to hit a big flop shot if ever needed.
A few guys wondering about the DBM finish should know that other than the slight graying of the club they show zero signs of bag chatter the way a chromed wedge will. Huge fan of this finish.
For the club pack price this club is a no brainer. You can buy 3 wedges for the price of 1 OEM.

I have found that I get the most out of a 60* wedge when it has more of a low bounce, Derek l heel and the relief, and a thin sole.

The Maltby wide M+ 60* kinda forces a square face with a descending blow to eliminate the dreaded skull. This effectively turns it into a 58* or even 56* dynamic loft.

I play the Tour 60* Maltby wedge which gives me many more options of open face, knipping it from tight lies, and even vertical shaft at impact for true lofted shots.

I keep a high bounce Sand and look low bounce lob to give me more options. My sand is the Maltby M+ Tour 54* - seems almost like a Vokey F grind.

I have 3 or 4 lob wedges that I tried to compare chipping when I landed in the conclusion I have more control with the low bounce, C grind 60* than higher bounce or wider soles. The shots I hit on the chipping green were consistently closer to the hole.

I did have to adjust my setup to just have the club behind the ball to make the cleanest contact with my 60*. Otherwise, I had the potential of hitting it too high on the face. Recognizing the reduced bounce changed impact position was the key to dialing it in for me.

My higher bounce could do the reverse so I just make sure I keep down through impact to keep the bounce below the ball and about the dreaded skull.

I have to agree with you on the versatility of the MG Tour series. But that leading edge and low bounce is a diggers nightmare. My Fault!!
I just upgraded my 54, 58 M+ mid to the 52 M+ Tour and 56 M+ Mid. The previous two were not matched up well to the PTM irons and past the second year anyways. The M+ tour still offers a good amount of bounce and a wider sole than the MG Tour. I learned to keep thing very simple with wedges and greatly increase my chance of success.
I did enjoy the MG Tour in really nice turf conditions though. But again I rarely play on elite courses these days.
Its funny how variables with the sole so greatly effect how the wedge plays. Ill take the added help.

I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on a 52/56 M+ combo as well. You are right about that fitting better in with the gapping of the PTMs.

I went crazy buying Maltby Wedges because I couldn't believe you could get custom specs for such a deal.

I was on a graphite kick so I bought the full set of 52*/56*/60* Tour grind MG wedges with the Paderson Graphite Reg Wedge shafts. They were, at the time, a little above my level. I was a bit over zealous in my ability at play that sole in all my lofted wedges.

I learned my lesson and when I went to game improvement irons, my gaps didn't match anymore. Also, my swing speed increased to S flex. So, I wanted to get another set of Maltby Wedges in the 50*/54*/58* lofts. They were out of stock on the 50* M+ so I picked the DBM gap wedge, M+ 54* Tour and M+ 58* mid all with the Stiff Paderson shafts.

Part of my wedge journey included a time where I gamed Wilson Harmonized wedges that only cost $27/each new from Amazon in 52*/56*/60*. But I soon learned that low bounce gap wedges and me didn't get along. I would hit the ball high in the face and never get good performance/spin.

I learned that I was having trouble with the Gap wedge in both the DBM, Wilson, and 52* MG so I ended up getting the U wedge from my iron set. But I gamed the 54* and 58* M+ wedges for months - loved them. Eventually, I got the set sand and Lob wedges but learned my Maltby Wedges were a better fit for accuracy and versatility.

Then there came a time when the 58* M+ with that wider sole was giving me problems with tight lies. That's what led to me comparing the 4 lob wedges and landed on the 60* MG Tour Grind. The funny thing is that it is actually reg flex which is perfect since I 90% of the time swing partially with the lob wedge.

I still bring back the 58* M+ when I play spongy courses with very soft, fluffy bunkers. It is a wonderful club to not take too much sand and get some tour sauce on a bunker shot. The mid sole is perfect for spongy Kikuya and softer ground.
