Surprisingly inspired by an online instructor

Recommended Posts

I have recently discovered Mike Bender on Instagram. For the first time, I have found an instructor who speaks a language I truly understand.

If any of you have not I would say check him out.

For others who are familiar, what online instructors do you pay close attention to for your game?

  • Titleist TSi3 Fujikura Speeder NX Blue 60X

I was debating about whether or not to put a thread about him, I have recently checked him out as well and found him great. Lots of drills with specific purpose and he is great about interacting with people who leave comments looking for more help. I do love the way he breaks things down, an excellent teacher.

I have found Chris Ryan's stuff to be pretty good as well. I used to be into Me and My Golf but I find they progress too quickly through things and they are more interested in promoting themselves and their products (which is fair, it's a business). I also really enjoy when Mark Crossfield does Q and A's on instagram.

It’s nice to see relevant information that’s explained in clear terms. A lot of instructors talk and talk and talk and use 50 words when 10 will do.

Crossfield is a nice page to find. He clearly loves his job.

I’m the type of golfer who will look anywhere and from anyone for a tip to play this game better. I’ve recently been watching Russell Heritage on you tube. Really enjoy his lessons. Very easy to understand. Thanks for the Mike Bender tip. I’ll take a look at him.

I wouldn't say that I take lessons online but I do watch a few youtube vids from time to time. And occasionally I'll pick-up a tip that I like that seem to make sense to me. Two that come to mind are Shawn Clements and Clay Ballard.

I personally feel like Mike Bender might be the best golf instruction Instagram account around. Some of his methods are certainly different than many of the new instructors touting opening up, wrist angles and rotation. From what I have read he strives to teach the most efficient swing possible and he does a darn good job at it!!

I’ve been “Benderized” as well, and in another week or so I’m going to send-in a video and do an online lesson. I’ve adopted just a few of his teachings and I immediately got rid of my flipping, and exaggerated in-to-out swing. What he teaches is legit, and so easy to learn. Great follow!!!

This right here speaks to me. I am having so much trouble keeping my hands ahead of the club on my longer irons.

Bender consistently shares videos that enforce this behavior and help repair it.

What set him apart was how clearly and efficiently he translates this language.

He has hundreds of videos on his page. He’s teaching something EVERY SINGLE DAY. Drills, explanations, etc. All are meant for one person he’s teaching at the moment, but there’s always something he goes over that can apply to what one knows is wrong with their swing, copy the drill/move, and adapt it. It’s unreal.

Garage practice set-up. Bender is big on feedback negative or positive when making a swing change. My favorite drill station to help me hit push draws. Cone set on toe line to promote hands in club head out on backswing. Impact bag set up so club path goes in to out slightly.IMG_0443.thumb.jpg.d8472441d1a9070293f2ecc9e26ed2f6.jpg

Bender is very good.

I personally also enjoy following these guys on youtube among others:

Mike Malaska (so interesting whether or not I would use it all or not)

Maria Palozola (beyond underrated for simple stuff that works)

Van Phillips

Tony Luczak

Golf with Aimee - I think she is teaching golf - I might watch if she was just describing paper towels also!

MeandMyGolf - these guys put up so much content and it keeps getting better

and most recently......

Tyler Ferrell of golfsmartacademy.com - so thorough with concise vids for drills, concepts and feels.

A few I personally have viewed but now avoid for various reasons although I'm sure they have good stuff that can benefit some, I personally just do not either agree it is for mass consumption or enjoy the way they deliver their message:

Clay Ballard (I think he was initially asking you to subscribe to his pay service to get the point of any video, though that may have changed),

Shawn Clement (just don't think most golfers would be able to parse out the good from the bad in his overall lineup of advice),

Peter Finch - just not interesting to me.

Gravity Golf, those guys may have a method, but just too far from the standard range of accepted fundamentals for my taste.

I've started following James Jordan on IG and plan to do an online lesson with him as soon as the weather stabilizes enough for me to get the videos he needs. The price is a bit steep ($200) compared to a lesson at my golf course ($80), but seeing what he's done with some of his students gives me confidence he can help my game significantly. I like my pro and will continue to do lessons with him in the future, but something's not clicking at the moment and I need to see if someone can speak my language a bit better or something and get the light bulb to turn on.

Yes, he sent the feedback to the wrong account! He’s at the Masters, so now I wait until he gets back and re-send the video.
Watch his videos on the release/wrists, it’s mainly about turning the knuckles down as you come into impact. It’s not exactly that as he teaches firing at the ball, wrists pronates, but they hold after firing. Hard to describe.
Go to his page on Instagram and find this post, it’s around the fifth one. Click on it and watch it. It will teach you what he wants with the wrists

Mike Bender is mentioned in this article : How to Hit the Ball Straight- The Essential Elements'

http://perfectgolfswingreview.net/straight.htm

The article is based on TGM stuff and it seems that Mike Bender understands that the golfer needs to swing on the 'functional plane' . To ensure you are swinging on the functional plane , your clubshaft needs to 'trace' the 'Swing Plane Line'.

More details that offer free chapters on TGM  theory (obviously it is claimed to be outdated now because of high speed cameras and 3D Tech) can be found here if you are interested in learning more.

Imho , click on the following chapters  that first 'opened my eyes' regarding basic mechanics involved in the golf swing .

'The Power Package'

'Essentials'

'Imperatives'

Note: The author of that first link above is Dr Jeff Mann and it's an old article . He has now updated his opinions and no longer believes in certain TGM concepts (ie. He doesn't believe in  PA3 being a Power Accumulator  or Homer Kelley's concept of  Horizontal/Diagonal/Vertical Hinging with the lead arm).

I have recently discovered Mike Bender on Instagram. For the first time, I have found an instructor who speaks a language I truly understand.

If any of you have not I would say check him out.

For others who are familiar, what online instructors do you pay close attention to for your game?

Mike Bender is awesome!  I have his book and all the necessary training aids to set up all the practice stations that he recommends. My instructor works with Mike Bender and teaches his method. Many ways to swing a club but I got Benderized 18 years ago and my game went from Hacker City to being a respectable golfer.

I 'think'  Mike Bender advocates something called a 'Reactive' pivot. He advocates the intended movement of the arms/hands to accelerate the clubhead , while the body reacts to that intended movement. That means although the body is actually moving 'out of the way' to allow the arms/hand/clubshaft to be moved , the body pivot is not actively being used to propel the arms.

Is that a correct assumption of his golfing philosophy?

I’m not sure specifically, but I would agree with that. There is no “pulling the club with the body”, or “dragging the handle”, he notes the inefficiency in that, and how it can’t be faster than the hands and arms.

Wildthing,

i am not sure if that is how he classifies the pivot or not. The intention is to feel as though your arms start the downswing. Once the club is parallel to the ground then I feel as though I am firing my hips as hard as I can. I am not an instructor and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn so my description may be way off base.   All I know is that it works. I believe Mike trained under Mac O’Grady so I believe there is some influence from him.
