Frozen Shoulder - What did you do and did it work

Peaksy68

Recommended Posts

I'm currently suffering from a "frozen" shoulder. So far I've had a Cortisone injection that gave a bit of pain relief, but no improvement in range of movement. I had a hydrodilatation 3 weeks ago with similar slight improvement in pain (especially at night) and a small improvement in range of movement. Unfortunately, I need to lift my arm above my head for work and my golf this year has been restricted to putting and very short chipping practice.

My next options

1. A manipulation under anaesthetic, which basically is wrenching the shoulder around until it breaks the joint capsule contraction down. Personally I don't love the sound of that!

2. Arthroscopic surgery to realease the contraction

3. Arterial embolization of the shoulder. This is a very new technique which involves shutting off the arteries that form around joints with injury. I assume no one here would have had this done as its only in its infancy, but would love to hear from anyone if they have

4. Do nothing and hope it gets better by itself. This probably isn't an option, as it may take years and may not get better.

If anyone has had anything done to fix a frozen shoulder I'd love to hear about your experience (both good and bad) and also how long it took you to get back to reasonable function, and importantly, how long it was before you got back to golf.

We had surgery a few months apart last year I believe. Took me a year and I am still not 100%.

My PT doesn’t like the idea of the manipulation under anesthesia, she says it can cause more damage because you can’t tell them if it hurrts. (Obviously if this is your only option go for it)

We did some manipulation without being out and one or two rounds of it “thawed” me out.

Steroid patches hooked up to some little box.

Anyways shoot me a PM I can go over all the stuff we did, if you want. I’ll see if I can get the program she used. It worked for me.

Adding to this:

Had sulbcromial decompression surgery in February 2018, instantly started PT. I was back to chipping in a few weeks, and I was ready to play golf in May, wasn’t 100% but I was cleared to play.

By August I was back at PT trying to get the range of motion back. I had lost some over the summer. Fast forward to January of 2019, I had lost quite a bit of range, been really working at it to get back.

Honestly swinging the golf club is one of the best things for me to do, even my PT agrees.

I had a bunch of scar tissue form and that’s what caused the loss of range.

My wife was diagnosed with a frozen shoulder a year ago, she had PT at a rehab center to start for a few months and has been doing it at home ever since. Her range of motion is better and the gains are most noticeable when she routinely does the PT and doesn't skimp on it.

My dad had frozen shoulder a few years ago, and he recovered well, 100%, within 1.5 years.  You have to keep in mind that it is a slow recovery no matter which route you take. My cousin is a PT so worked with him off and on.

From what I remember, he said you need to move the shoulder to the end of your range of motion (daily if you can). Moving to the end point of your range of motion is painful, but that is the point. You need to grit your teeth and try to push a little more each week. PT had him doing a lot of stuff with a rope and a pulley. Using his good arm to pull his bad arm every which way.

Obviously, I think you should speak with a real PT before trying anything.

I'm no expert but your option 1 sounds insane.

I'm surprised to say that I've never heard of Frozen Shoulder. Hear of lot's of knee, elbow, shoulder, hip, and other ailments but not a frozen shoulder. I suppose if it were me I'd be seeking out the best specialist I could find who can offer the best "fix" and return to normalcy available. Certainly they're out there as this isn't something new. Except to me.

Best of luck with your issue and decision.

Thanks for the responses guys. I’m fortunate to work with an extremely good upper limb Ortho surgeon and my PT is also very good and experienced (he used to work for an NBA team)
I’ve been doing my stretches (including pulley work)

Hoping someone has had a very positive experience with one of my options, cos I’ve had a gut full of it

I had the same thing Jan of last year, with some labrum cleanup on the side. Even though I was cleared to play by late April I wasn't full speed and range until really the end of the season. I'm so much more excited about this season as I'm pain free and back to full speed and motion.

My wife had the manipulation done .... recovery was long for her.  She's glad she did it.  No problems since.  Not sure how long it's been since she had the issue, but it's been quite a while.

Just to keep the hot topic rolling, I saw my surgeon today, and I'm booked in for arthroscopy and capsular realease on April 30th. My surgeon is intrigued by the arterial embolisation idea, but it's a bit too early for enough data to go in with much surety. Unfortunately I'm in the group that more conservative measures were unsuccessful.

Best case is getting back to golf around August, more likely a bit later.

@chipperman I hope your process is a bit smoother and quicker than mine.

My surgery was 4/4 and now going to PT 2x a week. Yesterday was a mess my shoulder was starting to freeze. The Therapist worked it for what seemed forever and did get it to loosen quite a bit. Going tomorrow morning and get more work done.

Hi all

Well first off i hope everyone with shoulder issues  all the best

I saw the physio today she was good she edged her bets on what the outcome may be .She told me all the options so i have made a decision to call it a day with golf . I should be able to go to my local pitch and putt , so all is not lost ,i can live with it.

To be honest my golf game was erratic to put it mildy 😀

So i wish everyone well on the forum , thank you for all the advice and my forum name now is more relevant than ever lol

Happy golfing

And............ British golfers will win all 4 majors this season 😉

... Same for me. I had a torn labrum in the fall of 2017 and it kept getting worse til I finally went to an Ortho and was diagnosed with a Frozen Shoulder, something I had never heard of. The pain was unreal when I tried to lift my arm anywhere near shoulder high. Surgery was the first option and PT the second. After 2 back surgeries I vowed to only use surgery as a last resort. PT for 3 months with zero improvement so finally had a cortisone shot in January. That helped but far from cured. Continued to do PT for a full year and happy to say it disappeared just like it arrived. But for me at least, the biggest help was a device I used every day.

... I am in Phoenix so I do not have access to my records and I apologize because I remember how badly I wanted relief and I don't have the name of the product. But this huge plastic device had 2 round cranks that put my shoulder parallel and with the forearm at 45* I turned the crank and it ratcheted the forearm up until its started to hurt. I would leave it there for 30 minutes and did this 3 times away. Slowly I cranked the forearm higher and higher until my forearm was straight up in the air or 90* from my shoulder. It was expensive but it worked. Good luck!

I went through the same thing after a rotator cuff repair.  Physical Therapist had to break the scar tissue out three times a week to get the range of motion back.  Looking back, I would have gone for the manipulation.  PT works but takes a long time.  Also it will take a year to heal and get to feeling normal.  Hope it gets better.  It is Rough!

PT and time finally worked for me.  I went to see the surgeon that did the surgery and asked for the manipulation.  When he checked my range of motion, the amount I would gain off of the manipulation was negligible. I did the exercises I learned in PT in my garage.  They work but really slow.  I would suggest checking with your surgeon.  I've also know a few others that had shoulder issues and it happens more often than you think.  Good Luck.

PT this main the shoulder. It was evaluation day. Came in at 145’ range of motion goal is 160’ minimum. Therapist figured 2 more sessions thane break me loose and do exercises at home like I do now.
Therapist also recommended that I should start hitting balls, not go crazy but just start chipping to 3/4 iron shots.
NO LONG CLUBS.
Going to range in the morning and hit some shots, SWMBO as usual is supervising carefully

Saw my surgeon today. He's happy with my progress, and reassured me I have nothing left in the joint to get in the way. He gave me some images from my scope, and even with my limited experience of arthroscopic images I could clearly see how inflamed it was. Pain is now better than it was pre-op, and the heavy duty pain meds are behind me. Now it's up to me to stretch everything around the joint by putting the work in on my rehab.

I then had my second PT session, which went well. I'm pretty sure I'll be very sore later tonight, but my range was certainly better than last week. It's going to take a fair bit of work on both my tendons and my nerves to convince them my shoulder can now move. Small steps but I'll get there eventually.

I need to work on my patience and switching off my mind so I can stretch more effectively.
