My son, the feral hog hunter, uses his ball retriever extended out all the way.  He's had to rescue his ball from a gator a couple of times.  I think I posted pictures of one of them in the "pics from the course" thread.

"Rescue a ball from an alligator"? Much as I hate losing a golf ball, the gator can have it.  In fact, knowing one of these critters might be lurking just subsurface at the shore would keep me well clear.  I met a Boeing worker in SC when we were there helping start the new facility who had a nasty scar on his hand and wrist.  It was from an alligator who they had shot and were in process of securing to the boat.  He said it happened so fast he did not notice or feel the bite - and considers himself really lucky it was a glancing blow. 

This could have just as easily been an ugly scene.  I'm sure the staff at Bay Hill will advise players not to repeat this foolish move.
