I’ll be in Newport the better part of April. Any recommendations on courses?

I’ve played Newport National a couple of times and it’s pretty nice. Unfortunately that is about the only course I know in that area.

You're not far from a bunch of different courses - Newport is only about a 1/2 from Providence/Cranston/Warwick - Cranston CC isn't bad - they have an interesting island green. Triggs in Providence is a nifty Donald Ross design. A little further into Mass you have some other options - Swansea CC, New England CC in Bellingham and a few others - depends on how far you want to drive.

See if you can get on Montaup, great course on the water and very reasonably priced in comparison to some other coastal courses.

In addition to Newport National, I'll second Montaup in Portsmouth and add Meadowbrook in Richmond for your consideration.

These three as well as Green Valley - although it can be a little wet in the spring.  

Also, check GolfNow - Agawam Hunt was doing select tee times there all last year - it was recently renovated by Gil Hanse prior to the clubs bankruptcy.  It has since been purchased by the members.
