~$10 DIY Club Measuring Ruler

I originally wanted to order the Dynacraft bench ruler kit from Hireko, but they recently went out of stock. Additionally, they are around $30. So I decided to just make my own for the time being.

USGA/R&A measuring is based on a 60-degree lie angle. That is what these plans are based on.

Material List

• Empire 48 in. Aluminum Straight Edge Ruler - $8.97 (Home Depot)
• 2 foot scrap 1x3 Pine (good quality, S4S)
• Wood Glue

Tools

• Miter Saw
• Clamp

Set the miter saw to 30 degrees. Slice a corner of the 1x3 off. This leaves a 60 degree angle. Reset the saw to 90 degrees. Slice off a few inches behind the angle, leaving a foot or so of straight 1x3. 

Flip the angled cut so that it matches like below. Glue and clamp.

Once the glue dries, slide the ruler tight against the straight edge, butting up to the base of the angle.

To measure, press the sole of the club against the angle. Press the hosel flush against the bottom board. Measure club length.

My Wilson C300 4 iron is spot on the 39-inch specification.

Great idea! I just got a 48" ruler at Harbor Freight for $3.20 using my 20% super coupon.

I tried to make one a while back that I could adjust lie angles with and thought I did a good job until I compared measurements with a guy who had a Golf smith measuring tool. 

As soon as I get home I'm going to make one like yours.  It looks so simple! Thanks!

Here's my attempt!

Decided to use a hinge to allow for different lie angles, and will stick a protractor in there at some point too.

Could get a 48" metal ruler in the UK (they're all 1m!), so used a shorter one that starts at 20"!

I missed this topic when first came out. But kudos to both of you men for making these measuring devices. Y'all might not realize it but you're throwback guys. These days we all run to Amazon. (me included) In the olden days guys made stuff they needed.

Keep up the improvisation / innovation.

I did go to Amazon - just thought £50-60 was a bit excessive, so came across this guy's thing and thought I'd have a go. Works perfectly!

I'm really glad people still are finding this useful.

The set of Maltby PTMs and my wedges in my signature were all built using the setup in my original post. I never bothered to buy anything else.

Additional benefit is that the yard stick works perfectly for putting drills as well.

If only I could get one long enough in the UK  They're all only 1m, so not quite long enough for measuring, but do have one for putting!

I'll post a photo if I can find a useful way to mount a protractor on it, so that it can do lie angle as well. Not sure it'll be overly precise, but will see what happens.

Thanks again for your idea! Saved me about $60! Two planks of wood, a hinge and a short ruler was $15 at most. It's $70-80 inc shipping to get the Dynacraft set up in the UK.

Got a hold of a protractor and can now check lie angle or ensure I'm measuring using the 60deg standard. Obviously need a bit of a clean up, but it does the job!

Do you need to change the lie angle when measuring woods or hybrids or do you stick with the consistent 60 degrees all the time? Looks like a simple, effective tool to have! Thanks!

I stick with the consistent 60 degree lie angle for all measurements. That's based on a USGA document I found for measuring club length.

From my experience measuring a small handful of OEM clubs and also custom built stuff, not everyone else follows suit. But it's a very good and useful tool!

Correct.  Our club fitter/builder uses 62* to account for the butt cap.  Just like everything else in golf club industry’s, the concept of standard is fuzzy.  What one company considers stiff vs regular can vary.  What one considers a 7iron loft another considers it a 6iron (etc.).
