Albatross or Double Eagle?

What's the correct term?

23 members have voted

  1. 1. You've just holed out on your second shot on a par 5. You tell everyone that you made

    • an albatross.
      18
    • a double eagle.
      5

Doug Ferguson of The Golf Channel takes up one of the more important debates in our game:

For my part, I'm with Doug. A bogey is 1 over; a double bogey is 2 over. Therefore, if an eagle is 2 under, a double eagle is 4 under. QED

Besides, albatross is just a cooler term.

I support his outrage, but I think the real villain here is the term eagle. It OBVIOUSLY should be double birdie and triple birdie!

A double eagle is 4 "over"? think you mean 4 under.

Albatross! A double eagle is 4 under like MPR said. Either that or it should be a "triple birdie".

Albatross to me just has a negative connotation that I've never been able to get past because of "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner". The albatross hung around his neck has just stuck with me to the point that even doing something awesome like holing-out on your second shot into a par-5, that it should be called something different and more positive. Therefore for me, Double-Eagle. Although "Turkey" would be fun..! "You Turkey!!!"

I've had a lot of eagles on par 4s, but never had an ace, much less an albatross.

We had a new guy join our club maybe 15 years ago... new to golf period!!  A little on the crusty side, but generally a nice guy.  The first time I played with him, I made a birdie.  When it went into the cup, he yelled "Double Eagle"!!  Everything that went in less than par was a "Double Eagle"!!  It was funny for awhile, but I don't want to hear it anymore. Pretty sure I will never hear it on the course.   Albatross.

... Whatever it is called, I have 2 of them. So Double Albatross? The irony is I still don't have a hole in one. While more than a few HIO's are lucky, at least most times you are aiming at the flag. But with an Albatross you are just aiming at the green so I think there is more luck involved. That said, my cousin has never broken 100 and has 4 HIO's ... sigh.
At first glance I thought you were claiming a double albatross as in quadruple birdie! How many cart paths and sprinkler heads would that take?
I'd vote for albatross. It sounds so much more impressive than double eagle. Double eagle sounds too much like double bogey, and I don't like those.
I earned one if these on a par five first hole a few years ago. I'll never forget one playing partner telling me "it all goes downhill from here". It did. It's hard to keep up that pace.
