Speaking of balls - this should openacano'worms

I got such a great response concerning clubs to buy/try (I ended up with Mizuno JPX800 Pro's, but for training also got (slightly used) Mizuno 2 & 3 irons - geez, those should give me an education quickly) - well, as in that thread, I'm a "returning" player - haven't in almost ten years (shoulder problems/operations), am 60 yrs old, not very "athletic", seem to be able to consistently float a 6 iron shot 150yds average (yea, thats all - but generally straight). Please forgive my ignorance at the modern game, but thought that your experience would be offered as readily as that on irons.

So, what make / model ball do I get? Titleist's site doesn't tell me much (that I can extrapolate).

Thanks,

Linwood

Hi Linwood

Try a bunch out

Seriously though, you can check out the Bridgestone ball fitting that is online: http://www.bridgestonegolf.com/product/ball-selection-guide

Golf Ball Selector is another option, but I think that they charge for the service: http://www.golfballselector.com/golf/generic!home

Sounds like you did the Titleist one: http://www.titleist.com/golf-ball-fitting/

Srixon: http://www.srixon.com//

I would suggest looking at the Bridgestone 330RX for a premium ball, or e6, NTX Tour, & Trispeed as a cheaper option.

It's been a good two or three weeks since I've given this recommendation, so here I go again:

Try the Top Flite Gamer. It's a 3 piece ball, the compression is lower than most premium balls so it will go further off the driver, and it's cheap.

I like these responses. Like Sactown said, try 'em all. Buy sleeves and go out and play with them. Golf magazine did a test a few years back that showed there's only about 7 yards difference from a "cheap" two-piece ball and a "tour" ball. Of course, there's a discrepency in spin, because of the "tour" ball's urethane cover. So it's up to you: do you like to spin it, or do you like to let the ball run to the hole? That can help narrow down your choices a bit.

Listen to how the balls sound off your putter. Some have a sound that resonates with a person, some golfers don't care how it sounds, but it's something to consider if you're torn between a couple models.

Also consider what kind of weather you play most of your golf in. In the spring and fall I really liked the Wilson FG Tour ball..great spin, feels exceptional off the putter. In the summer months I found it a bit mushy and switched to the Callaway Tour ix or Pro V's...Titleist NXT is a great value ball. Still want to try the Gamer...Lots of positive comments on here regarding it. Try a bunch and enjoy it. In time you'll learn what responds best for you. Slower swing speeds tend to prefer different balls than high speed swingers...Oh, the Srixon Trispeed was an ok ball also. Good all around performance.

If you are going to try the "Gamer", make sure that you get the Gamer V2....It's a much better ball than the original Gamer.

I have been gaming the Maxfli Tour LC as my swing speed is about 87 mph. This ball is made for slower swing speeds. Most balls are made and tested for 110 mph swing speeds.

I have also used the Maxfli HT Tour

Just like Fozcycle I have been using the Maxfli HT Tour. Dicks Sporting Goods usually runs a good sale on the Maxfli products.

I don't know if I would subscribe to the "try them all" theory. Find a price per dozen that you are comfortable with and then maybe sample 3 or 4 models.

What's in the bag.

Driver - Adams Speedline Fast 10

3 Wood - Adams Insight XTD A3 Boxer

Hybrid 2 - Adams Pro Gold

Hybrid 3 - Adams a7

Irons 4-PW - Adams a7

GW - Adams Idea Pro

SW and LW - Maxfli C3

Putter - YES Golf Marilyn mallett

Ball - TBD - Holding auditions

Eyewear - Sundog Focus
