Just saw the post on Instagram. Gotta say it doesn't look good, but I'll also say I haven't seen anything like that with the (admittedly limited) Callaway balls I've cut open. Seems like something that would be quite rare and well within the range of expectations for a consumer product - in terms of overall quality performance, not necessarily product specifications and tolerances. What was the sample size on this? How many Chromesofts does Callaway produce per year?

I recently won some Chromesofts at a scramble tournament. I was going to give them to my father who rarely plays, but always seems to need golf balls. Perhaps I should donate them to the cause and cut them open? 😉

And that’s why I’ve been doing the epsom salt test on my golf balls.....

It’s actually very rare that I’ve found one to be balanced. Only one out of the 24 Kirkland’s that I bought was perfectly balanced. They weren’t crazy off, but they did have a heavy side.

Same with a sleeve of the new Mizuno balls (both versions).

Maybe a perfectly balanced ball isn’t the norm but a rarity? 🤷‍♂️ I imagine this Instagram Callaway ball would be an example of what could have caused one of those crazy 40yd offline balls from the MGS ball test.

For those of you that do the epsom salt test, how often do you find a perfect ball?

I put a dot on the light side and put that dot up when putting or on the tee shot.

Am I missing something?

After watching a couple of the latest No Putts Given podcasts I decided to give some golf balls the Epsom Salt test. I watched a few YouTube videos and then followed this one for how to (except I used Epsom Salt and a few drops of liquid dish soap instead of WD 40):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6343krKzROc

According to the video, all but one of my Callaway Chrome Soft and Supersoft balls were either balanced or close.  They spun slowly before stopping and a few stopped with a different side up each time.

Wanting to try a “better ball” I had recently ordered 2 dozen Maxfli Tour balls on sale 2 for 1 from Dick’s Sporting Goods. So I opened one box to test them. I was sure they would be as balanced as the Callaway. According the instruction video, 6 out of 6 were quite unbalanced. I was surprised and very disappointed. They spun faster in the salt water than the Callaways always quickly coming back to the same light side up. Frustrated I quit.

A few nights later I repeated the process thinking I must have done something wrong. Same results but this time I test a full dozen Maxfli Tour balls. According to the video, 11 of 12 were either very unbalanced or at least more than slightly unbalanced. That 12th ball was only a little better. Then I open a new box of my husband’s Sxiron Z Star XV balls. Even though none was as balanced as the Callaway none were as bad as the Maxfli, but they were very consistent in how they balanced. I also test one Bridgestone Lady and two Wilson Staff DuoSoft balls. They all tested similar to the Sxiron.

So am I missing something with the Maxfli? Is there something different in the physics of balancing these that I don’t get. These are the CG hyped balls! I have not played with or cut open the Maxfli because I’m considering returning them as defective.

I even test putted with my Callaways by starting with the light side dot on top and was pleased with the results. In 9 holes I only missed one putt within 8 feet and it was very close. Another lady in my group also tested one of my marked balls and she too made a 6-7 foot perfect putt. I’m now sold on the Epsom Salt test.

But what would you do with my Maxlfi balls – besides cut them open for verification?

It is rare that I find the majority of any ball/brand to be perfectly balanced (but I just started doing the Epsom salt test myself). I haven’t tested my XV’s and Z-Stars yet. I’d be interested to see if you cut open the balls that were horribly balanced what they look like.

I did the epsom salt test on all 12 MTB-X balls for my official MGS MTB-X testing. You can wait for my stage 2 for the results or you can convince me to spill the beans, your choice!

Who am I to keep a secret? All 12 were fine in my opinion. I didn’t really look at how quickly they spun but I did spin each ball and marked them 4 times and no marks came to the top twice. I’ve mentioned elsewhere my putting with these balls has been as good as any ball I’ve ever played.

Thanks for the additional info. I’ve noticed what you mentioned about the lighter blue core in some of the balls I’ve cut open. For example I had several Nike Juice Plus golf balls which are two-piece balls with an orange core. However, some of them had a slight discoloration in the very center that almost made it appear as though there was an additional layer. My guess is that this may have something to do with the manufacturing process and could be an indicator of a potential defect, but could also have no ill-effect at all. Seems likely they probably shipped a bad lot which happens unfortunately. Could be indicative that they have lower quality standards than some other companies or could be a complete mishap.

I’d be curious in seeing them cut open after the previous MGS post on Maxfli balls.

It`s a bavarian brand.

https://seedgolf.com/balls

It`s an irish brand.

I remember there was another DTC brand from the Netherlands... can't remember the name right now.

Both Pearl and Seed seem to be slightly cheaper than Vice and offer the same alternatives (3pc or 4pc urethane balls).

I took a look at Seed and they got no stock, everything is on back-order.

Pearl also has a HQ in California, perhaps you get access to these as well for testing? They don't claim they engineer the ball, but they do say they do the QC along the entire production process.

I guess they lack the "coolness" factor that Vice has.

There is another German DTC brand called Foreace https://foreace.com/, but they are priced like the ProV1's which makes no sense.

That‘s right! So i don‘t test them.

I will do the Epsom test on the mtbx.

Hope there will be constant similar results to wedgie‘s test.

Would be great!

also get XV‘s the next few days.

I will do the salt test and play it against the mtbx.

The owner of another site just asked me to not come on his site! I love it!

I had the GALL to say that a site that doesn’t take money from OEMs is more likely to be honest. He didn’t like that!

Goooooood stuff!

That's hilarious.  When I posted on Twitter recently that I hadn't been on that site in months, the same said owner came in to dispute that THANK me for spending time there.   I told him he was mistaken.   He posted some screen shot that showed me signing in the day before.

I just for the most part dropped it as anyone who has spent time there knows, he's never wrong and everyone else is a liar.   Fortunately anyone here who has ever done a forum testing, is well aware that as an Admin of a site, we have the capability of logging in to anyone's account and saying anything we want that member to say.    This is exactly the process I do when we open a review thread and I post the stage placeholders.

oooops!!  I guess he didn't know I realized that....ha

I'm sure the commentary was hot and heavy over there about the results.

Unfortunately some sites want to protect their advertisers. It is what it is, for better or for worse.

Nothing wrong with being good to your advertisers. But ignoring facts and spreading lies about other outlets in doing so is classless, but par for the course over there.
