New Hogan PTx Pro

Any thoughts on flex for the recoils? Pretty sure that is the shaft I want. The demos have the F4s. They don’t feel too stiff or soft and seem really consistent. But at almost 62 years old and a swing speed with driver of about 95-98, are they right? Update to add that F4 is what the UST Mamiya website recommends for my driver swingspeed.

Last decision before placing the order.

Order was placed today. I’m getting 4-PW with the Recoil F4 shafts, and a 50 degree equalizer wedge with the same shaft. I asked them to make them 2 swing weight points heavy, and four wraps under the right hand. Now the waiting begins.

And they have arrived! Awesome craftsmanship. The right hand buildup in the grips turned out great. The ferrule to hosel transition is excellent. Got to hit the 50* gap, the 7 iron and 4 iron tonight and all I can say is that these are going to be awesome. The V Sole really does its job nicely. Great turf interaction, no deep divots. More to follow, first round with them tomorrow morning.

First round in the bag.  It was misting / raining all front nine, and some of the back.  My rain glove (singular - couldn't find the right one!) was not being very effective and the club was twisting in my hands a fair bit with all my sticks.  I think between the rain and it being my first round with them, for much of the round I was trying to hit the ball as opposed to swinging the club.  Once I figured that out, my play with the irons went from mediocre to very good.  I think the Recoil 780 F4 is perfect for my swing speed, but still  it will take me a few rounds to get the "hit" out of my system.

That being said, the first round was a success.  I was playing the first round of my club's Match Play Championship, and the other guy and I were the same handicap, so straight heads-up.  We both shot net 70s, and I won 2&1 !!!

BTW the 50 degree Equalizer is an absolute weapon.  I hit a lot of great shots with it today, full swing, partial pitches, and chipping.  I'm ordering demos of the 54 and 60 post haste.

More reports to follow as I get more rounds under my belt.

How was the feel?  Like true forged or more springy?

Distance about the same compared to old irons. Feel is not really springy but hard to say much since they have graphite shafts. The feeling is a bit more muted. But it’s easy to tell when you flush one vs out on the toe a bit. But don’t take my word. Keep your eyes out for the demos (I sent mine back today) and try them for yourself. They are the real deal... badass.

More about these after a couple of more rounds...

Tonight I went out and played 9 with my wife. Earlier in the day I was waggling a club in the house and came to the realization that my setup had probably become too crouched over. So tonight I concentrated on addressing the ball in a more upright posture. And I started hitting everything really solidly. Was hitting the Hogans with a soft draw, higher ball flight, and really solidly.

Our ninth hole is a short par 4, 290 from the tees I played, and downhill about 40 feet. I hit the 5-iron about 230 off that tee. Farther than I’ve hit my Adams XTD 4-hybrid there.

On our 7th (par 5) I was left off the tee into the trees and had to punch out. Had 170 left uphill about 15 feet. With my old irons this would have been a solid 5-iron, so that’s what I pulled from the bag, and hit it about 10 yards past a back pin and over the back left corner of the green.

If you’re on the fence about these PTxPro, get the demos and see for yourselves. These are the real deal. Couldn’t be happier.

I finally got a chance to hit my buddies set last Friday. Hit them quite a few times and while they were nice, I just didn’t get the “wow” factor going. I’ve been holding off getting anything new until I got my shot with these, and now I’m comfortable in NOT buying a set. But with that, I wouldn’t cast anything negative about them. They just didn’t beat out my p790’s in feel, although they did spin better. Went with Mizunos, better feel, good spin. But under it all, I guess I’m still a mizzy fanboy...

Just watched a video by myswingevolution (Christo Garcia) on YouTube of him hitting these side by side against his ft worth black irons and he seems to be very pleased with how the ptx pro irons perform. I’m in the market for new irons this year and I’m thinking it’ll be between a set of mizunos or Hogan’s.

Well I’d say they are working out for me. 3 of last 4 rounds are 79-81-77. In currently a 12.4 index. Of course that will drop in the next update. Trending to 11.4.

Can you attribute it strictly to the Hogan's or has your putting, driving etc contributed more to the great scores you are shooting?

Anyone else besides@gbtrsc playing these?

Would love to see some address photos of the PW, and 8 iron.

They’re on backorder 3-5 weeks and as a courtesy, Hogan is offering a free Hi iron, hybrid or stand bag as a token of your patience.

Someone talk me out of these.

Got an email that the black version was released today. I love my Cobras, but maaannn do those look nice. If the feel is anything like the Ft. Worth with a little bit of help in the long irons, it will be impossible for me to resist!

  • 2 weeks later...

I just received a demo set of the PTx Pro. I had a short window when they were available with the KBS Tour V X shafts. They got to salt lake city 1am saturday morning but didn't show up at my door until 1hr before golf league tee time monday afternoon. So no use last weekend and we are camping from Wednesday to sunday this week. I snuck out during lunch on tuesday to hit a bucket.

First impressions were good. If I hadn't seen specs beforehand, I would have guessed less offset than the ptx. I was also concerned about the thick topline. I didn't think it was as offensive as it looks to be in some of the stock photos.

I THINK I was getting a slightly higher ball flight than with my C-tapers, but being in a rush and windy conditions I would hold off any judgement on that. I will post some address photos when I get back.

Didn't get to hit any balls into the water during a weekend camping, so I decided not to waste any more time with these in my possession and put them into play during our 3 club challenge in couples league.  I was planning on 6i & PW with a putter for the executive course, but with seeing as I had a 6i and 9i in the PTx Pro, I thought, why not?  The par 4's were no longer than 340 and the par 5 is only about 450yds so I could get to everything in regulation.

I ended up shooting within one of my personal best.  I had a 120yd par 3 that I stuck right in the middle with a super choked up open face 9i and I hit a green with a choked up open 6i that I haven't hit all year with a full 7 or 8.  Of course I couldn't sink the birdie putts but had tap in pars.  My only real issue was on the par 5.  I was just over in 3 but had a "flop shot" out of the rooty rough to a very downhill green that I chunked with the 9i then afraid of another chunk I bladed it past the hole and two putted for a bogey.

Nothing about ball flight seemed higher than with my PTx with the C-Taper Stiffs.  Flight is still pretty low and I get some runout on the greens.  It isn't terrible by any means, but some higher spin might be able to help me out. A recent launch monitor session with some questionable spin data showed most of my irons at about (Iron #)*1000-1000 for spin.  My understanding is that I could raise the spin by 1000rpm and still be ok.  Is the Tour 90 Stiff shaft the best option for this?

The Lamkin Z5 Standard grips were nice.  The butt end seemed a lot fatter than the ZGRIPS I have on mine.  I will have to pull out the micrometer to check this.  I wasn't lost without the ALIGN feature.  In fact, on some of the choke down and open up shots I was probably better off without it.

Am I in the market for these?  Don't think so.  I just potentially solved a putter problem during lunch hour, so any other new clubs are surely off the table for the rest of this season.  But I do like them, and love the black finish.
