2019 Official Forum Member Review-Callaway Epic Flash Drivers

Recommended Posts

Got out on the course last night, back held up OK. Was not full go with SS but the club still performed. Average 277 off tee which is 1 yard under my low range since adding the Flash to the bag and still 12 yards longer than my previous gamer was on the low end. One thing I will say is that while my driving handicap is better than it has ever been I am hitting only 49.2% of fairways. This is not due to the club, well actually it is but not in a negative way. I just can't aim at the same spots I used to, I run out of room. It is an interesting problem to have. And something I have to continue to improve.

I have talked about my propensity to miss left and how the Epic Flash has really helped not eliminate the left side but eliminate the huge left miss. 15th hole today, slight dogleg left, hit a shot that normally would have ended up in the field (black circle below) with any other driver I have ever hit. Ball had so little side spin on it that it actually bounce right. I can’t iterate enough how weird it was to see that. I don’t know if you can ever take this club out of my hands!!266E69F6-2372-4B0F-8A80-6B5A89442BAE.thumb.jpeg.3588147b92d187d838c2a99593964b2e.jpeg

That's an awesome drive@THEZIPR23! I know you said in an earlier post you haven't got a personal best with the Epic Flash, but that's one heckuva shot. I see 50 in your future.

Experienced a "first" at the range during my lunch break today. I hit a ball that cleared the end of it! I unfortunately didn't have my laser with me, but I had several land just shy of the berm at the far end of the range, and one hit the berm and skipped over. That should be about 250 yards carry. There was a slight tailwind, but that's huge for me!

The Tensei Blue feels really lively when you swing freely. I like the feeling a lot. I did schedule a Trackman session for May 21 to compare the two shafts and dial in the best fit for my game. My swing has solidified as I've gotten out more, so I'm hoping for a very successful session and MOAR DATA for everyone here to digest.

After gaming the HZRDUS black for the past 4-5 months I agree fully. It's definitely easier to load for people who are smoother in transition/don't swing at a high speed.

Big numbers indeed! My friend took a demo of the epic flash out with the stock Tensei shaft. He said he wasn’t any further out or better than his x hot, but I have a sneaking suspicion he is getting way too much spin with both from playing with him. Told him to try the HZRDUS if they have it.

We’re going up to the closest golf store in a few weeks to play with drivers. He’s prob gotta try the sub zero too.

I’m not sure if I’m a high or low spin player, so it will be interesting to see what gains I can get over my G30.

I got out and played nine after work today, since the rain is coming in for the weekend. The Epic Flash Sub Zero just keeps on performing. I had my best day ever for average distance off the tee, even though I couldn't hit a fairway. Screenshot_20190510-212510-01.jpeg

It's not the club, it's me. I had a really bad case of the pulls today and as you can see, sent everything left with the exception of my tee shot on 15. 20190510_174925-01.jpeg

It's a short 395 yard par 5 with a narrow fairway and a house on the left that I once pulled a ball into the garage of last summer. Needless to say, I try to avoid doing that again so I aimed at the dead tree to the right and turned it over a bit. It was only one of two tee shots that punished me, since I had to hit a low recovery shot under some branches to get it back into the fairway. The other was a pull on 17 that left me with no choice but to hit a wedge at a ninety degree angle to get back into the playing area due to a thick line of tall trees blocking me from advancing.

I hit another great drive on 18, getting close to the green again. I actually hit a provisional after my first shot because I thought I lost the first shot right, but once I got close to the green I saw that my first shot must've hit an embankment and bounced left. 20190510_184619-01.jpeg

Overall, I shot a 48 everything was off today with the exception of the driver.
@THEZIPR23 that was a monster drive and I can sympathize with your feelings toward the driver. I've honestly threatened to kick my wife out of bed so mine would have a comfy place to sleep. I'm thankful she's a saint and has a sense of humor. That, and for the fact that she encourages me to play golf for "science".

One more thing, when I started the SuperSpeed training I had two goals on this course. The first was to clear the creek in hole three. It requires a carry of 235 to get over it. So far, I haven't hit one well enough early in the round to do that, but I feel like with the Callaway I can do it. The second goal was to be able to drive the green on the par 4 12th. It's an elevated tee shot to a green that's 254 to the center. I've come close twice. Today I ended up pin high ( front hole location) and off to the left. My tee shot felt like it was off the toe and just had enough of a draw to throw it about 25 feet from the edge.Screenshot_20190510-220243-01.jpeg.468005e2abf121d6599eea0a4edabcb1.jpeg

I skulled the chip shot and ended up three putting, but I feel it was a win in my goal. I just want to know that I have the distance to one day hitting the green.

The skulled wedge has been working for me well so far this season. Been hitting it a little too frequently.

Went out and played practice round for city championship, which is right around the corner. Course plays different off the tee than my home club, fairways are a little firmer and don’t slope up at my landing area like my club. Frankly today it wouldn’t have mattered where I played. It was just bombs all day long. Longest average driving day I have ever had and second lowest driving handicap ever (+6.1) All that with a deviation of only 18.5 yards. AD962FD7-3E15-40FD-A2D3-4841CE4715E2.thumb.jpeg.69e95425c663c36eb82d6ce70f73e622.jpegTwo pictures below tell the story of how good this club is. No they are not incredibly long, but the first one was high on the club face. Well off the center. The second one was way out on the toe. Few of things; 1) I knew instantly where on the club face I made contact. Feedback is terrific on the Flash. 2) Both were in the fairway. 3) Smart distance on previous gamer was 275. So two bad strikes and one was same distance and one was 10 yards longer. 14EF654A-35D2-4F89-8A8C-A016C3FF08C5.thumb.jpeg.5570da07dd07f3d4064f3c2670f7f299.jpeg25048C8A-1105-433F-9DF4-AAE0AE4E66BF.thumb.jpeg.5f36666d6980c26d4db1cda1cd3c82d2.jpeg

P.S. No discussion about the fact that I didn’t birdie the par 5 from 20 feet in 2 or the sod I laid over the sw.

Once sunk a fifty foot putt with the Epic Flash, left a crater where the hole was, but it counted.

I'm still amazed at the forgiveness, I've hit shots that would have been almost unplayable with any other driver I've ever owned.

Some days you have it and some days you don’t. It is amazing how this game can humble you over and over again. Just couldn’t find a swing today. Not with the driver not with the irons not with the putter. Smooth 82 today with a driving handicap of 18.4. Even with that the only reason I was able to shoot that score was because of the forgiveness of the Flash. Still was able to average 261 off tee and 7/14 fairways. One OB and one that caught a tree and went 137. 🤦‍♂️

Having a 261 average after hitting one off a tree at 137 is still a monster day. Great job! We all have days where our whole game goes down a bit, but it's good to know the Callaway still puts up good numbers.

Only pulled driver 4 times today: 268 fairway bunker, 249, 237 (into wind), 286. I think today was the first time I lost a ball off the tee with Flash in 6 rounds. My swing on the front was garbage today and I don't think even Flash could've bailed me out.

Played nine for Mother's Day with my father-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law. My father-in-law doesn't really warm up and was ready to go right when we got to the course today, which is the polar opposite of my approach. First three holes were rough as a result, but after I settled down a bit the Epic Flash was a monster.

GAME Golf Round Recap

Shot a 47 (+11) which is the worst round I've had in a while, but it was not the driver's fault. It was easily the best club in the bag today. (Never, ever, ever, thought I'd say that about a driver.)

I bested my drive on the fourth hole from earlier this week. This time I cut even more of the dog leg off, playing a baby fade, carrying 234 yards with pretty much no rollout.

20190512_121443.jpg.d216a10727fdd975b1c6adf2978852b6.jpg

Feeling good after the fourth hole, I put it out 227 yards on the fifth hole, out driving everyone in my group.

20190512_122559.jpg.fdc86c5045953e982aec35fe25c5dc21.jpg

Finished the round with a 228-yard drive that just barely missed the fairway to the right. I may have only hit 4/7 fairways, but it was very close to 6/7. Missed those only by feet.

I am a little disappointed I can't seem to translate my SuperSpeed training to the course, but that's no fault of the driver. I did grab my radar on the final hole and took a second swing that registered 103 MPH. I've seen driver swings without a ball get into the 115-118 range on the same radar, so there is still some work to do there.

Walking up to a tee box with confidence is such a foreign feeling for me. It is so awesome.

Great job today@edingc! Sounds like you were hitting them solid. I found that the SuperSpeed training translates quicker on the range than the course, I guess it's a mental thing. Once it does, you'll be way past your playing partners. That one drive 234 with no rollout was a bomb!

It sounds like you had a great day with the family, that's awesome!

It was a lot of fun, even though my score wasn't great. Just left a lot of approaches in bad spots, which led to a lot of poor putts.

It was definitely a laid back round which may have contributed to my driver being so accurate. Not a lot of tension in my swing today.

The speed will come out of the blue one day. If you are getting that speed without a ball I would guess as the season progresses you will see some jumps. It is a difficult thing to "let it go" on the course during a round.

The Flash drips confidence out of every pore. It screams hit me. Careful though, because I have so much confidence in it I have to dial it back a little at times.

Keep it up. Love seeing the improvements.
