2019 Official Forum Member Review-Callaway Epic Flash Drivers

Recommended Posts

Played with the loft/draw settings some at the range today. Ended up settling on turning the head down 1 degree to 9.5 and setting the driver to draw setting. Seemed to be getting decent results with that combo. Since switching in the Tensei Blue the ball flight has been quite a bit higher than with the HZRDUS Smoke. Based on the Swing Caddie estimations, turning the driver down a bit should increase my carry distance slightly. I am planning on playing nine again tomorrow morning before work, so we'll see how it translates to the course.

I had some great lighting on Friday and a new phone to play with, so I snapped some pictures of the driver. I have played over 100 holes and hit at least 500 range balls, but it still looks almost brand new. There are a few small scuffs on the bottom, but there is no other noticeable wear. The face is still relatively clean as well!

Course had a frost delay this morning so I couldn't get out before work. My boss let me swap my planned vacation time to the afternoon, but I had a family emergency stop my round after the third hole (all is fine, thankfully).

Was even par through those three holes. Three drives with the Epic Flash - 232 yards (missed fairway by two feet to the right), 228 yards (hit a tree on the right side of the fairway), 220 yards (fairway). Not a single drive was hit in the center of the face and the third one was a huge pop up. Talk about forgiveness.

EDIT: Should add that I hit all three GIR largely because of my position off of the tee box.

I got out after work and was able to get nine holes in. My entire game was a raging dumpster fire with the exception of the driver. I ended up shooting a 53, but had the lowest driving handicap I've had for a round yet. Plus, I averaged 229 off the tee on a day where we had enough rain to make the fairways soft. Screenshot_20190515-182620-01.jpegScreenshot_20190515-182626-01.jpeg
My round highlight was my tee shot on three, while it wasn't my longest it was the most significant to me. When I started the SuperSpeed training I had two goals, be able to reach the green on 12 off the tee and hit one over the creek that crosses 3. I was finally able to clear it today.
Screenshot_20190515-192501-01.jpeg20190515_165119-01.jpeg
I'm still amazed at the forgiveness that Callaway was able to pack into this driver, I hit one a bit on the toe and still got decent yardage due to a left to right slope on the eighth. Screenshot_20190515-185322-01.jpeg
I'm really not happy with the overall state of my game today, but I'm ecstatic with how the Epic Flash Sub Zero just keeps performing.

Thank you! I was really surprised at the end of the round when I saw the stats. Not the approach, chipping, or putting ones - I knew they were terrible, but I just can't get over how good this driver performs for each of us. Everyone is just killing it!

I also got out and played 9 after work today. I roped one left across my body trying to smash it and thought I was going to take down a pretty big tree branch. Instead, it just launched a million feet straight up and landed 125 yards lol. Aside from that, Flash was great! Most of these were into wind aside from hole 10(we played the back), and with a Snell MTB Black which honestly feels much shorter than TP5x. The first hole was down wind and I absolutely smoked it, I expected to see a 3 in front of that distance when I walked up to it. The fairways were fluffy so maybe I didn't get any roll out, but I'm guessing it was the ball.

My ball generally stays on the same hole now. 🤣

In all seriousness, when my swing has been right I've been playing a predictable baby fade with a nice mid-piercing trajectory. I think every one of my great drives that I've posted here has had that same shot shape.

Certainly improving my game has also contributed to my success on the tee box, but as I mentioned in my Stage 1 review, confidence is a big issue with me. I feel confident stepping up to the tee with the Epic Flash in my hands.

I've definitely seen a difference, the ball goes a lot straighter than before. I will still occasionally slice one, but even that is a lot less severe. Most of my misses now are just straight up pulls and those get in line and stay that way.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you guys hit the F9 and how it performs. That was the driver I was drooling over at the start of the year.

I want to reiterate how awesome the ball feels off the clubface. Spent a lot of time on the range this morning and just had a string of five to ten shots that were all bombs off the middle.

I decided to take the day off work today and decided it was a good time to get 18 holes in. Didn't play too well and ended up shooting a 97. My game was off again, except for the driver. I did hit one in the trees on 3, then hit a weaker shot that ended up on the right side of the fairway. If I could stop pulling the ball, I would be great. This driver just wants to hit them straight. I sliced one on 7, but the tee shot is tight and I don't want to pull one into the houses. It's a mental thing. Sliced another on 1, but all my other misses right was me over compensating for the pull.
Screenshot_20190520-153340-01.jpeg
I didn't hit a lot of fairways, but that more of a swing flaw than the driver. See also: pull. I hit my second and third longest drives ever on 17 and 18. The 17th is an intimidating tee shot.
20180403_124953-01.jpeg
I hit it well enough to be in the fairway, but I just over shot it and ended up down the hill and landed in the area of the red arrow.20190520_151943-01.jpeg
On 18 I hit it with a little draw and it ended up getting a good bounce.
Screenshot_20190520-151622_Firefox.jpeg
It wasn't a great day ball striking or scoring, but it's definitely not the driver's fault. I guess I need to spend more time on the short game.

Had a pretty miserable round this morning (49/48), but when my swing is right this thing is great. (I hit a whopping 4/15 fairways so I'll save you the headache of listening to my woes!).

Best drive of the day came on No. 13, a 323-yard par 4. 236 yards of mostly carry, striped down the middle of a spongy, wet fairway.

image.png.af9f34fb8d321c753ca522d24530088c.png

GAME Golf still shows this round as a general improvement for my driving, and my average distance has increased some, too, despite the number of trees I found today. So that's the positive I'll be taking from this round.

I have my follow up "fitting" in two hours and hope to have some more stuff to discuss soon.

I got to hit the Flash at a Cally demo last Friday.  I hit the 10.5 with a couple different R flex shafts.  I did not pay attention to what they were.  My swings were awful.  I finally started relaxing and swinging for less, when I found the center of the club face, and hit my longest shot. 230 carry on Trackman  at 88mph club speed.  It felt really nice off the face, a more metallic feel.  Ballflight was low, noticeably lower than normal for me.  If I had a chance to get the launch angle up I'm sure I could have sent one or two.  I was teeing up in backyard style grass, so it was tough to figure out tee height and it screwed with my eyes.

I'm definitely going to try this club again.

One thing I disliked:  Golf Pride Align grips??  On an adjustable hosel.  If you get fit, then set it and forget it, then, fine.  But, who does not fiddle with adjustments ever?  Sorry if I'm repeating others statements.  Time to read more reviews 😉

This is the best part of the Callaway adapter. You can change the settings all day and it does not change the position of the shaft. So it can have an align and/or be pured and the shaft is still inline.

230 carry with that CHS is NICE!

That sounds like an extremely efficient swing you have there. I'll dive into my Trackman numbers a little later, but let's just say I am remarkably inefficient.

236 of carry on soggy fairways is awesome! I keep hoping for some dry weather to come your way so you can see what this driver can do with some roll.
@knightsofnii I second@THEZIPR23 when it comes to how great the Opti-fit hosel works with the Align grip. It's super easy to adjust and always indexed for your grip. Plus, the grip is . I just love how good it looks on this club.

That's good to hear.

The particular club I demoed did not have its grip aligned, it was 90° off.  Probably just assembled in haste by the demo guy

I had the opportunity to get the Epic Flash onto a Trackman yesterday afternoon for an additional "fitting" at Maple Hill Golf in Grandville, Michigan. Maple Hill is one of the largest golf retailers in West Michigan, and I had been curious to experience a Trackman fitting there.

Jake, my fitter, is a huge MGS fan and was more than happy to help me grab some numbers and also play with some other shafts and heads as comparisons.

As I mentioned a few posts above, I played 18 holes yesterday morning and struggled mightily with a two-way miss all day. That continued on the Trackman, but I'm still really glad I did the fitting.

The biggest question I had going into the fitting was whether my original setup was right (10.5 degree Epic Flash, HZRDUS Smoke Black 6.0). After my session I can say, "Yes, for the most part."

I hit a handful of shots with my current settings and shaft - the Tensei Blue I purchased on eBay, head turned down to 9.5 and Opti-Fit adapter in draw position.

My_Driver.thumb.png.c3d6696e7aa477ef34ed61c0e8358a71.png

As the numbers show, my swing imparts a large amount of spin on the ball with a poor smash factor, making me very inefficient.

Jake tried all sorts of different shaft and head combinations, and none really brought down the RPMs into a reasonable range. I did see some progress by swapping in a HZRDUS Yellow 65 6.0 shaft with the Epic Flash head. I believe the Yellow is one of the no up charge options. My original fitter did not have this available to try.

hzrdus_yellow.thumb.png.4d5bbe4a5e2c90800059aa2cad760e6b.png

So what did I take away from the fitting?

1) I'm going to go back to the HZRDUS Smoke Black shaft, with the head turned to 9.5 and in draw position. The Tensei Blue may not make it to eBay right away, but the numbers definitely show I need a low-spin, low-launching shaft. A HZRDUS Yellow could also be in my future at some point. I hit the Smoke Black on the range today and it still feels nice, just different from the Tensei Blue.

2) I need to improve my swing because none of the drivers and/or shafts can mask my swing faults. I really struggle with a pronounced over-the-top wipe that adds a ton of spin to the ball. It's a major distance and consistency killer. My better swings recorded at 102-104 MPH. Based on Trackman's algorithms, I could be seeing carry distances routinely in the 240s and maybe low 250s if I optimized my swing. I'm leaving at least 20 yards of carry on the table in some cases.

3) The Epic Flash, for me, stands out. I hit the Cobra F9, PING G410 LST and Titleist TS3 for comparison but really preferred the feel and looks of the Epic Flash. (That's not to say those drivers are bad or ugly, but I'm comfortable with the Epic Flash now, and that's huge for me.)

4) As the HZRDUS Yellow is backweighted, I may need to play with some counterweighting. My clubhead speed and smash factor improved a bit with the HZRDUS Yellow. Maybe I could get similar results with something like the Tour-Lock system? Or perhaps just some lead tape at the base of the grip? Based on my quick research it's possible the HZRDUS Yellow could play up to three swingweights lighter if swapped into the same head at the same length. Something to play with.

We're getting closer to our Stage 2 review deadline. is there anything else anyone would like to know in the meantime?

Thank you, MGS and Callaway, for selecting me to test the Epic Flash Sub Zero  2019 most wanted winner! It is an incredible honor to be selected. I have never been so nervous to win anything in my life but super stoked to put this driver through the paces. To all my fellow spies, I will put all my effort into bringing you a review that will bring insight into the actual use of the driver and how it might fit into your game.

My name is Ryan, I live in Fresno, California with my wife (of 19 years, and our two amazing children, Addison (16) and Thomas (13). 1030010889_shannonandI.thumb.jpg.7f7187918b1320e99b7496012515c963.jpg

thomas.thumb.jpg.9e5fa5f253ead51e079178600954cc44.jpg

We also have four dogs. They are all amazing and allow me to have golf as a main focus in my life (my family not the dogs). For those of you unfamiliar with Fresno. It is located almost smack dab in the middle of the state. Just over 2 hours and I can drive to the coast or to Yosemite. As with most of California you can play year-round, we will get very hot during the summer, but all of this has allowed me to  play a lot of golf and at many great courses. I am a Controller at an almond processor and other than the commute, it is a great job.  In between work and home is play, or a golf course in my case. My home club is located on the way home from work. It is a private club consisting of almost exclusively farmers. The membership has had better years but it is still hanging tough. With fewer members it means fantastic pace of play. Saturday 9 am tee time and its 3 hours 15 minutes. Since it is on my way home from work, I play frequently. It’s not unheard of for me to play 5 times a week.

I played my first round of this great game at the age of 13. I knew so much about golf in general that upon arriving at my ball in the fairway I went searching though my bag for a tee. That’s what I did on the first shot why wouldn’t I on the second? 😂I shot 99 on the par 68 that day and really should’ve never left the golf course. Instead I played basically everything but golf. Golf wasn’t cool, but mainly it was baseball that got in the way. Baseball is my first love and with it being the same season as golf, golf took a backseat. I probably played a dozen or so rounds between 13 and 18. I can still remember it to this day, standing on the diamond of my junior college team, it was during infield practice and I decided I didn’t want to put in the effort to play anymore ball. I went straight from the field to the golf course and haven’t looked back since. 3 months later I made that same Junior College’s golf team. Quick story about the quality golfer I was then. Our first tournament standing on the first tee, I was with the first threesome off. All 3 teams were all gathered watching. I was so nervous I could barely hold the club. I hit 4 balls off that tee. The first two went a combined 20 yards and hit the pro shop, located pretty much right behind me, the third one OB left, the fourth was destined for the same spot until it somehow bounced the opposite direction, it was in play and I couldn’t run fast enough off the tee. I made a 12 and shot 89.

driver.thumb.jpg.65570f586105873ba57f49ad8d5b97b2.jpg

As you can see, I hit the ball to all fields, just like on the diamond. Miss is either a block or a pull hook. Even with that, my driver is my weapon. I play par 5’s in under par, and if I have to hit a shot on a particular line off the tee, 99% of the time it will be with driver regardless of distance needed.

I have bored you enough with me now let’s move to the good stuff. I have had the privilege of hitting all 3 versions of Callaway’s JailBreak technology drivers. The epic was good but the mishits were punished. The Rouge was a definite improvement in that category. So, what can AI and Flash Face add to JailBreak. Is it the magical combination of both? collage.thumb.jpg.f18c257794ac96532c84bf86c82dda85.jpgI was fit for my current gamer by Club Champion, my swing being as it was prior to my lesson I was forced to play very heavy clubs my entire life. If they weren’t heavy, they would go left and keep turning left. Pretty sure if I played in space, I could hit the ball in a full circle. My irons for example are D9. IMG_0342.thumb.JPG.bc2e1accb024ecb853c7a7b291bf91a5.JPG

box.jpg

My instructor fit me for the Flash and we decided that as I have and continue to rebuild my swing, I can keep a lighter club on the planet. So, I was fit for a 10.5* with the PROJECT X HZRDUS SMOKE 60 X-Stiff,IMG_0324.thumb.JPG.4f002ea3d38bda2d4881442c29eb46e2.JPG

IMG_0325.thumb.JPG.060ca1de78af596f949c4ad9ce5116f1.JPG

IMG_0326.thumb.JPG.35094b7cdb50c45d3ccf8f58c4a989a4.JPG

it is turned down a degree and the weight is all the way in the toe. Lighter equals faster for me. With the swing changes and the lighter club, I have seen almost a 10 mph increase in club head speed. Prior to January 98.5 was where I was at. During the fitting I was between 107-108, with ball speeds hitting 163, now if I just knew where the club face was. I wish I had the actual report however during the fitting the internet and computer crashed. I am super excited to see how all this translates to the golf course. It really doesn’t mean much unless you can stand on the 18th tee knowing that a perfect drive will win you the match and then being able to execute it.

I had hit the Flash prior to receiving it, but for those of you who haven’t seen it the colors are that bright. Not really my cup of tea but results are what truly matter. The top line is just beautiful though. They moved the crescent on top more towards the middle compared to the Rouge. Which I am still undecided about. It is one of the few drivers that at address doesn’t sit closed to my eye. It sits very square and screams hit me. In comparing the shapes of the Rouge and the Flash, the Flash appears smaller and taller. The carbon top is one of my favorite looks and this one doesn’t disappoint.

Callaway employed a super computer to design the perfect face. 15,000 different faces were created, what would have taken 34 years on this PC, to find the right one. Did it work? Is it faster than humanly possible? Does the sliding weight add to ball control? Does the new carbon crown deliver more forgiveness? Or are all these claims just part of the never-ending marketing machine that is equipment manufacturers?face.thumb.jpg.c0af02fe90e4ea2518d7cae86551dd24.jpg

Whatever the answers are I am super stoked to find out. With my schedule as it is, I will be spending extensive time on the range (something I’ve never done) to unearth these answers. I am very curious to see work ability and how the sliding weight changes the dynamics of the club. Of course, there will be many rounds played as well, it will even get some tournament play as the season is about to kick off in earnest.

Nice write up.  That looks like a 2.1 swing!  I've read stage 1 twice and still don't see what ZIPR means 🤔.

I want to reiterate how awesome the ball feels off the clubface. Spent a lot of time on the range this morning and just had a string of five to ten shots that were all bombs off the middle.

Nice write up.  That looks like a 2.1 swing!  I've read stage 1 twice and still don't see what ZIPR means 🤔.

Thank you.

It is a nick name that I was given by a club pro years ago. One of the first times I played with him he said I bend like a zipper during my swing and it caught on like wildfire. To this day there are people who I wonder if they actually know my real name.

I think I hit the absolute worst shot with this club today, and it was on the #1 handicap hole of course:

Other than that though, it was another great performance. Somehow, every hole was playing into the wind today, but Flash managed 251 out of the car on #1, and 278 on #9

Stage 2's will be coming soon. Are there any questions or testing that our fellow spies would like to see done prior to that? I feel that all of us have been thorough in our test but if there is anything that someone would like to see that we haven't touched on yet let us know.

Thanks, PA#9! That really means a lot. This has been a fun journey along with y'all in the G410 test, y'all got off to a great start and put the pressure on with the high standard set over there. It's been fun keeping up with it.

Man, y'all sure have yer stuff wired tight. It's been fun watching everything you guys are up to with your reviews. I am supremely confident that your conclusions will be fair and honest and really tell a tale of whether or not these Epics deserve all the run they are getting. Buy all accounts, they certainly are and I tremble in fear for the day I meet up with one of you guys who no doubt will take my PING-loving butt to school. Keep up the good fight @sirchunksalot! You got game and I love everything you have brought us with your review so far as well as your positive contributions to the forums.

Cheers my friend!

I am about to run out of superlatives to describe how good the Epic Flash Sub Zero is. I played today with a couple of friends and the driver showed up in a big way. Nothing else in my game did, but the driver was just epic.

Had two drives go 270+, my driving handicap was 5.5, and I averaged 243 off the tee. That's with hitting a worm burner on 15 that went 173 and a weak block on 4 that only traveled 210. Screenshot_20190527-140758-01.jpegScreenshot_20190527-140806-01.jpegScreenshot_20190527-140853-01.jpegScreenshot_20190527-140911-01.jpeg

The shot on 8 that went 271 is a new personal best, and the first bomb that didn't have the advantage of the slope that funnels the ball downhill on 18. Sure, I pulled it and followed up with a lousy 3 wood, but it went long!

Overall, I shot 49/50 for a 99. My short game started out good, them decided the heat was too much for it and it left.
