Do you want Tiger to pass Jack?

Recommended Posts

This isn't a discussion of whether he will or not: I'm asking, if he were to win 17, are you rooting for him to get 18 and 19?

My answer: in part, I'd love for Tiger to finish with 18, tied with Jack. What better way to provoke conversation for years to come?

But in full honesty, I'd be pulling for him to get his nineteenth. There's certainly a selfish aspect to this: I want to be able to watch history being made.

Yes. Imo tiger is already the goat. Him passing jack stops all the debate in its tracks. Also puts him a few clear of Snead.

I'd like to see him pass Jack, and then I'd like to see the next phenom come along and pass Tiger.

I love seeing golfers perform super-human feats.

Yes I would. As a 10 year old watching Jack win the Masters in 86 with my Grandfather was the moment that really got me into golf and turned me into a golf nut. Watching Tiger win yesterday with my three children gave me that moment a second time. My kids knew of Tiger but none of them actually got to see him in his prime and yesterday was a glimpse into one of the greatest athletes that I will ever see in any sport. Not to mention Tiger now has three new fans in my house.

I absolutely do and if he does I think it will solidify him as the GOAT. If he does.....my goodness I can only imagine the hysteria that will take place. Obviously there's excitement with him winning the Masters, but with the US Open and PGA Championship being played at Pebble and BPB respectively, one can't help get excited about the prospects of him getting 16 this year as well. If he continues to manage his health the way he has the last couple years I think it'll happen within the next 3 seasons.

Interesting question, of course, but it's not about what I want........

It's all about what does Tiger - and by extent any of and all of the other competitors - want .. which is (putting all health issues aside)... Who wants it most?

Here's a good viewpoint on how and why Tiger won The Masters....

"HOW TO DEVELOP THE MENTAL SKILLS OF TIGER WOODS

After surprising everyone with his victory at The Tour Championship last year, this green jacket further proves just how determined Tiger is to achieve even more goals in the game, despite all the struggles he’s had, and all the voices telling him to give up."

PS: I cannot admit to being a big Tiger fan but I do well appreciate the way he plays the game, and when so many tv talking heads were saying "..never again" .. I said, "Never say 'never'."

Even if he doesn't, it doesn't take away from his greatness or a reasonable assertion that he's the G.O.A.T.  The numbers aren't the only measure, IMO.

Like many have said already, I want to see Tiger break the record. I would have loved to see him shatter the record, but his comeback story has added so many layers to his legend.

I then want to see someone else grab the golf world's attention the way that Tiger did, and shatter his record.

I love watching athletes work their butts off to be better than those that came before them.

I would love to see Tiger beat Jack. Jack will still be held in high esteem. I would be similar to Hank Aaron beating Ruth. Ruth is still considered to be one of the best of all time eventhough others have beaten his record. Shoot, Arnold is still considered one of the all timers, and his major record isn't close to Tiger's or Jack's.

I think we could have the debate forever. I also hate these debates that cross generations because you never got to see one against the other in their prime. Conditions change, the game changes. It's like mj vs Kobe vs LeBron. Brady vs Montana. Tiger vs jack. Were they all the best of a generation, absolutely yes. That said I want tiger to pass Jack. I think the chase is good for the game and to see golfers improve and grow the game is fun. Seeing tiger win another Masters this past weekend was so fun for be as a fan. Love him or hate him, tiger playing well is good for golf. It elevates the game and gives younger golfers a legend to chase, just like tiger chased jack.

I honestly couldnt care less either way.  If he does, good for him and it will great to see history being made, if he doesnt, he still will have had a great career and you could still make a case for him being the GOAT.

No because Jack is my all time favorite but if he does, he does, records are made to be broken and if anyone deserves to break Jack's record its Tiger.  He deserves it because he's incredibly gifted and he's worked his tail off first to cultivate those gifts and then to come back from all sorts of stuff.

So no I don't hope he breaks Jack's record but I'd be happy for him and the sport if he does - imagine the ratings for those tournaments as number 19 grew closer and closer.

Whether TIger ties or passes Jack the fact that he reached 15 at his current age is as impressive as Jack's 18. In the 'Nicklaus' era, there were 3 or 4 guys who won everything and the rest were just grinding it out to earn a paycheck. Especially over the last 5 years the lists of 'who could win major x' are 15 players deep. Tiger has had to contend against much deeper fields of quality golfers than Jack and Arnie did in their time. To get to 18 or 19, especially with the long gap in between I think would be more significant.

I watch golf for the skill and strategy associated with the game and not because of any particular player.
