There was just a little of it sitting down in the hole.

Consider it holed per 13.2C

Ball Resting Against Flagstick in Hole

If your ball comes to rest against the flagstick left in the hole, and any part of your ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green, your ball is treated as holed.

If no part of your ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green:

  • Your ball is not holed and must be played as it lies.

  • If the flagstick is removed and your ball moves (whether it falls into the hole or moves away from the hole), there is no penalty and it must be replaced on the lip of the hole.

To me it appeared that the ball was holed according to the rule.

Thanks for all the rules advice, everyone. I wasn't sure of the exact ruling and didn't have time to look it up as I had to leave the course in order to pick up dinner before it got too late.

Looking it up would have been important.  Prior to this year,  you could move/pull the pin and if it fell into the hole it was counted as holed.

I play quite a few solo rounds, so I have a tendency to leave the flag in to speed up play. I've never had it negatively affect my putting until yesterday, and I learned a valuable lesson. If the wind is blowing hard and I see the flag is leaning, I think I'll remove it from the hole.20190418_181036-01.jpeg
Otherwise, I'll keep putting with it in.

Also, kudos to Adam for offering the professor travel expenses and a room to go to headquarters to put his theory to the test. I hope it happens and I would absolutely love to read their findings.

I like the flag in for long putts but otherwise out.

I have had one putt with the flag in that was rejected that I'm sure would have gone in without the flag.

I don't like picking the ball out with the flag in.

I'm also finding that we have to constantly ask everyone on every putt on every green: In or Out. Don't like that at all. Once we take it out, it stays out, but until then it is a PITA. It feels like it is slowing things down. And when we get to a Club Championship I can foresee the pin going back in after it has been taken out. Not going to like that.

I still go back and forth on this. My rational brain says the flagstick in helps, as supported by the MGS test. BUT, the crazy side of my brain says it makes the hole look smaller, and if it looks smaller, it hurts my confidence. So right now, I'm leaning toward pulling it, cause otherwise it is distracting  and effects my confidence. There is a good chance I'll waffle back and forth a few more times before making a positive decision. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I've been doing whatever the person who putted before me does....If it's in, I putt with it in.  If already out, I putt with it out.  Only 18 holes to go by since I've started playing again post surgery, but maybe I'd putt better if I picked one -- in or out.

My rational brain...

Since when does a 15 year old have a rational brain?

Our league has fully adapted to leaving the pin in. Only one guy would have us pull it for him, but he has come around. It doesn't really bother me one way or the other, but the stick did reject a putt this week. I have my doubts if it would have gone in without the flag, but the guy is pretty convinced it would have.

You're probably right. I should have said, "The less crazy part of my brain. . ." 😁

Just leave it in please

The rules intent is to speed up play - if we all leave it in it will.
