Highland is a dump that's been on the verge of closing for years. Tanglewood went public about a decade ago but they are getting the layout back to top shape, it's an ass kicker. Kenny B
My top 10 courses are there not only because they are great courses, but because they have special meaning to me. I was fortunate to play some nice courses with dear friends, many who have passed on to the absolute best golf course. The courses important to me... Bandon Dunes (my wife and I played on spring break; we are going back to play the other courses) Gamble Sands, Brewster WA (my birthday trip a few years ago to play the new course on the Columbia River designed by the Bandon Dunes architect) Palmetto GC, Aiken SC ( a very good friend invited me to play his course built in 1892 where Ben Hogan said holes 3, 4, and 5 were the best back-to-back par 4's that he ever played. He's not wrong.) Caledonia Golf and Fish Club (the best one of 10 courses I played in 6 days for my buddy's' 50th birthday) Troon North (both Monument and Pinnacle courses before any houses were built; I am the only one of my 4-some still living) Kapalua Plantation Course (my wife and I practically lived there for 10 days; just beautiful!) Dove Mountain GC, Marana, AZ (my wife and I played the same 2 nines as the WGC Match Play, but we played it in JULY!!) The Gallery, Marana, AZ (played with a very good friend of mine on his birthday. His pro at the University of New Mexico South course arranged the game for us with the pro at The Gallery GC; former Tucson Open course) TPC Summerlin, Las Vegas (My wife and I stayed at the JW Marriott traveling though to Tucson and was fortunate to get a round in) River Islands, east of Knoxville, TN Not to be confused with TPC River Highlands!! (an out-and-back 18-hole course that crosses the French Broad River 7 times. It's probably the most peaceful golf course I have ever played. I've played it many times with friends that have since passed away.) Yup first time we played there it was around 15 mph winds. Not knowing the course or the severely breaking greens it was everything we could handle and then some. But the name certainly describes the course "Rustic" Canyon as it looks like it was carved out of the ground with a few shovels and pick axes. Mr. 82
Kinderlou Forest (Valdosta, Georgia - my current home course) Doral Blue Monster (1980's - WAY pre-Trump's destruction of it) Olde Beau (Roaring Gap, NC) Tanglewood (Clemmons, NC) Sequoyah National (Cherokee, NC) Orange County National - Crooked Cat Worthington Manor (Urbana, MD) Virginia National (closed) The Links at Gettysburg River Creek (Leesburg, VA) Honestly, my list is very limited, but I will tell you that I prefer courses with some scenery and mountain courses always rate higher on my list than anything else. Florida golf, to put it bluntly, can be pretty bland, flat and boring. It takes a lot to make a course down here stand out in my mind, but I feel very fortunate to live close enough to play Kinderlou on a weekly basis. The fact that they could host a PGA Tour event there tomorrow spoils me when I play other golf courses that are not in as good a shape or offer the variety and interest from hole to hole throughout the round. I will also tell you that during my 4+ years of living in the DC Metro area, that golf in that area is extremely underrated on a national scale. There are some truly fantastic golf courses near our nation's capital that don't get the attention that they probably deserve. I didn't even list Musket Ridge and Maryland National on this list, and I would love the chance to get back up there to play those courses again some time in the future. This is from the tee box of #14 of Olde Beau. This is one of two golf course pictures I had printed and framed on the wall in my bedroom. This is the view from the tee box of #14 at Virginia National Golf Club, in Bluemont, VA. I used to be a member here back in 2005, and would drive about 45 minutes after work during the week to play it. It was always wide open because it was so far from where anyone lived. It was jam packed on the weekends as guys would make day trips just to play this place. Unfortunately, the economics for the location of this course just don't work, and they closed a number of years ago. I almost had a hole in one on this hole, missing by about 6 inches. This is a closer view of the 14th hole of Virginia National without so much of the scenic view behind it. I absolutely loved this course, and miss it very much. If you have to recover from that every year or two, you better have a pretty strong revenue stream, and as you said, they were too far from the population centers to survive. How did it go? When we played it this past summer it was in GREAT shape. I had heard a lot of bad PR about the place but also heard it was on the rebound so we took a chance, just because a lot of us love Mike Strantz courses. It was bloody hot that day (played it in the afternoon on our way to Pinehurst) and there was nobody on the course. A storm rolled through for about 10 minutes but the course drained really well (again only about a 10 min rain so take what you will from that). I really liked this course, and with all Strantz courses, I would need and want to play this again, now that I know what some of the holes actually do. Jason Jarrett
I can't come up with 10. If I did, you would have never heard of 8 of them probably. The best course I ever played was Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, MN. Was fortunate to play there one summer back in the mid 90s. Beautiful day. Lovely walk. Shot 81 I think. Was great to see it on TV for the Ryder Cup a few years back. Next in line would be Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, MS. Played here a few times in a fundraising scramble. Got to caddy there once for the US Women's Amateur. Beautiful place. Others are the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Alabama. All are great courses for a good price. Jim Oppold
Some of these will never make a top 10/100/1000 list but usually offered a parkland setting, reasonable rates, and less than four hour rounds. A couple on here suffer from conditioning but make up for it in design. We miss you Cheviot and Waterway Hills!
