Top 100 Public Courses

Recommended Posts

Just saw the revised top 100 courses. It appears the course that is 4.5 miles from me made the cut this year. I’ll be playing #13 in a 6 weeks, and the newly added Grey Walls in 3 weeks.

Are you talking about the Golf Digest list?  It's amazing what comped rounds and advertising dollars can get you in a publication of Golf Digest!  They have Pine Needles at #79 and Mid Pines at #91.  There aren't 78 or 90 golf courses in the US better than Pine Needles or Mid Pines, much less that many public courses!  Golf Digest would prostitute themselves in any way, shape or form in order to stay in business.  It's laughable!

I would love to see a top 100 for less than $100 a round. Now that’s a list that I could get behind. I don’t know if I can really call a $500 round “public”

Well after your comment. I won’t be playing number 13... good grief. Didn’t check the summer rate.

Arcadia Bluffs is a fantastic course. I’ve only played it on the Aeration days which are the very discounted rates.

Yeah. I’m not paying $250 to play there. It looks great, but I’ll play some other little know places, like 4 of them for that price.

Yea, that's the trick with these courses. They look amazing, but cost a fortune.

If anyone wants to fund me I'll go on a trip to play and review all of them. Not a joke.

I've played 7 on the list.  There are quite a few here in the Pacific Northwest that I could add, but the prices are too high in the summer.  Spring and Fall shoulder season rates are not too bad, but you have to catch the right days.

With you 100% on this. Would love to see a Top 100 under $100, or even Top Value - although that can get pretty subjective as well since some people see Pebble Beach as a great value @ $550+/round...

There are some quality courses on that list for sure and it seems to be a fairly even split between west coast, middle america and east coast. Personally, I've played Pebble (#7) and Spyglass (#45) and they lived up to the hype, but the cost is definitely prohibitive. I honestly can't stand paying over $100 for a round of golf and I"m guessing a good number of these course are at least $400 a round. That said, it won't stop me from trying to play some of them if I have the opportunity!

Not on the top 100, but a course I was looking to play just went private. I remember when it was bankrupt and you couldn’t get people to play there. Crazy

Yeah I’ve paid big $ for some golf rounds. Problem I find is it never feels worth it when all said n done. Only way I’ll pay big $ ever again is for pine valley but that’ll just never happen

I just read through the GD article, and that's the last time I'm bothering with their top 100 "public" ranking.  Back in the 80s, two muni courses in Monmouth County, NJ (where I grew up) were in the list.  This is now largely a resort course list.

I think someone did this a few years ago for a small publication that is escaping me at the moment.  He mentioned how some were near impossible to get to because they were not public and by invite only.  I'll have to see if I can find that article, but I'd join you 🙂

Played #41 Wolf Creek last year for around $65 on twilight IIRC. Man if the golf course wasnt awesome enough, some of the cart paths were sketchy which were just as fun.
