Just saw a cool stat.

The last time the PGA was in May, the winner from the Masters a month before won the PGA 1949 (Snead)....

I’m sure you’ve seen that...

The PGA was match play format in 1949.  It didn't become stroke play until 1958.  Very different situation back then.

Interestingly, the 1949 PGA was the only major championship ever held in Virginia.  Hermitage Country Club hosted but is now known as Belmont Golf Course after Hermitage moved to another part of the Richmond area in 1977.  Hermitage still claims to be the host of the '49 PGA even though the course was built three decades later.  The following is a very good read.

Every time I play Bethpage, I’m shocked at how hard it is to advance the ball from the rough. I have no inside information on the setup, but I will be surprised if guys will be able to score when missing the fairway.

Not having played Bethpage and knowing nothing about how it's set up, I will offer a comment from my observations when the web.com (Hogan, Nike, buy.com, Nationwide) tour players came to town and played a tournament at our local country club.  I've played the course many times and the rough has always been thick and difficult (for me) to get out of.  For the tournament they let the grass grow until you can't see your feet standing in it. The pros got out of it just fine!!  Certainly not as well as they might have liked, but I was impressed!  These guys are good!!

Thanks, changed my pick and will now change my final score down to -7. Saw a European Tour guy say today he had to hit 5w into 4 par 4's today it's playing that long.

I had thought about doing the same, but I figure if one of the longer guys can keep it in the fairway, they can still go fairly low.

And for some reason I just agreed to play Bethpage Black next Sunday from the tips as a par 70. Breaking 90 is going to be a struggle and if I break 80 I am quitting the game.

Haha....good luck!  I was one over thru 3 from the whites several years ago and shot around 110 if I recall.  I pulled driver on 2 of the par 3's and still came up short.  If you break 80 after all this rain I'll quit too!

Moving the PGA Championship to May means weather (other than just hot, humid with T-storms) will be more of a factor.

I expect that the PGA will play some rounds at less than the tips because of the soft conditions.

My low round there from the tips is 72 and I almost retired after that round. The setup for a major is a lot different and with the rain it is going to play a lot longer than the card shows. If I can get through the front nine even or one over then I have a good shot. The back 9 is just holding on for dear life. 15 is one of the most brutal golf holes I have ever played.
