moving on from my Ping Eye2+

I have been playing the same set of beryllium copper Ping Eye2+ irons since the early 90's. I really love the irons but I think its time to move on.

I was just wondering in general how much more forgiving have irons gotten in the past 20 or so years?

I know that sounds like kind of a silly question but the Eye2's have always seemed very forgiving on my mis-hits and my distance has always been pretty good. Am I missing out on playing better golf and hitting more greens by still playing the Eye2's?

Any feedback is much appreciated.

my only comment as a long time ping eye2 user - it will be hard for you find something that will be similar in performance and feel - esp coming from the BeCu's. Just know that if you are straying - there will be some adjustment to whatever you end up with.

for me - i have found it hard to get away from the ping feel and the performance. if forgiveness is a priority for you - try the G15's. and i would not suggest trading in the becu's - i have met many people that leave and then only end up wanting to go back. if you make the switch keep your becu's. if after a while you confident of the move - then sell them.

good luck.

Well I cant really say because I am a die hard blade man. From what I have seen and heard the Ping Eye 2s are a classic sorta like a 57 Chevy. I think that they are one of the great cavity backs ever designed along with the Tommy Armour 845s. I know guys down here that have been playing them for years. One fellow has like 6 sets hoed up. when we ran the golf shop we had his number in the book and he would buy any set of Eye 2s we took in on trade no question no haggeling on the price he did not worry what shaft or color dot they were either. My honest opinion the eye 2s will be a tough act to follow but I may be wrong. Good luck to you maybe you can find something more modern that fits you.

I doubt you will find anything more modern that is better, with the exception of better bite. After all these years, even the BeCu's must have had some groove wear. Subtle changes, some of them cosmetic and some improvements, have been made. However a fair number of the modern designs are actually a return to the pre ping ideas albeit in a larger size and with smoother curves.

There will be subtle changes, depending on the set you choose, but as long as you change for the same club head size or larger, forgiveness should not be all that much of an issue as you are an experienced golfer and should be able to adapt, given practice time. You might even find the process enlightening as to swing theories and be a bit shaken to discover there is still more that needs learning.

If you have the time and the interest, make the change but keep the old friends clean and store them well.

Super Game Improvement Irons now a days have done a good job regarding forgiveness compared to 20 years ago clubs indeed, but not much from there. Performance wise, I think the difference would not be much regarding your heads but shafts have had some amazing improvement.

You might want to maybe try some new shafts. Nippons, or KBGs, or my favourite flighted Project-Xs.

As well, I'm sure 20 years of play have made some deterioration to your heads, specially regarding grooves and spin, so you might find a big difference when using new irons (maybe the difference with NEW Eye2+ wouldn't be much, but with old extremely used Eye2+ it will be noticeable).

Mizuno for example is doing a great job with forging irons, so you might want to look at their line before anything else. Nothing compares regarding feel/sound/performance these days...

Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.

All good ideas and when the snow all melts here in St. Louis I am going to get out and hit some new irons and see if anything jumps out at me.

Eye 2's are a very forgiving iron and still stand up well in the game improvement arena. There are higher tech GI irons now but the tradjectory and ability to control the ball is not as good as with the eye 2's. The standard shafts on eye 2's were very stiff, Karsten beleived that this was important for accuracy, but it also gives them a more penetrating flight than most GI irons which generally have lighter and softer stock shafts.

One of the main differences to modern GI irons is that the eye2's were swingweighted very light. About c8 or so. modern irons are in the d0-d2 range so you would definately feel the difference there.

All in all eye 2's are still great performers but there is so much choice now one cannot help being curious.

I have played a set of Be-Cu plusses with ZZ lite shafts among many others. Unless you want to play a ping set with less offset I think modern ping irons would have a similar feel.

Cobra S2 9.5 with Aldila Voodoo reg.

Sonartec SS 3.5 14* with Fuji tour platform.

TM V-Steel 18* 5 wood with stock reax stiff shaft.

Sonartec HB-001 21* hybrid with graphite design stiff.

4-pw KZG Evolution irons with Rifle 5.0 Flighted.

TM rac gap wedge 52/8 with DG wedge flex.

Mizuno MPT 10 56* sw with DG wedge flex.

Knockoff 2 ball putter.

ProV1 or Bridgestone 330RX.
