Indoor Putting green - anyone built their own?

Recommended Posts

So my 5yr old son (and now 3.5yr old daughter) and I love to go to the course and practice. We can spend hours just putting. However, we would like something we can use indoors for rainy days (of which we’ve had many this year).

I know three are countless products you can buy, but it seems like you are going to have to spend near $500-1,000 for something that is high quality.

If heard good things about Birdieball and/or using Toyota Camry carpet, but I was wondering if anyone had built their own platform with a regulation sized cup with any success.

My thoughts are 2x4’s and plywood, then glue the putting surface over top.

If you ever built one, send me your pics and specs please.

My two contributions to this genre:

I've now had that surface on my green for a bit more than half a year. My only complaint is that the place where I stand repeatedly to practice my straight putt is a bit worn: there are two obvious footprints there. But since it doesn't interfere with any putting lines, it really doesn't bother me.

Your setup looks amazing!

That putting surface looks solid as well.

That’s exactly what I was thinking with the 2x4’s and the plywood. Seems to be the only way to go. Mine would be a much smaller setup. With pros only making 69% or putts at 6ft, I might just focus mostly on a 7 or 8 foot setup.

My advice on that is just to remember how much usable size is hindered on the edges of the green. With an 11' green, with the holes 6" from the walls, spotting the ball a foot in front of the holes, I have an 8' putt in each direction.

Gotcha. Thanks for the advice!

Here is another option I was looking at:

My only concern could be that it would be way faster than what I normally play on. Cannot beat the price though. $20.29 for a 6x8

My most cost effective option is to just glue this to a piece of plywood and have a shallow cup, maybe put a back stop at the back of the hole.

I find that having a putting speed that closely resembles your actual playing conditions is really critical to effective practice. The greens at my course are pretty similar the speeds of my Big Moss green, but I played a course with a friend last week where the greens were much, much slower. I found myself tying to pound the ball just to get it near the hole. When I got back on my greens I was blowing it by the hole. I believe tour links has shallow drop in cups you can buy if go the 2x4 base route.

I agree. The hard part for me is that I play vastly different greens all the time. Some will be so slow you may as well hit driver and some feel like the US Open!
