No doubt it's pretty cool that Titleist is putting a club out there for those of us whose swing speed has declined. I  believe this particular driver will be a big hit with the old generation plus those who physically can't generate swing speed.  How much are these beauties going for?

So it's heeeeerrrre!!   The highly anticipated----well by me anyway  TS1 driver.  Touted for Slow swing speeds--85 mph range--Titleist's has gone all in with this awesome looking and feeling driver to deliver a bit more club head speed.

It has reduced the head weight to 275 grams from 300'ish range of the TS2.   Also the Fubuki 45g shaft and lighter grip by I believe 20 grams.

In my configuration I went even more--old slow swinger style--For the first time in my life, i ordered a Senior flex shaft.   I had hit a senior flex at the PING demo day a couple months ago and really liked the feel of the shaft "whipping" through impact.   But alas I already had my G410 plus in R in hand.

So what time better than when a driver that is touting being as light as possible, than to try the Sr. flex in it.

So vitals:

10.5 loft, almost went with 12, but figured it can be lofted up if I need to.

Fubuki 45g A (Sr) MV Series shaft  45.75"  which is equal to the G410+  BTW

The driver does not have moveable weights ala the G410, but does have some internal draw weighting, and a weight in the back center of the sole, to promote a higher flight.

I wrote some yesterday in the what did you buy thread, about my short initial testing on the SC200.   The upshot was I picked on the low side of 4 MPH in clubspeed and on a couple occasions over 7 and 8 mph.

Also to me one of the most impressive things, was the ball flight.  It was a very high flight that took very little effort to obtain.  I think this along with the extra MPH no doubt played a factor in the 8 to 10 yards more carry I was seeing over the G410 even with a bit less of a smash factor (according to the SC200) the couple that I did equal the 143 range of smash factor carried 15 or more yards.

Also the two other nice things I noticed.   The sound, while I don't have a problem with the G410 sound as some do, the TS1 has a distinctly Titleist crack to it.   While I'm sure it absolutely does not, but the sound makes it seems like it adds another 10 yards itself....HA    The other thing was what appeared to be a good 25 yards of roll out.   Now some of this can be attributed to the firm turf we have right now, due to any real significant rainfall the past week.

Well there will be more to come, especially with trackman numbers and real round updates.   But this could really be a very viable option for those slower swing speed players, who want to maybe get out of the mid 80's and into the low 90's at the least.

One final note, our superintendent stopped by....Initially to see who was on the side of the course that was supposed to be closed in anticiation of a shotgun start going out in about an hour.    When he saw it was me, and saw the LM and multiple clubs and sleeves of balls on the tee box, he just laughed and said....What now?

Well he is a very good driver of the ball, and has a rock solid 94-95 mph swing,.   His first two swings with it registered 98 mph and 239 yards of carry, compared to his usual 225 or so with his M6.   Even with the A flex shaft, he was able to control it and all four shots he hit, were dead straight with a nice high flight.   So that is said, to say this may not only be good for the mid 80's crowd, but even those in the 90's who want a few more MPH should give it a look as well maybe with an R or S shaft though.

I think $500 retail.   While I think you are 100% correct that it will help a lot of Seniors and others who have lost speed.  I just hope that those same golfers give it a chance.  I can't tell you how many times I've heard some of my friends and players at our club say "I'm not good enough to play a Titleist club"   That was true maybe 10 years ago, heck maybe even 5.  But it has changed so much in the past few years.   Titlesit realized that and has a really solid line of clubs good for anyone from scratch to 25 handicap.

So here's hoping they have great success with it.

I  just ordered the TS1 driver after getting fitted by the Titleist rep at my local course.  Fundamentally it averaged 12 yards more carry (212 yds carry, 15 yd rollout)  with the same rollout as my current TS2 .   I am a senior with average head SS of  83mph and 12 hcp.  I will be selling the TS2 I bought 6 months ago,,,which is rather painful.  Prior to the TS2 I used a Callaway Fusion (2014 I recall) for years happily  but the roll-out was rather low due to higher back spin probably.   Additionally, a deciding factor for me is that I find my longer clubs, especially the driver, are more difficult to swing later in the round as fatigue sets in.  I'm hopeful the lighter weight (lower MOI maybe) will lower my urge to swing harder to keep the speed up.  BTW, I am an retired mechanical engineer and understand kinematics, dynamics, and MOI better than the average bear.  Unfortunately understanding things in your head does not translate to playing good golf in my experience.

Of note was that number is  what the Titleist Rep/fitter told me from his magic computer.   What I can verify for sure is that the ball was flying a little further with the TS1 vs the TS2 on the grass driving range where I tested.  The rollout looked about the same but  My 69 YO eyes are not terribly precise...at 200 yards down range.

  • 1 month later...

Why didn't Titleist release all the drivers together? Or at least say "Hey we're releasing these now, but in 3 months we're releasing these ones also". I had a friend get fitted for a TS2 paid good money for it, then a few months later the TS4 released went back, and it's actually a better fit for him. Just wondering if anyone knows why they did this or had a similar experience. I'm sure they have their reasons, but this is also double or more what they typically release. I guess this will be the new standard from now on.

It’s a couple things imo. They released mid cycle which gives them something new and fresh after the other companies had their release so from a marketing standpoint it draws eyes to the brand. The other is titleist doesn’t release anything new just to release it they release something that’s better than previous release. My guess is based on their internal testing and feedback from pros they needed a lower spin option as well as realized they need something to offer the slower swing speeds. It also not the first time titleist has done a mid cycle release or released a driver later. The 915 d4 was not released with the d2 and d3 models.

they also aren’t the first brand to do a later release. Ping has done it several times since the sft and lst models have entered their lineup...again like titleist they don’t just release to release.

I agree, but If they came out what 3-5 months or so apart, they knew they already had the later release in the works and development. I know they use to be on a 2 year schedule, but I think they're about to change the game up and make everyone's heads spin.

They are still on a 2 year cycle and haven’t changed from that.

The release of the ts1 and 4 are roughly 9 months after the ts2 and 4 releases. Let’s not forget they have to go thru usga and r&a testing, titleist your seeds everything before public release and they probably didn’t know if or when exactly they would release. They aren’t being shady by not saying hey we have two new drivers but we have two more coming later in 2019. They are releasing what they planned and then releasing new product when it meets their criteria. Just like with the yellow prov. They could have released one whenever but they waited til the got everything right including the color

RickyBobby makes good points, and I'm a Titleist loyalist.  But let's not forget one big thing.  Titleist is no longer a private company. Being a public company they have a board to answer to and that board wants to see new product out and sales coming in year round.

I'm not saying that's the driving force behind it, but it'd be naive to think it might not be at least a part of the thinking.
