What would you do?

So we have a neighbor in our plan who is constantly going through everyone's trash and stealing the empty boxes. Not only is he taking the boxes but hes basically ripping apart trash to get to them and making a giant mess on the streets (several people have video from the security cameras).  The HOA and most of us have asked him and his family to stop they have not.  Why would someone need that many boxes you may ask?  Because they buy high end fashion items here (coach, burberry, etc) and sell them overseas and they need something to ship them in.  Personally I've started to put the dog waste in them, and unless I dump the poop out of the bag and use another box to smear it, he doesnt care.  I'm just tired of cleaning up garbage in my street.

So.. Does the neighbourhood/municipality not have roadside recycling? You just throw your boxes in the garbage? Are there reasonably convenient places to take your cardboard for recycling?

Honest questions from a confused Canadian. If there are accessible options for getting rid of your boxes that would solve the problem pretty quick.

We have a recycling bin that they come by and pick up but it has all the other recyclables in it. (also if its full the boxes go in the garbage sometimes) My other concern is sometimes I forget to peel the shipping label off and hes using these for less than reputable reasons and don't want my name attached at all!

I used to have bums go through my recycling for empties, so they could go turn them in at the bottle depot. They would also go through the bed of my truck. They stopped after I started vaulting over my balcony and chasing them down the street in my knickers shouting "GET THE **** AWAY FROM MY ****!!"

I definitely understand the feeling of privacy violation with the shipping labels on those. especially if he does not remove your name and such before he decides to ship them internationally.

Buy a laser pointer. Use said laser pointer to put a red dot on them when you catch them going through your bin...they'll get the message.

It would be a little work but, you could cut/rip the boxes so they’re unusable. After a couple of times he would know there are no good boxes he can use from you and stop.

Thought about that... or just using the laser pointer on something more effective, however I'm not usually home when he does it, just catch him on security cameras.

Have you considered that this might be a sickness or more of a mental condition i.e. hoarding or something? In the normal world that most of us reside, digging through garbage would have to either be out of complete desperate necessity (homeless) or there are maybe some screws loose and crossed wires.

My wife does a lot of shipping with boxes and we find ways to get ahold of boxes at discounted rates that don't require neighborhood trash scavanging

I mean without giving him and his wife a psych eval, pretty sure that this aint it. The sheet amount of goods they sell / store is astounding. Next time the garage is open I'll try to sneak a pic.

I second the Billy Madison approach, but seeing as though they have circumvented that, move to the next option.  Have a bonfire with all of your friends, burn all of your boxes and then dump the ash on his front lawn. Or make a glitter/baby powder "bomb" box.  As soon as he gets home and opens the box, boom.  It's spring loaded and that crap goes everywhere.

I hear you.  I am along the same line of thought.  Asking wouldn't hurt anyone. But since they like to make a mess, it's fun to help

Yeah that definitely is a strange one.

You could remove the personal info labels, flatten them and then keep them stashed.. and then just put a sign on the recycle can "Boxes $.25" ... as a passive aggressive business proposal..

I say you talk to the guy. Obviously he has a reason for what his doing. If you know he is always looking for boxes then maybe you can just set them aside for him. Personally I hate putting boxes on the street. You never know if a storm is going to swoop in and make a mess. If I had this guys phone number I’d just shoot him a text, “come and get ‘me”.
