I follow Mike on instagram and twitter and while his training and methods intrigue me, being a high school HPE teacher I don't necessarily need the program on the app. Now that high school football season is over it's time for me to get back at it a little bit more and try to get myself back down into a more appropriate playing shape while maintaining speed. The best golf I played was two summers ago and it's no coincidence I was at the strongest I've been in a while. Going to try and get back there this summer.

I love that he advocates for strength work over flexibility work. It boils down to this, who do you think is going to hit a golf ball farther, a sprinter or a gymnast? Or a marathon runner? Look at the long drive dudes, they have tons of torque and flexibility and they are still super strong. There are so many misconceptions about flexibility out there it's crazy. Often times these exercises (when done properly) will help increase your joint flexibility and a bit of light stretching after your working can do a lot for it too. To dedicate dozens of hours to yoga or pilates is unnecessary IMO.

So I’m a new high school coach and I was thinking about purchasing the whole program. They are offering a 20 or 25% off coupon recently. I’m a former college baseball player so I know my way around the weight room. The question is, is it worth buying the program or just putting together my own work out regimen? Are there enough resources out there on the web? Any and all recommendations would be appreciated!

I recommend taking a look at Mike's Twitter account.

He posts a lot of exercises on there are in the program, and some that are not. Realistically, could you put together a program on your own? Yes. Mike is not shy about his opinion about the best golf workout - it's one that utilizes heavy weights and the big movements, with the secondary emphasis being on stretching/mobility. My paraphrasing of him is that too many people think solely about flexibility and not strength.

You're paying for his time in creating the program, and specifically the videos that go along with each exercise. I have found them to be extremely helpful. Additionally, Mike does a lot of variations of stretches, lifts, etc. throughout his program, things I would have never programmed myself.

Just my thoughts. I do plan on getting the SuperSpeed-integrated program early next year, and I will probably get the warm-up manual, too.

Nice episode of the "Pro-Fit Golf Conditioning Podcast" with Mike:

Key takeaway - Given limited time, prioritize strength training over cardio or strength training.

His twitter is an excellent resource, his targets for Squat, Deadlift, and Bench Press as a % of body weight are helpful goals for any training plan. I did get his free FFG sample workout and saw a lot of overlap in the mobility and power areas with programs I received from a personal trainer in 2019 after a TPI screening. I found a basic 5x5 compound lift strength program (2 gym sessions per week) to cover the strength aspects I was missing after deciding against signing up to the FFG program.

The target for the start of golf season is to have Deadlifts over 300 lbs, Squats around 225, and Bench Press around 170. I have not been able to get my SuperSpeed sticks out of the garage for quite a while with the weather up in Canada, but seem to be gaining ball speed from the strength training as I have also dropped most of the power work (med ball throws/jumps). Last round of simulator golf had ball speed of 140 mph with a 17* hybrid on 3 occasions.

Wanting to get back into shape a little and shake off this Covid lethargy. I started the Fit For Golf 101 yesterday. I know that the 101 is the beginners program and i wouldn't say I'm out of shape just wanted to start back into it a little bit slower and transition into it. I also feel that for my age and swing i am not as flexible and pain free as I would like.

Phase 1 workout A was definitely on the easy side for me. Nothing to complex or exhausting and no pain. I look forward to the coming workouts and depending on difficulty may move up to one of the other programs after a few weeks.

One of the great things of Mike's programs is that you don't work to exhaustion and still get results.  I think you will be amazed at the results with so little input.

I think for maximal improvement in golf performance, this definitely makes sense (to not work to exhaustion). I am doing Gold WOD right now, and it is more crossfit like, so I am conflicted. But these Golf WOD workouts are high volume and push to exhaustion, and I am starting to get addicted to them, but I know they aren't optimal for maximum golf performance.

It truly depends on what you are looking for. If looking to improve just golf performance then it may not be necessary. If for overall fitness it is probably better. Just need to understand that while you may be in great shape, it doesn't mean golf shape. He talks a lot about the shortness and explosiveness of the golf swing and centering workouts around that.

Yeah, thats really where I am conflicted. I believe it will improve my fitness for golf, but not maximize. But I also care about overall fitness and health as well.

I am making some modifications to the Gold WOD program. I don't really believe in the "as fast as you can" or "as many as possible" aspect of crossfit. I am more of the thought of do your sets as efficiently as possible while keeping proper form and being safe. Like I am not going to push myself to the point of throwing up just to beat some previous time for example.

FFG is offering a subscription much like Netflix, $12 a month, and I am gonna sign up for it. I really need to improve my flexibility, and hopefully this will help with my back pain. I started walking the course again, and I really ride the struggle bus around hole 15. Improved consistency is really what I’m hoping to achieve, but never gonna be upset if I gain some CHS.
