MGS Hard Rock Challenge 2019

Recommended Posts

Welcome to the second edition of the Unofficial MGS Hard Rock Challenge!
Your 2018 Champs:  @HardcoreLooper, @JTexGolfer, and @bardle

Special thanks to @PlaidJacket for the idea of starting this last year, and to @GolfSpy Stroker and the MGS staff for ideas in making improvements for this year's contest.

Please keep in mind, this is a forum run challenge and is for fun. Unfortunately I am not a major golf corporation so I will not be clothing you in fresh new threads nor fitting you for a custom made JohnSmalls bag full of golf clubs (lefties only).  But play your cards right you could find yourself with an induction into the MGS Hard Rock Challenge HOF, a small trophy and a prize to the winner!

All rules from last year are in effect with a few updates in blue.

  • Rounds must be played from June 1 to June 30
  • You must use an approved hard rock for your 9 hole round to count. Picture of rock(s) used.
    • Rule of thumb:  Ball must be a 2 piece surlyn covered rock.  Any ball with "soft" in it's name will DQ your round.
  • You may play as many times as you wish, best 9 holes submitted counts for score.
    • Need to include handicap, slope, and course rating for new scoring method
  • 9 holes must include at least one par 5 and one par 3.
  • Brownie points for putt putt and range balls!

NOW FEATURING LONG DRIVE AND CLOSEST TO THE PIN
We are excited to add these to the contest.  This is especially for fun and will be on an honor basis.

-Long drive rules:

  • Long drive in fairway, GPS verified, photo or screenshot must be included

-Closest to the Pin (Par 3 only)

  • Shots within 10ft of pin qualify, photo must be included
  • Measurement taken with heel-to-toe steps or by putter measurement.  Please list distance with picture and measurement taken.

***Scoring has been simplified to encompass handicap and course difficulty!
{Gross Score-[(Slope/113)*((Handicap/2)]}+(72-Course Rating)

Example:

*Keep in mind banter is welcome and expected.  Feel free to provide a mini review of the rock used.  We like a good laugh!

Good luck guys, lets make this fun!

Thanks for taking the initiative @JohnSmalls!

Last year's thread was really good and was really funny to follow along. I look forward to more participating this year and am also interested in how @PING Apologist #9 will top the catcher's gear on the first tee. I am definitely in.

Putting this out there, I'm not using the new putter I'm testing for the forum for this round. Apparently you can damage the microhinge face if you aren't careful, and a hard rock isn't going anywhere near those.

Rocks choosen!

Welcome aboard, T!  Glad to have you aboard and looking forward to seeing how you do in the competition! For the sake of the competition the Tour Balata is effectively an old ProV and won't make the cut.  Fire away with the Spalding though!

Thanks for getting this out there @JohnSmalls!!! I'm both excited and scared for this years' challenge and I hope to have a large field participating with all of us nuts! The addition of the longest drive & closest-to-the-pin are both very welcome and should certainly add to the riot. As much as I dislike the sound of my driver, I'm assured to really hate it after some filling-loosening hosel shots with some awful round bricks...safety glasses and some added protection to the "gentleman's" area are going to be warranted for sure..! Maybe we can get a sponsorship from Wilson or Duke one of these days...😜

Gotta add this cartoon in again...it's probably my favorite golf clip of all time and I think it fits in here nicely...

I have been looking forward to it all year, @MaxEntropy!   @PING Apologist #9 had the best post from last year's competition.  Interested to see if he brings it back, or if anyone can top it!

HA! I got some "idears" but many of them come with the caveat that there could be a some sort of misdemeanor involved somehow...I'll keep refining...

Anyhow here are a couple of more stinkers to go into my HRC pile of candidates...

The "NITRO" label always gets my attention for a really bad "explosive" type of ball. The yellow cover on this fine example should be beneficial for me as I hope it will help the team of surgeons working on my twitching body to better identify ball shards more easily from shattered bone fragments...  I wonder if someone makes a spleen guard BTW... Also, if you smell cordite after a tee shot, is that bad..??!!!

God have mercy on us all...

I had to read this post to my wife because I was laughing so hard at the excellent visual you painted for us here.

Best laugh I've had all day, thank you.

Hey, I played a pink Nitro to victory last year.  Don't be jealous of the rocks that I got.

I'd like to continue my tradition of stealing rocks from my youngest daughter's bag.  She's now into the Volvik Vivid.  Will that qualify?  Or just the Vivid XT?

Heh! I wonder if they make an "XE" version..? Extra Explosive! What would you suppose is the effective yield of a grenade like that?

The champ has arrived!  I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the Volviks are an upgrade above the rock realm.  The regular vivid is a 3 piece premium ball, and the XT is a 4 piece tour ball. But the Nitro is still golden!

My buddy has some of these. Pretty sure I can have a couple. Got to be as bad as a Nitro, doesn't it?Screenshot_2019-05-28-21-07-15-01.jpeg.7ed4b4b6eb8eb260594755080aa009bd.jpeg

Even worse, it's a sponge that's turned into a rock.  These are definitely conforming.

They don't need an Extra Explosive model, the regular is plenty explosive. Watch for crazy fliers out of rough. I hit a 180 yard 9 iron out of light rough in the challenge last year with the Nitro.

Ooooh, you're killing me, Smalls 🙂

I think the Nitros are all gone, and the pink Slazenger Raw Distance balls are low compression. I need a new weapon. Suggestions welcome.
