sirchunksalot
Last year, I bought several buckets of golf balls at Goodwill to take them to the local First Tee. And shortly afterward, they decided they didn't want donated balls, so they are in my garage. I went through a couple of them, finding no end of Top Flites and Pinnacle Golds. So I'm nicely stocked. But I hoped, I searched, I prayed for the hard rock holy grail: the Molitor. And then I found one. And another. And a third, a fourth and a fifth. Five Molitors! My precious indeed. The question is... will I have any teeth left at the end of the round? I can honestly say I've never heard of a Molitor. What's the 422 stand for? The compression? fixyurdivot
A fellow spy and I are meeting up this coming Thursday for a round of golf - which will include the HRC. Not spilling the beans on who quite yet. I'm not sure which balls I have in inventory meet the "hard rock" criteria. Here are some I pulled from a couple of plastic bags filled with semi-retired, overstock. The sleeve of Hogan 392 were from my Dad's bag. I never played them, just kept for keepsake. He'd have absolutely loved a contest like this and would want me to play one for him... but are they conforming? If you need to know more info about any of these to determine if they are a hard rock, let me know. They look good with the exception of the Nike RZN Black (4 piece urethane) which is a great ball and one of my favorites, and the Slazenger (soft/low compression core). I have no idea about the Hogan. 2 piece or less, surlyn cover, and hard as a rock cores are what we are looking for. If the Hogan classifies, go for it. Glad you'll be joining the fun! JohnSmalls
First round in! I may have had an advantage today by having a golf lesson earlier today....but you boys better go low, because as much to my own surprise, the gauntlet has been thrown down. I played the back 9 at my home course, Spring Lake Country Club. The white tees rate (70.9, 121). The evnroll was on fire and got me to a 46. My long drive for the day ended up at 292 on a downhill hole (#17). However, with two creeks that have to be cleared at 260, driver is not a safe bet. I can thank the drought for the roll out but the tee shot ended up in the rough. So my paltry uphill and into the wind fade will have to count for my long drive at a whopping 218 on the par 4 12th hole. I had the pure joy of playing a nice piece of fine granite, a number 3 Nitro Extreme Distance, until it was shanked into the woods on it's way to a 9 stroke blow up on the par 5 13th. An exquisite piece of hardened Gold from Pinnacle made it the rest of the way and boy was it pure gold. It should have been labelled Extreme Distance. That ball, though not as rock hard as a Top Flite, could still have it's dimples counted from the center of your clubface. But that rock solid feel did rocket off of the face and roll out like the road runner running from Wile E. Coyote. It also made a great showing with my Evnroll, as mentioned before, smashing into the pin and dropping from 23 feet and 12 feet. It also scared a few holes with a few bump n' runs. The honeymoon period has been nice, but I'll be glad to get back to a urethane covered ball soon. No closest to the pin for this round. RIP Nike golf, that Platinum was a great ball but it’s a urethane tour ball, so no rock. Where in the world did you find a Nike One? Where in the world did you find a Nike One? Crap! Fine, it's out of the mix then. I figured (incorrectly it seems) that anything labeled with one of the harder substances known to man that exists on Earth (i.e: Titanium) would be a sure bet to qualify...! A "tour" ball 'eh? Dammit! As to where I found it..? Lord only knows, though if I had to take a guess, I'd say I may have "liberated" if from Jack's course out in Bend called Pronghorn when I played there for my 50'th b-day last August. Is this model rare..? JohnSmalls
@PING Apologist #9 your reasoning was sound. Most “titanium” balls tend to be of the rock variety. When Nike debuted the One ball in the mid 2000’s it came out as One Black and One Gold, then One Platinum. Ironically, the gold and platinum were the high spin balls much like the RZN Platinum of recent year. They seem to be on the rare (as chicken lips) side now because they weren’t huge sellers and they are a decade plus old. I pulled it (carefully) out of the ammo can and will be armed with the remaining 11 bombs as I venture out today to play a little golf hooky. 911 is on speed-dial... Also, if this particular category came up as a set of Jeopardy! questions, no doubt you'd easily run the board..! I am old enough to remember that Hogan ball--- I do not know how to classify it-- I do know it came out we were still hitting balata and Hogan even had a balata ball out---- I do remember it was Surlyn covered and with the dimple configuration it was a distance ball.
