OK Spies...I know you've all been waiting so here it is...

MY OFFICIAL 2019 MGS HARD ROCK CHALLENGE PIC SUBMISSION...

TITLED: "ONCE MORE INTO THE BREECH!!!"

IMG_0198.thumb.jpg.8a929caee4bb275b0eba721bb20eb7fe.jpg

And yes...the shirt is red so you can't tell if I'm bleeding while I kill it out on the course...NOT!

Did my second 9 of the day for the HRC using this gem...

IMG_20190622_170057415.thumb.jpg.9a6312418c456fd0efe8fd41529e74eb.jpg

Brick is too kind to describe the feeling this gives and kept on giving... However, I somehow pulled off a 43 with it and had a 253-yd drive with it too...honest!

Screenshot_20190622-201109.thumb.png.552ed235fc1740c00d45c2a508dee063.png

Hole 17 from the elevated tee box and "KA-WHAMO!" No closest to the pin to report, but had 2 short pitch shots with my 58* that wound up being "gimmes".

Details for the HRC:

-Ball used: #4 Revolution

-Boise Ranch golf Course, Meridian, Idaho http://boiseranchgc.com/-scorecard

-Gold Tees_68.1/119, 6,070-yds

Score: 43

Current hcp (unofficial): 19.2

Longest drive: 253-yds

I can honestly say I didn't hate the MF Revolution. Not bad honestly though I may change my mind after my emergency dental appointment tomorrow....Only kidding. We were able to pack in the gauze and curtail most of the bleeding while we played on...

Man's game B**CH!!!!

Somebody get me an aspirin...

First of all, I'm glad to see you wore proper protection, and I'm glad you told us you weren't bleeding. I didn't think that little box of bandaids would do any good with that amount of blood. That outfit is awesome!

That's one heckuva drive and a great round you put up! I'm just wondering, did your G410 hold up to the task and maintain its original shape, or does it look like someone went at it with buckshot?

You always bring your A game to the HRC! MVP! MVP! MVP!

Thanks Bud! Yeah, I was expecting someone to call the Funny Farm and send the "nice" men out to pick me up and haul me away in their rubber truck, but I somehow was able to avoid all that..! Heck, that may still happen...🤪

Dang, I should-a snapped a pic of the driver face before I wiped it down. There were ball marks all over that thing that indeed looked like it had taken a shotgun blast! Something tells me I may have voided the warranty with PING for "improper usage" or "abuse beyond normal golf activities" or some such...😜

I worried about that back in the winter when I was outside in front of the house in the dark doing SuperSpeed training. I had a flashlight shining toward the radar and people driving by were looking at me like I was crazy, especially doing the kneeling swings. I think your outfit takes the cake, though.

Wow, wish I had discovered this sooner!

Can I get a pre-check on Vice Drive balls?  I have a bunch with my company logo on them.

If not, I'll dip into my range ball stash, I'm sure I can find some old crap 🙂

I am really sorry I missed your post!  Go ahead with the Vice's.  Send em deep!

Dum dum dum.  WE HAVE A NEW LEADER!   @sirchunksalot, way to step up and take over the top spot.

I don't know how long it will last though...I think @HardcoreLooper has a low round left in him and @MaxEntropy has the Molitor Cocktails on deck to go to the top.

*One week left!  Who has it in them to win this thing?

(and the top prize)

Also John, as an aside I played a nine hole course, so I have a course rating for 9, not 18. If you wanna double it for calculation that's fine, or half the 72 to 36

Send it as/is and I'll make the corrections so that it fits in the calculation.

Attempt number 2 at the HRC.  Let me tell you, the hardest thing in the world to do is to defend the title.  And this round isn't going to do it, either.

So I roll up to Belmont Golf Course, once the home of the 194-something PGA championship but now possibly going to be sold by the county or turned into a non-golf park.  Upon opening up the trunk, what was waiting for me?

image.thumb.png.98e8ad4abeea260425b346c10708e513.png

It's an omen, right?

The number was appropriate, as it was much like playing with a .22 round, or what I'd imagine that would be like - there's no controlling this thing.  The Velociraptor is long, but god knows where it's going.  Especially with the way I'm swinging these days.

A good sandy par on #2 and a nice up-and-down on the par 4.5 5th gave way to a prolonged trip on the bogey train.  A half-hearted wave at my birdie putt on 9 led to a not-awesome 43.

  • Belmont Golf Course, Richmond, VA
  • Blue Tees:  71.1/129 - 6268 yards
  • Score: 43
  • Current hcp: 6.2

I started playing much better on the back nine and was only +3 after the 16th hole.  Sadly, I was playing behind a parade of JB Holmes wannabes, and it was absolutely pitch black as I scraped it up 16.  I needed my cell phone flashlight to walk in the last two holes without killing myself.  So while I couldn't turn in what would likely have been a much better score, I can turn in my drive on 14:

image.thumb.png.f4ca4163205368f0be86c5a40327ca48.png

I'm pretty slammed this week, so I doubt I'll get out again before the end of the comp.  Many thanks to @JohnSmalls for putting this on for us!

HARD ROCK CHALLENGE 2019: The Long Walk, partially spoiled

So, Sunday morning, rolled out of bed and hopped onto GolfNow and saw a hot deal for a course I thought of taking on for the HRC, Tecumseh Golf Club in Syracuse. 10 Bucks for 9 holes and a cart. Who says no? I thought it perfect because it wasn't long enough where playing a ball I could barely control would be a downside and playing restricted flight balls like a mini-golf and range ball wouldn't be awful. Boy was I about to learn my mistakes.

So, Tecumseh is a sleepy little 9 hole course with some bunkers around the corner from Drumlins, a golf property owned by Syracuse University. Two par 5's (although one is only 400 yards) and 3 par 3's (145, 180, and 210).

I started my round with the mini-golf ball I freed from Atlantic City. I gotta say, the thing flew pretty straight and a decent yardage off the driver. Nothing that would have qualified me for the Long Drive, but around 230-245 yards, which all things considered was pretty good. Normally I hit this driver around 255-265 so there is some distance loss but off the big stick it didn't feel like a rock. Irons though, whoa momma. I'd call it a knuckleball, but it's more like a wounded duck. So, first hole. Drive, pitch, two putt par. Second hole, drive and then I had 165 in on the par 5. Pin was at the back and I figured it wasn't going typical distances. Instead of my stock 7, I hit 6, ball never got above my shoulder and came up 15 yards short and it was a good strike. Got it up on the back edge with the third and 2 putted for par. Third, similar to the first and a par. Fourth hole, drove it hole high, pitched to 5 feet, made the birdie.

I WAS -1 THROUGH 4 WITH A MINI-GOLF BALL

More importantly, I was having a blast. It was 4 of the most fun holes I've played this year. The ball wasn't so awful that I needed to make up for, but it was fun to try and work around some of the limitations and just swing my ass off to get it to where I needed. Plus since I was swinging free everything was working!

Then, I lost my mini-golf ball on the par 3 5th. I still don't understand how it happened. I tugged a 7 iron into the rough left of the green and never found it. I dropped the range ball, and that's when the problems started. Folks, I know it may go without saying, but RANGE BALLS SUCK. If there was a ball that would have fit the rock comparison it was this one. Chipped it short of the fringe and ball rolled to the other side of the green, lagged it close for a tap in double bogey 5. 5th hole, long par 3, I bunt a driver because I have no idea how the range ball is going to react. I fly it 135 yards, it runs another 35 uphill! I chip the second, it rolls of the back after I barely land it on the front third of the green, scramble from there to save bogey.

Then, the long Par 5, I hit driver and catch it bottom heel side. No joke, I drop the driver out of my hands as it makes a sound unlike anything I've heard in some time. It's like hearing a bird fly into a window mixed with the feeling of jack-hammering through solid granite. It is, without question, the worst feeling shot I've ever hit and I've broken irons with shanks when I was younger. But, it goes like 210. Then a 4 wood that goes like 180. I have roughly 110 to get home, I hit PW, shot lands 20 yards short and I'm getting mad. Then I try to bump it, ball runs over the green because it has no breaks even though I'm bumping it through the fairway. Chip back runs 12 feet past the hole and somehow I make the putt to save a 6.

The range ball then gets deposited as a gift to Poseidon on my drive to the 8th. From there, I pull out my HX Hot and play pretty regular golf, which I find kinda boring. A good break through the trees leaves me 3 feet for birdie on 8 which I convert and a simple up and down on 9 leaves me +2 for the day.

7QeOTn9l.jpg

In all, what are my takeways? First, this is really fun! @JohnSmalls should be given a kingdom for allowing us to do this. Secondly, If I had to play golf with a mini-golf ball I don't think I'd love it all the time, but for a round or a special tournament I'd think I'd manage. It putts really well (duh) and the distance loss isn't that weird. I'd reckon it's very similar to playing one of those lite-up balls for a night golf tournament. Thirdly, If I participate next year, I think I'm going the mini-golf ball route again over the traditional rocks. It was just more fun with that instead something that's used for rounds of golf by others, it just felt meh to me. Lastly, NEVER, AND I MEAN NEVER, USE A RANGE BALL. THEY ARE THE DEVIL

This is just awesome!  Major props to playing both a PuttPutt/minigolf ball and a range ball.  This is a heck of a recap.  Between, @PING Apologist #9 's wardrobe of safety, and @fixyurdivot's meteorite you guys left your mark on the 2019 edition.  Keep up the good work guys!

This is such a good write-up, you had me laughing through the whole thing. I give you major props for playing a mini golf ball, that's just awesome, man. I hope the feeling returns to your hands after that low face shot with the range ball, you have gone above and beyond in this Hard Rock Challenge. Great score!

Alas, I forgot to take my bucket of crappy balls with me to the course Tuesday, so I did not get to make another attempt. If I assume I would have shot the same score with the rock, it would not have been an improvement, anyway.

@russtopherb, in my opinion, you should focus primarily on the Spongebob ball. I would love to see that on the course.

Interesting. I didn’t know about it’s construction. Believe me, I have plenty of other older Top Flites to choose from.

Yeah man, I loved that ball. Furyk used it to win the 2003 US Open. I played some wild balls instead of the NXT Tours I was given in High School. Tour Ace, Dunlop Loco Pro and Loco Pro HT, Maxfli Tour Fire, Precept U-Tri Tour, First generation Srixon stuff in America... I miss those days and those balls!
