Copper Patina

Recommended Posts

My Cleveland Rotex 50° is unfinished.

I learned about Novacan brand Patina during a stained glass course I took last weekend.  Brushed over the solder lines, it changes them to black or copper.

I decided to try it on bare steel. It worked.  I removed as much rust from my wedge as possible with scotchbrite.  The results are as the name suggests, a nice copper patina  🙂

I'm sure there are ways to make it nicer in either prep or finish.  I did this on a whim, and I love it 🙂

One range session later, and it hasnt worn off yet 🙂 I'm sure it will in time

The finish flaked off some.  Might have to find a way to stop the reaction, not sure how

The only thing that I'd think might stop it is if your applied a thin layer of clear sealant. But I'm not sure how that would affect the performance.

I tried polish after.  Maybe if I dilute the polish some.  Not sure.  Finish of this club head was already unfinished/rusty

  • 2 weeks later...

From the SDS sheet (page 3) the patina chemical is Copper Sulfate and Sulfuric Acid. If you apply a clear coat the reaction might continue underneath the finish. You could try to neutralize the sulfuric acid with baking soda.
