Indeed.  It's clear he's growing really frustrated with his game.  Listening to him during interviews suggests he's happy with progress and the climb out of this now long winded slump, but I think on the course the internalizing is starting to come out.

I think Speith had better be careful if he wants to fire Greller TBH. I bet he would get picked up by somebody else in a second.

No doubt Greller would get hired quickly.  As we have seen with other tour dynamic duo break-ups, it not always based on data. Sometimes a change on the bag, just like a change in swing coach, can make a difference.

Sadly the link on strokes gained didn’t work for me. I will try it on my laptop later.

That was some spectacular golf. I prefer having the course play tougher but it was amazing to watch yesterday’s play.

Wow

My son is going to carry for me in a tournament next month.....I think we will put the Speith comments to shame. He is 13 and disagrees with me just to disagree with me.  I told my wife I can deal with him and it should be at least better than the last time she carried for me in a tournament.

Nothing the USGA could do. No wind and extremely wet first half of the year makes the course fairly indefensible. Usually they can get the moisture out of the greens, but much the same as here in the Midwest, without sun and heat, it ain't happening. Doesn't look like the winds or weather will change much through the weekend either. Winner will be in the -15 range. Which will help the players stop whining and threatening to boycott future opens.

Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

IMO Speith has come across as whiny since he started playing poorly a few seasons back. I used to be a fan, but with his attitude when things aren't going right, I don't care to watch him play.

That moment between him and his caddie was him disappointed in the fact that he hit a solid shot and didnt get the result he wanted. But While a caddie is supposed to get that distance right and make sure those distances keep his player of of trouble, it is still up to the player to know his distance and the circumstances.

There is an agreement at some point on the shot, distance and target. Unless the caddie made him to against what he originally choose for those two shots, it's on both of them. I'd have rather heard him say "we misjudged twice there" or something similar. But as I said, he's shied away from the blame and fault and just whined for a while now unfortunately.

He's still young. Hopefully he learns from it. Might help his game as well.....

Greens could be a lot firmer if they wanted them to be. Pin placements could really be ticked if they wanted them to be. Rough could really be up more than it is. Just a repeat of what they did last year on Long Island. I am also glad they did none of this. Shinnecock is a great golf course that the USGA hosed for the second time. Pebble is also great and I think they got this one right. Actually an Open that I want to watch.

From what they said the other day on the broadcast and an article I read, they can't get the greens any faster due to moisture and the lack of wind. Rough could be longer I suppose, but I think at some point there is a line where looking for balls in the rough is nonsensical. I saw videos of guys in their practice rounds losing balls in greenside rough when they literally just tossed it down. Being hard to hit out of and not being able to find a ball 3 yards off of the green is goofy.

I think the lack of sun, wind and normal coastal weather is what is really making it play as easy as it is. I think if that wind was at 15-20mph with some sunshine, or at least a lack of mositure, those greens would be dry and like parking lots...with balls bouncing into the long rough and rolling 15+ feet past for down hill putts.

But maybe the boycott talk helped sway the usga a bit.... But I don't think they are trying to make it any easier than past years.

Either way, I usually like to see the guys shoot par or a few over...so this hasn't been all that exciting so far for me.... But it's golf and great players... So I'll continue to watch.

I would agree with this except firming up the greens. There has been too much rain for them to dry them out.

One thing that they haven't done is sped them up to unreasonable speeds. They actually didn't roll 8 and 11.

Bingo.

Thankfully, Mike Davis “stepped aside” in his role with USGA US Open setup and it was the correct move.

The course is tough enough as it is and it’s been fun to watch thus far.

I’m not disagreeing with most of the Spieth takes. He is often his own worst enemy. I love him as a player. He’s a generational talent but annoyingly pessimistic.

My only question is, why are we hearing so much commentary from him and so very little from anyone else? Is Fox letting us hear more from Spieth than anyone else?

Spieth is always that "whiny." He always has been one to say whatever is on his mind during a round. Only difference is we get to hear it all this week with Fox having mics all over the course.

As for the Greller stuff yesterday, I think it was just pent-up frustration with his game. He's a fantastic player who's really struggling with his game hitting what he thinks were perfect shots and the yardages were off by a significant amount. Let's not forget Spieth is one of the few players who consistently says we, as in him and Greller, when he does well or wins.

I love it when the announcers say something like "He hit that into a tough spot.  That's going to be a really difficult shot."  Then the player either sticks it close or holes it.  #theseguysaregood

That’s a great question, why don’t we hear commentary when Rahm hits one of his bad shots? I bet that would be interesting.

No, and Joe Buck hatred is played out. The Fox broadcast is the best broadcast in the sport especially considering they only get one shot a year

It’s gotta be tough having that many hours of broadcasting per day and keep it interesting.
I like the Fox Mix setup.
