I'll start.... and throughout the 43 pages (so far) this may have been asked/answered, but since you all have these new sets of clubs have you done a thorough gapping test with them to determine your easy/regular/hard swing distances?

If so can you go into a bit of detail into how you've done it?

If not can you explain why not? (i.e. I already know my 7i goes 150...)

I haven't done a thorough gapping.

Why not?

Well two reasons:

1. My range uses limited flight balls so there isnt a great way to determine real distances close by without take the whole set to a fitter and paying for monitor time or a trackman range which is a 60 minute drive from my house...

2. Thats the beauty of Arccos. I made sure all of my lofts matched my old set, so for the irons I know how far they should go. But arccos tells me the range that they actually go without me needing to go try and dial them in. So while more data makes the ranges more accurate, you can also view your longest shot and detailed club information. So I can see my longest shot with a certain club if I know the range is off and I immediately know my limit with that club. You can also see what hole you hit said shot on, so if you hit a 250 yard 4 iron, but the hole you hit it on is hole #4 for example and it plays 50 yards downhill....well then you know thats not a true distance..etc...

I don't think you need to gap is what I'm getting at using a system like this, its built in. just go play and check your stats later.

Hope that makes some sense...

I respectfully disagree....AFTER you get a comprehensive set of data probably not but before then you're just (educated) guessing.

....but I don't mean to divert the discussion into the theoretical realm.  Thanks for indulging me.  😉

Is there a club from your old set that you miss and what is the one new Cobra club you couldn't live without?

I don't really miss anything from the old bag.  I've struggled the most with the F9 irons but my old AP2's weren't exactly my favorite either.  Not sure what the best cobra club is yet.  I've been hitting the 3 wood and hybrids really well lately but top of the mountain is probably the wedges.  They are beautiful and they actually work!

I started out doing some range testing to get an idea of my general distances but Arccos has firmly supplanted that with on-course data.  Hitting rock hard balls off of mats let me know the F9's fly like crazy but that's about it.  Arccos all the way.

so, to follow-up, since you need a history of shots for Arccos to build that database - how are deciding which club to use when you're in-between distances?

Depends on a ton of variables; wind, lie, pin placement, how I'm playing that day, etc.  In most situations I'll take the longer club and choke down or only take a 3/4 swing

Hmm Clearly a thorough gapping is always beneficial when possible, but I only have so much time and I'd rather play rounds and contribute to this challenge then go out and collect data that arccos is just going to end up telling me anyway...I think that was my point. by saying you don't need to do it. I wasn't trying to say it was a replacement just that you can get by without it.

1 penalty and 1 short tee shot into the trees on a dogleft left that I had to punch out from. Does a penalty somehow negate 9 fairways and multiple 270+ drives in the fairway?

It did this same thing to me in the round before last as well I just hadn't mentioned it here yet. It was also 9/14 fairways and 1 penalty and shows my driving handicap as 30+...

I wouldn't think so. Something doesn't seem right...

I've liked both the GIR and the FIR challenge the best because it forces me to play differently. Specifically the GIR. It was all or nothing so i was just as aggressive as possible and I actually scored better because of it. I learned alot from both of them. which is probably why I liked them the best. I'm also hitting more greens now because of what I learned in that challenge.

Is there a specific challenge you're hoping to see in the coming weeks?

Well we already know what is coming so I can't actually answer that question...

There are many questions I have, but mine mainly pertains to Arccos and how you perceive the handicap system it uses. Do you believe it to be a accurate scope of your handicap now that you have a good baseline or is it screwed one way or another?

Upon further investigation, there is this quote in the driver section:

"if you hit your drive into trouble (e.g. where you cannot take a direct approach to the green) and must hit a recovery shot to get back into position, Arccos will penalize your driving handicap instead of your approach handicap."

I am wondering if, on some holes, a good drive followed by say, a chunked iron, is perceived as a punchout or "recovery shot" and hence its penalizing my driving handicap unfairly instead of my approach handicap. Its the only thing I can think of...

My Arccos handicap is currently 1.3 strokes higher than my GHIN index. so I think its tracking well with my improvement. Even when my individual handicaps (Driving, Approach, etc.) go up, but my scores go down, my overall HC still tracks with my GHIN. So whatever voodoo magic is happening, it seems to be working.

So I am a spy and found you on Arccos. Just a quick glance and I notice you hit some 4 and 5 irons off the tee. It looks like this is the right club but Arccos doesn't like this. My course has a par 5 that you can't really hit it over 220 and I am penalized every time I play that hole. Look at one of your rounds on the dashboard and the more green you see off the tee the better. Take a look and see which holes are penalizing you.

When you crank up, or down the loft on the F9 does it close or open the face noticeably at address?

When you loft up or down, do you switch the weights?

Does weight switching by itself change the launch as I'm finding in standard positions the launch of a 10.5 is very low.

What's the fairway f9 launch? high low or mid- does it sound the same as the Driver?

Eureka! This fixed the problem. I never looked that closely at the rounds on a desktop. I had penalties assigned to my driver that actually should have been assigned to my irons. so I fixed that and suddenly I'm at a 14.4 Driving handicap last round which makes way more sense. Duh.

Thank you for creeping on me and helping me out. Ha

What is your biggest annoyance with this competition?

Asking the real, hard-hitting questions

Edit:  Actually, let me add to these a question of my own:

Competitors, What advice would you give to forum members that would like to participate in a future Cobra Challenge?

Good gracious, I've been gone for barely a week and I am not sure what's more of a challenge to catch up on: work or this thread.  Good work guys!  Congrats @Nunfa0 for whipping some tail in the dark (should be extra points here).

What challenge has been your favorite thus far and why?

Is there a specific challenge you're hoping to see in the coming weeks?

They've all been good so far.  I like the strategy involved in trying to change my game to meet the challenge but still score well.

We can't get into specfics about what's to come but I think all of us are excited (and nervous) about next week's challenge.

How often is Arccos reommending a club where you would choose another?

It was terrible starting out but as we have more data points in the system it seems to be getting better and better.  I don't look at it every shot but the few I do my preferred club is either the 1st of 2nd Caddie suggestion.

There are many questions I have, but mine mainly pertains to Arccos and how you perceive the handicap system it uses. Do you believe it to be a accurate scope of your handicap now that you have a good baseline or is it screwed one way or another?

Right now Arccos is 0.5 below my current USGA trend.  I'd say that is fairly accurate.

Since there are points for every hy/fw shot hit, will anyone be gaming only those clubs?

I'd gamble and even putt with one 😉

That's the beauty of all of these challenges.  Who's willing to go all in on the fairways and hybrids this week?  I have no problem taking 3 wood or hybrid off the tee but I don't want to completely ruin my scores by doing something crazy like putting with one.  I would take too much heat from the guys at my course saying I was trying to inflate my handicap on purpose.

As weird as it may be, I actually putt with my hybrid when I'm just off the green.  It was something I learned at the Tour Striker Academy.  I use it when there's a bit too much grass to go through, but not enough to warrant a chip.

For some reason, I first read this as a question for the haters....

@bardle because of the size of this thread, you may have posted and I missed it, how is your gapping looking with the one lengths? Perhaps post a screen shot of your Arccos playing distanced?
